pafp LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS — prompt

Mousenose has been extraordinarily lucky that Lightstrike is oblivious—but she doesn’t feel lucky. Despite the way she’d heaved herself at him after his return from the mountains, the golden tabby has regarded her the exact same as he always has… which is to say, as a Clanmate, and little more. Her frustration mounts by the day; why can’t he see how she feels about him?! She feels she has to do something drastic to get him to pry his eyes away from Moonwhisper’s tufted, prissy butt, and she spends most of her free time conniving about how to steal the cream-colored warrior away from her nemesis.

She’s nearly forgotten about the lies she’d told her denmates about Lightstrike calling her beautiful—and then, one day, she hears a teasing purr from Roeflame toward the warrior. “So a little bird told me you told Mousenose she was pretty? Are you two…” Mousenose’s fur begins to prickle—she whirls about, her flesh flushed beneath her tangled fur. “Erm…” She smiles in what she hopes is a disarming way in Lightstrike’s direction. “Yeah—yeah, remember—remember when you, uh… called me that?” She shuffles her paws, hoping the cuteness of the gesture will urge him to lie for her.

He hadn't quite expected chatter to take such an abrupt turn to gossip. It wasn't as if it was unusual for the lot of them, but Lightstrike still felt blindsided. The content of the question, directed at him, especially.

The golden tom's immediate reaction was to freeze, mouth partially open as if he'd been about to say something of his own. His second was the panic that lanced through his heart. His thoughts were quick, frantic. Did I say that? When did I say that? Shit, I don't remember!

Yet despite the questions, his brain seemed to lag behind, and his head instead swung around to stare blankly at Mousenose. Remember? she said, and it was about then his brain function stopped entirely. His lips twitched, questions forming and falling apart. In the end, all he manages is a dumbfounded, "Huh?"

There isn’t much thought about romance in Marigoldpaw’s mind. His gender was enough of a struggle to understand, though he’s glad he found his answer at such a young age. It’s evolved into something more over time, but otherwise, he doesn’t spend his energy thinking about attraction, his own or others. Maybe when he’s finally happy enough with his progress as an apprentice, he’ll think about silly things like that.

Nevertheless, rumors are always fun; the drama that blossoms being something entertaining in an otherwise uneventful social life. The one currently floating around was that Lightstrike called Mousenose pretty once. It would have been a lame topic of discussion otherwise, but Marigoldpaw wonders if it’ll lead into them both getting embarrassed, so he seeks them out. At least it wouldn’t be boring, probably.

He spots the pair of them next to each other, a sly smile forming on his face before he even says a word. To make things better, Roeflame says it outright, Mousenose looking to the fellow orange tom for confirmation, and Lightstrike unable to process it and just going huh in response. “Well? Did you?” Marigoldpaw teases, egging him on. “And are you two actually dating? I’m dying to know!”

she wasn’t trying to overhear, honest — but that was how she ended up in these situations, most often than not. lounged upon a shoulder against roeflame, the woman is trying to reach a jutting leaf where it sticks to the knotted fluff of her lower back, when the tabby speaks. freckleflame’s head lifts, tongue still jutting lightly from between small, sharp teeth. are you two.. mousenose prompts the light tabby and — nothing. a slack jaw and dumbfounded sound, as if he were an apprentice caught sneaking extra prey.

she blinks, owlish. was he really going to sit there and pretend like he hadnt said that? what, was calling her sister pretty bad? was he embarrassed?her lip curls, aggressively beginning to lick at her chest, ” jeez, lightstrike. th’ secrets out. she says is with a rumble of disdain, the faintest tilt backward of tufted ears. what was he trying so hard to hide her for, anyway? he hadn’t said a word about her, either way or another — to treat her sister like she was something to ignore. aside from the continuous astonishment that mousenose allowed it, she couldn’t help the faintest bristle of irritation it wrought, ” y’could at least act like y’ wanna be with her. “

The youth today were always filled with characteristics and actions she didn't understand. Ignoring the fact that these cats were not much younger than she was, she still felt perplexed by their constant avoidance of such topics. Why not just say what you meant? Shaking her head as she approached the group, her brow would raise as she watched them dance around the confessions. "Oh just tell each other how you feel already, it's obvious you both like each other." While mostly a teasing remark, Coyotebite's words still held their usual cold tone. Was it truly that difficult to confess your feelings for another cat?

ROEFLAME — I fell in love with the fire long ago.

When Mousenose had first revealed how Lightstrike had complimented her, Roeflame had been skeptical, seeing as how him and Moonwhisper had begun spending so much time together.
Yet, the dappled warrior had been firm in her claims, and truthfully Roeflame wasn’t going to pursue the matter, she was a busy lady! A mate, a new promotion, her friends and family…
Until, at least, she had found that the opportunity presented itself in light conversation. Lightstrike was a friend… or at least they had grown up together, which counted for something… so she supposed she could make the time to prod.
What the tabby hadn’t been expecting was how quick Mousenose was to intercept, Roeflame slightly leaning back as though the swiftness of the she-cats arrival actually had a physical impact.
Doe-shaped optics flicker between the stuttering warrior and the dumbfounded Lightstrike.
Huh? The golden warrior mumbles, almost deadpanned if not for the unintentional lackluster.
Roeflame looks to Freckleflame, brow quirked fleetingly, while Coyotebite pushed the narrative even further in her own, dry-humored way.
"you good, Lightstrike?" Roeflame would prompt, though unhelpful when there was a teasing flicker laced in her tone.
"You look a little…queasy."

"speech"

Oh, this mousebrained fool! Lightstrike stands and looks at her as if she’s turned into a badger! Huh? His eyes are wide, his expression blank with surprise. He can’t even try to help her save face! Mousenose’s eyes narrow, but before she can say anything to help her out of this precarious situation, other cats draw closer. Young Marigoldpaw asks if they’re dating, and her skin begins to burn further under her messy coat. “Well—well, I never, uh, I never said that,” she stammers, shuffling her paws again. And then there’s Freckleflame, trying to help her, but unknowingly making things worse. She gives her sister a half-desperate look through round green eyes and gently shakes her head. Coyotebite tells Lightstrike to just confess his feelings already, and then Roeflame is—Roeflame is looking at him with concern, and oh, that’s not good, that’s…

He just—he just doesn’t remember, that’s all,” she chirps brightly, ignoring the prickle of tears that threaten at the corner of each eye. “He just, he, uh, he told me I was pretty r-right before the journey. Didn’t you, Lightstrike? Didn’t you?” She looks at him as beseechingly as she dares, because now—oh, now she wants it to be true, she wants to pretend it happened, and maybe if he says yes, now, maybe… maybe it will make it true.

Pretty. Secret's out. Like each other. Dating.

Lightstrike practically blanched with each bit of input from his Clanmates.

Oh.

Oh, she— They— Oh.

"Um," he eventually sputtered once he could get a word in edgewise. His eyes were round now, almost comically so as he looked from cat to cat. Freckleflame was annoyed at him. Coyotebite said it was obvious they liked each other.

Mousenose likes me.

Did he like her? Sure, she was- well- she... No, he wasn't sure that he did. For once at a loss for words, Lightstrike shifted his paws uncomfortably under the scrutiny. He didn't think he'd ever thought of her as anything more than a friend. He hadn't realized that was what everyone had been joking about. Idiot.

It was the mention of them dating that had Mousenose speaking up again, and he almost felt bad for the flash of gratitude he felt when she didn't affirm it. Her green eyes were turning to him now, talking about before the journey, that he had called her pretty. Once again his mouth parted, but nothing quite came out.

Before the journey. He wasn't sure that he had even spoken to her before he'd set out on the journey. He'd talked to the other journeymates, he'd talked to his closest friends... but he wasn't sure he'd stopped to speak to her. It felt so long ago.

"Are you- are you sure it was me?" he asked almost tentatively. "I don't... remember." Oh. She looked like she was going to cry. Once again, the claws of panic squeezed at his heart, and the tom jolted.

Lightstrike gave a near frantic shake of his head. "Ah- um- that's not—I-I- I mean! You are. Though. Pretty." Again his eyes flickered across the watching cats, and he swallowed. What was he supposed to do?
