Greenleaf was a perfect time to be a kitten. It contrasted winter's bitter cold with life that filled the nursery inhabitants' with an energy and glee that could not be contained. But, as grown cats naturally differed, so did the young. From an early age, there was one who stuck out like a sore thumb in his aloof behaviors, a boy who'd huddle in the outskirts like a cornered feral cat, hissing at any that come near with their playful antics.

So sat Shroudedkit, resting in a guarded loaf position at the mouth of the nursery while his siblings and denmates went out to play. His parents, whose avoidance he'd seemingly inherited, were nowhere to be found as usual - leaving their badly prophesized children to be watched by the general public during the day while they went about their personal lives. It left Shroudedkit alone, just the way he seemed to like it, with glaring eyes and prickling fur, ready to swipe out whenever the roughhousing and other shenanigans invaded his personal space..

⋆˖⁺‧₊☽◯☾₊‧⁺˖⋆ it was a quiet moment in the nursery, kittens busying their paws with games and mischief. not all were so keen on play, it seemed. there wasn't much to do besides notice things in here, shroudedkit was the object of her deep-cutting gaze today.

she watched as his littermates scampered outside, quickly engaging themselves with each others presence. shroudedkit just observed, narrow eyed and prickle furred. it holds a certain likeness to how she was as a kit, and the queen couldn't help but wonder if her children would be the same. nightbird wasn't entirely sure what she would do if they only wished to cling by her side. tucked away in the nursery all day with no reprieve was not how she wished to spend her days.

she would ready them for apprenticeship, foster a lick of independence when she sent them away from the protective walls. even if there was resistance, she would like to think that they would thank her for it when they finally moved out of their birthplace and into the apprentice's den. she would not disservice them by wasting their time in the nursery as shadedmoon and crimsonsun had to shroudedkit. her children would leave ready to catch prey and serve their clan within their first moon of leaving this place.

her tail twitched, ears flicking towards shroudedkit observantly. "you should play with them, it's a good training opportunity." nightbird grants her insight distantly, head shifted just slightly as her silver gaze rakes over the child. "you can only learn so much by watching."

Like her sibling, Glowingkit is not really one to play with the other kits - though not so much for lack of want then a lack of confidence to try. Instead, she sits upon the sidelines - darting glances towards Shroudedkit, who doesn't seem to want to be bothered (and Glowingkit would hate to make herself be a bother), and Nightbird, who doesn't seem to understand that. Jaws part for half-second, as if to warn her, but they shut in silence a moment later as words fail her. She's an adult anyway - surely, Glowingkits words would be unwelcome. And so she shuffles, side to side where she sits, as head bobs in an attempt to focus on whatever scene is about to greet her.

⁺₊⋆ ☀︎ ⋆⁺₊ She enjoyed a good challenge, and each day presented an opportunity to go find something to straighten her mind, her body, or just to occupy her mind, but she doesn't like to spend too much time up there.

Well, at least a lot less than her siblings do; she often watches them, even the ones who prefer the company of themselves. Like little Glowingkit, peacefully watching the world go by. Dwindlingkit threw the mossball in the air before catching it in her mouth.

A black she-cat catches her gaze. Aw, how nice of Nightbird to prompt her stoic brother to stop practicing guarding the nursery with his life. From the look on Shroudedkit's face, he'd be quick to defend his spot as well. Why not have a bit of fun and give a Nightbird a helping paw?

The red and cream kit cocked her head to the side, give a little jump, and then let loose her mossball into the air. Luckily, she didn't have good aim; instead of hitting her brother in the head, it landed on his tail instead. 'Close enough,' she thought, giggling.

Merlinkit paid no heed to the portending names that besieged Shroudedkit and his brood, mostly because she had been much too young to remember anything of the sun's disappearance. While Thunderclan had panicked to their wits end about the sun closing its eyes for the first time, she had been suckling at her parent's belly... She had certainly heard tales of it, though, of which the kitten regarded it as 'cool' and not 'utterly and soul-crushingly terrifying'. "If only I had been around to see that. Um, I wouldn't have been scared... I think."

"Um..." Quiet voice pricked into Shroudedkit's and Nightbird's conversation, intonation like a mouse hushed beneath the foliage, an unsure and fearful sort of thing. The molly toddled up to other kitten, peering downwards as she unintentionally cast a shadow over him. She had grown much more than she anticipated, as gangling limbs and too-large mittens now trapped her within an awkward existence. "If you, uh, want... We can play together..." Merlinkit knew that making friends was perhaps one of the hardest tasks to accomplish, as though a simple reposure from her anxieties whispered away from her grasp, so much so that she could hardly even taste it upon a pinprick tongue. After all, what if Shroudedkit said no? Or yelled at her? Or told her to get lost? Or said he never ever ever wanted to be friends, even if she really wanted to? The possibilities swirled in her yet as a wrathful storm, the force of nature sloshing and screeching just within her bird bones. Still, her parents and her siblings seemed to do it just fine, so the blue tortoiseshell figured that she might as well try it too, though her heart pounded within her brittle chest like needles spurring through her rib cage. There was no harm in trying, right?
