do you wanna know how it feels

Lilacbird knew now of her use. She was confident in her ability to watch the clans kits, help them raise into strong, respectable members of the clan. But now as the cold frost took over camp early, she felt bad she had forfeited her duties as a warrior. But, she felt happier. And isn't that all that mattered? Wasn't finding ones place in a cold hard world, and a reason to trudge forward something to take in?

The lilac Perma queen would be resting to the side as she kept a keen eye on the kits who tumbled and wrestled through the midst of camp, her plume of a tail curled tightly to her side in attempt to soak in the warmth. A break needed from painstaking weaving she put into the walls of dens all morning and afternoon. And though her belly rumbled, and her mouth salivated for food, she would not take any. Claythorn needed it, the elders- she could hold off. And though she remembered painfully of iciclefang holding off too long, she would not let it get to that point. Lilacbird would simply eat tomorrow.

Many were going to be hungry, and she refused to let herself eat when those who needed energy to hunt and fight- (especially with the upcoming sunningrocks battle), needed at least a nice morsel.

Her gaze wandered to the river, and if it wasn't for the slight pause to admire the frosted over scenery, she could've easily missed it. But she found stride to her paws quickly as she up and turned towards two large boulders on the edge of the river. At first, it merely looked like some algae build up, but as she neared closer, she couldn't help but grin as instead moss coated the back and inner sides of the boulder.

Paws pulled at the smaller boulder, Lilacbirds gaze bright before claws picked and pulled at the soft, albeit slightly frozen moss, and bundled it up to a small little pile, eyes gleaming. Her head ducked as she scooped it up in her maw, and carried it back with pride. So easily missed... She was glad she could find some contribution. And though, as she looked back, she wondered, if there was possibility of more materials that nestled under the frost.

Watching Lilacbird return from the riverbank's edge with a triumphant glint in her eye and a bundle of moss clutched between her teeth, Hawkcloud feels a bit of encouragement — even where she sits shielded by the worst of the biting wind behind the camp's brittle sedge, fur fluffed against the cold. "Nice find, Lilacbird," she mews when the older she-cat approaches close enough, and then fights against her own protesting limbs to rise to her own paws. If the tortoiseshell can search for materials even while tending to the kits within the nursery, Hawkcloud feels she should, too. She's capable of it, despite the lingering grief that still tugs at her heartstrings like clutching weeds at the bottom of the river, trying to tug her beneath again. Hawkcloud shakes the thoughts away, kneading the ground in an attempt to gather warmth in her paws before heading off to scout the area the queen had come from for more hidden moss.

The warrior pads along the riverbank, bracing her forepaws against the stripped boulders as she searches the surroundings, her eyes sharp and hopeful for the familiar green of moss or stubborn, still-alive ferns to weave into their dens and bedding. But the sudden chill of early leaf-bare's arrival had stripped away most of the forest's gentler colors, leaving only bare stems and fallen leaves underpaw, dark and lifeless beneath the layer of frost. Hawkcloud lets out a low exhale, suddenly wishing she still had a tail with which to wrap around herself, tuck her nose into. The brown of the bite-cropped remnant of hers matches the hue of the barren ground around her, and feels just as useless as the she-cat finds she can't spot anything. Hawkcloud returns her paws to the earth, continuing her search while making sure to steer clear of the cold river water nearby.

/ Roll: 2 - Can't find suitable materials.

Just like Hawkcloud, Eveningpaw grows inspired by Lilacbird's perceptiveness. The now-permanent queen is amongst the curious cases of adults who appear to be stagnant — not in a negative way, but rather, Eveningpaw struggles to imagine them as little kittens and eager apprentices. Sweet and kind Lilacbird was surely made for the rank of queen... she is flawless at it, and although Eveningpaw doesn't know how anyone can give up the path of a warrior, she sees sense in that decision.

Eveningpaw watches with a curious glint in her eyes. Lilacbird harvests from such an obvious spot, it's a wonder how nobody has thought to check those river-smoothed boulders and pebbles before the stream freezes over. Thanks to Lilacbird's focus, none of that yield will go to waste.

"Can I help? Let me try!" she says, hopping beside Lilacbird. Those soft brown paws are coated in moss, so Eveningpaw doubts she would find any more, but that doesn't mean she can't scout the area for something else.

Sure enough, Eveningpaw is rewarded for her efforts. It takes her a moment to recognize that pine needles can be just as useful as any other material used for keeping nests warm or walls secured — they are more filler than anything else, but that is important to keep everything stable and usable. She fastens herself to the riverbank with strong hindlegs, scooping up the wayward foliage with her paws. "Oooh... maybe these came all the way from ShadowClan territory!"

Meager sun, as plenilune and prominent as it was, offered Riverclan little comfort in their dire times. Algaepaw could feel the chill of leaf-bare play along his coiled spine, and it was much different than the water that threatened to drown. The winds could not kill her outright, could not suffocate her with too much of itself. But it would bleed the earth dry, as the last colors sank into where he could not reach. It was a much slower death, much more painful and exquisite than anything the roiling rivers could cough up. (Still, the river was the ultimate reverence, for there was little force that harbored more power and ire than it.)

"Hmm, are you gathering moss?" Algaepaw's chirrup of a voice cut through the frostbitten air, and the apprentice's general presence was like a sunburn that weltered red upon the naked flesh, slimmed into shark-tooth and gossamer-fur. Saccharine disposition often grated upon his peers, almost as if metal scratching along a chalkboard, but she had little to not smile about. Even as bellies became slender and flanks became gaunt, there would always be the indomitable spirit to flow through one's aching veins. Much like a river, one could liken it to. Golden eyes searched along the boulders of the riverbank, though whatever materials that the others had gathered now lie impolitely scant upon the stones, burnt away by the furor of early winter. The lichen-freckled tom padded along the ends of the bank, hawkish eyes peering at each and every face. He came upon no spark of green as a saving grace, no nothing to prove his own aptitude. Frustration bubbled within him, though he simmered it down with a loudly-exhaled breath. "There's nothing left. You guys must've taken it all." Algaepaw exclaimed with a huffy tone, for fate had granted him little pittance in such a trying hour, instead baring a cold shoulder towards her most studious discipline. At least Hawkcloud had not found anything, so she could at laest compare herself to an actual warrior. At least she was not the worst one in the room.

  • —— ALGAEPAW / He/She / 6 Moons

—— A wiry, wild-furred blue tortoiseshell with high white and freckle-like spotting. Brilliant yellow eyes, like twin molten suns.
—— Chaotic, obsessive and strange, Algaepaw is a weirdly refreshing character to encounter amongst the sea of her dutiful kin. Beset by nature and her patterns, he is quick to connect the dots even when no such connection truly exists. Somewhat easy to befriend, provided that one can handle his mannerisms and tendency to weave tall tales.

Though he's grown to think of Lilacbird as somewhat of a friend, the black and white tom has found that moments spent with the she-cat has grown few and far between since she's chosen to live in the nursery permanently. Gillsight can't help but wonder if she misses it — being a warrior — as the queen sets off along the river's edge. If she misses the lack of stagnancy, the constant go, go, go that being a warrior is at times.

" F-find anything..? " he finds himself nearing the queen with a tilt of his head, only to give the older feline a slight smile at the moss she's collected. It will be plenty warm for the kits and queens, he thinks — but the clan could always do with some more materials. Golden gaze searches the area for some more moss, and when Algaepaw's voice reaches his ears, the warrior turns to look at the young apprentice.

" T-There's always other things you c-can find, " the warrior suggests, " L-like f-feathers or... " Gillsight's words trail off at the sight of curling fronds up ahead, a smile growing on his face as he treads ahead to grab them. When he returns, he places them among the growing pile of materials, a nod in Pikesplash's direction at the shared find. " F-ferns. "

She didn't expect to be such an influence in her decision to find materials on the outskirts of camp. It brought a soft smile to her face, giving a small, "thank you," in response to Hawkcloud. But even now, as she squinted, glancing along the riverbank, she couldn't see anything.

But eveningpaw did, giving her an encouraging wave with a lilac paw. "Absolutely, all eyes on d-d-deck," the queen purrs. And as the white and grey mottled apprentice bounds forward, she didn't take long to find something others missed. It really was a game of perception, wasn't it? "Ooo... Perhaps... They were unfortunate to lose these. But t-take it as a gift from starclan." It was weird to find Pine needles on this side of the river, but she didn't question it. They needed whatever they could find.

"Algaepaw ... Try again, d-do not give up, there's so much more to find," she rumbles softly. Supportive, empathetic, soft, Lilacbird couldn't do anything but imagine better luck for those that gave up hope. Hope was such a gracious thing that she wished she could share into many more members who lost theirs. "Think p-positively, and its gentle g-grace will follow you." She wished she could follow her own words, always anxious and worried about something. But right now, she was distracted.

Her gentle gaze much like the river waters themselves fell to pikesplash, and a content nod graces her head. "Yes... Th-these will be useful. Thank.. you p-pikesplash." She purrs, her tail drifting high behind her as she moved to sit on her haunches.

Where others may find stagnancy in being a simple queen, she did not. Call her weird, but she enjoyed the life of it. She found something she was good at, and she clung to it like a burr that would not free of the pelt it caught on to. With how many kits Riverclan houses, there was always much to do, much to say, and random curiousities of children to explore. She was more than content. She was finally happy.

"Exactly, g-gillsight!" She purrs, happy with the other seeming to agree with her. Though, she did miss spending time with the tom, it indeed had been scarce since she had her own kits, then decided to stay in this role. "Hey... Would.. you c-care t-to walk with me later..?" She asks to Gillsight, curiousity lighting her expression, tail curling over cold toes. It had been a while, and surely, she could escape for a moment or two from the camp... Right?
