This was the last thing Zemo wished to do, but he no longer has any choice. Zemo remembers when the group of cats living nearby formed into colonies, and later developed into clans. The tabby chimera was always there, silently observing but never engaging. He didn't see the appeal in abandoning his life style, he has always been a loner. He has never been bound by rules, free to live where he choose (albeit, excluding clan territory). His mate, Mirjana, also felt hesitancy about joining a clan. Like him, she was stubborn, and didn't want to abandon everything she had known. She was the most beautiful cat he laid eyes on, and every day he wishes she was still here by his side.

Life as a loner has never been easy, but it was far more difficult with kits. Typically, loners don't stay together for very long— based on his own experience. His father was never present in his life— he remembers the name his mother would call him by, but it was evident that his father never intended to stick around. His own mother only stuck around until she was confident Zemo would be fine on his own; he hasn't seen his mother since. He and Mirjana were different, though. He never left her side, and he glowed in pride when he looked at their kits— Ekaterina (or better known as Ekat), Vesna, and Vladimir. Ekat was an only child until Vesna and Vladimir came around, and at the time, it seemed like their little family was complete. But then, this world reminded them that it can be cruel, and merciless.

He remembers how quickly everything turned south, and not 12 moons ago. Ekat was six moons old, Vesna and Vladimir barely three moons. His family had been traveling; loners typically don't stay in one place for too long, there isn't a precise location Zemo can call home. The river was frozen over, and gave them the perfect opportunity to cross. Ekat was padding aside him, and Mirjana and the other two kits were right behind them. Disaster struck when the ice cracked, and the sound echoed in his ears. He remembers Mirjana telling him to grab Ekat and go. He never snatched her up so quickly, and he raced against the ice. He made it to the shore, at the edge of the twolegplace, but to his devastation, Mirjana, Vesna and Vladimir were nowhere to be seen.

It's been just him and Ekat now. Any other loner would've parted ways, but he couldn't lose her too. She's no longer a kit, but she'll always be a kit in his eyes. Leafbare has been especially harsh this year. There is little food, and his stomach gnaws in hunger, but Zemo refuses to resort to begging for kittypet food. He would typically rely on hunting and scavenging, but the rogue activity has been getting worse. The rogues are far more aggressive than him— and are very protective of the areas they think belong to them, and the food they think is theirs. Apparently, the shelter he and Ekat were occupying now belongs to the rogues. They were quick to chase the two loners out in the dead of night, and with a rumbling tummy and the cold breeze brushing against his fur, Zemo hated the first idea to come to mind.

SkyClan.

It's the clan that borders the twolegplace, and what he's heard from other loners, they are the most friendly to outsiders. He hates thinking it, but their best chance for survival might be joining SkyClan. He can't lose Ekat too, not after the loss of her mother and siblings. He hopes the rumors are correct, and that they won't be chased off. "Someone should find us soon," He says to Ekat with a flick of an ear. "Everything should be fine." They are barely in SkyClan's territory, hopefully it won't too long until a patrol runs across the two cats. So, the black and fawn chimera waits, ears alert for the sound of paws crunching beneath snow.

His daughter waits beside him — pressing into his flank when another leaf-bare breeze cuts past them, ruffling their fur and sinking into their skin. Her eyes, wide and pale like puddles of melted snow, are full of apprehension. Ekat is distrustful of the very trees that stretch overhead, lifeless branches clinging to the fallen snow. She sees enemies in the shadows of the undergrowth surrounding them, is wary of each sound that reaches her startled ears. The young she-cat hardly trusts herself. So how was she to put faith in the strange cats of SkyClan that wait within the forest ahead of them? The midnight feline wonders if they'll turn her and her father away, or worse — if they'll attack them. Ekat unsheathes her claws anxiously, sinking them into the snow beneath.

But still, she waits beside Zemo. She'd follow her father into the heart of a blizzard if that was where he led, so she trusts him now that joining the ranks of SkyClan might be their best chance at surviving the harsh leaf-bare season. Perhaps they'd even stay, long after the snow melts and life begins to fill the forest again. They'd been alone for so long, and Ekat is rather used to it — isn't sure if she'll ever feel at ease alongside other cats that don't share their blood. But perhaps everything would be fine, as her father had said. She's inclined to believe him, even when her erratic mind screams otherwise. "Okay," she says in response, waiting on alert just as he does.

Having agreed to tag along on the usual hunting patrol for the day, Dogbite was practically shaking out of his scraggly pelt. Leafbare had yet to let up, and he missed the comfort of the warmer moons. With rogues sniffing where they didn't belong, injuring the vulnerable, and food scarcity, he was on high alert. Trudging through the barren undergrowth, his nose twitched at the faint smell of a stranger. Rogues! His mind immediately triggered, and he passed a look to any nearby patrol members. Without a second to waste, the cinnamon and white feline dashed ahead, changing course towards two-leg place. Once his eye fell upon the two, it hardened, and he slowed to a stop, hpelt bristling with unease.

Neither seemed to be on the hunt or ready for a fight much less a rogue but he wasn't here to take chances. Stepping in front of the two with his tail held high, the tabby ground out a gruff remark. "Who are you, and why have you trespassed into Skyclan?" Their intense gaze bounced between the patch-work feline and the darker cat pressed against them. Huffing in the frigid air, he retorted with a finite promise. "Any funny business, and you'll regret it." A low growl bubbled in his chest, and inky claws sank into the wet earth as a warning. He had little time for foolishness and less patience than ever before. Too many had been hurt, and he wouldn't put any more cats at risk for a couple of strangers from two-leg place.

*+:。.。 Before Orchidpaw had nearly lost his life to the rogues, he'd never wanted anything past his clan's borders. Though he didn't look at Daylight warriors as beneath him, he'd always questioned their loyalty nonetheless. How could one be a proper warrior if they had a paw in two different worlds? But when death became closer friend than he'd have ever expected, 'Chid began to see the world without the lens of loyalty clouding his vision. What else was out there? What frightening things could 'Chid see and overcome? Who was he without Skyclan?
And could he survive as a loner?
Would he find more happiness as a kitty-pet?

These questions had, of course, been put to the back of his mind, but still, they lingered. Especially now, that he could understand why cats would want to join Skyclan - hoping, surely, to get away from the winter cold and starvation - but to give up a lifetime of freedom and exploration well...again, a question for another time.

Orchidpaw chased after Dogbite, the scent of strangers - of rogues - making his nose burn as he pictured the poor apprentices that had returned marred in pelt and heart. Never again. Never on Orchidpaw's watch. Fortunately, he did not barrel straight into the waiting jaws of a fight, instead homing to stand with a slight pant to his breath by his fellow clanmate, glaring daggers but unharmed at the two strangers.

One, a chimera tom, and the other a young ebony molly. They appear to be quite the pair - with nervous eyes set upon a grim expression. Neither looked particularly excited to be here, but neither did they seem eager for a fight. Orchidpaw would glance around without moving his head, subtly checking the shadows surrounding them for anything shifting among them.

"Also it's a pleasure to meet'cha" Orchidpaw would say with a cheerful smile he didn't feel, injecting the tense moment with a bit of levity. Partly for his thrumming heart, partly to see how the rogues respond to it.

It doesn't take too long for a patrol to run across him and Ekat. His daughter is pressed to his flank as the first SkyClanner appears— a battle scarred white cinnamon tabby. The SkyClanner is immediately on edge; tail high and fur bristling, but the tabby chimera remains unfazed. It's understandable that SkyClan will be tense when approaching an outsider, he and Ekat are in their territory after all. But perhaps not this tense, practically being treated like he and Ekat are rogues. Perhaps the rogue problem goes past the twolegplace? "You can relax, we aren't rogues," The loner speaks with a neutral tone, keeping his posture calm as the warrior ahead of them is tense... and nearly ready to pounce at them. "We apologize for trespassing," He comments as his green eyes briefly study the battle scarred warrior, "We can assure you it wasn't done with ill-intent."

The patch-work feline takes a step forward, hoping he won't have to turn and run in a moment. "SkyClan welcomes outsiders into it's clan, or am I mistaken?" Zemo questions, but he knows he can't push off Dogbite's demands for much longer. "My name is Zemo, and the she-cat beside me is my daughter Ekatrina." His eyes remain on the warrior as he speaks, wondering if the warrior will begin to relax. "We are loners, from the twolegplace. We wish to join SkyClan, if you'll have us." He takes a glance over at the other SkyClanner who showed up, a younger feline who must be younger than a year.

To his relief, this one is friendly. He gives the apprentice a silent, yet quick, nod of greeting; but his attention needs to remain on the older SkyClanner. He has a feeling in the back of his mind that Dogbite won't be the only hostile one to arrive. "I imagine SkyClan can use the extra paws to protect it's borders and to hunt." He muses with a flick of an ear, "We'll be good use to your clan."

"SkyClan welcomes cats from all walks of life if you intend to remain loyal to us. There are five Clans in this forest, and we will not tolerate those who stray elsewhere." The deputy meows firmly as she arrives, a flick of her tail against Orchidpaw's side greeting her kit as she comes to a halt beside the bristling Dogbite. She stands stiffly, neck fur fluffed up around her shoulders, but keeps her composure. It's strange to be back at the border without her apprentice, and Orangeblossom thinks sadly of Springpaw back in camp.

"My name is Orangeblossom. This is Dogbite, Orchidpaw." She gestures with a point of her nose to the two toms in turn, level gaze returning to Zemo and Ekatrina. The younger of the two seems warrior aged already, though scruffy to an extent and somewhat nervous, but the father seems ready to lend his paws. Would they both excel in time? Or would they be ousted into the remains of leafbare, failing their assessments?

"Clan life is hard. We face many dangers from the forest; and as SkyClanners you will be expected to care for others, not just yourselves. Do you understand?"

Orchidpaw's presence puts the warrior on even higher alert. Stepping back a touch, he aims to stand in the way of the youth, using his body as a living shield from the trespasser's view. Yet, it seemed his fears were unfounded as the tom posed no visible threat nor ill-will. Instead, the stranger composes themself and explains with direct levity. The younger of the two shyly presses into the older cat's side. Hm. Eyeing them both for what feels like a days time, the Skyclanner concedes and eases from his hostile posture to a more relaxed pose. Their tail brushes the chilly floor, and his fur falls flat against his scarred body. Patiently, he hears the duo out, picking up on the names with silent intrigue. His attention is instantly grabbed at the mention of twoleg place and former loners.

For a split second longer, the cinnamon and white feline tries to wrack his mind for any past interactions, but he comes up empty-pawed. This doesn't ease his suspicions, but the urge to defend has since passed. His tone is blunt and calm with a twinge of understanding. "I see and I've no doubt you are. I just don't have the power to offer you asylum, but our Deputy is right around the corner." On cue, Orangeblossom's arrival puts a pin in the precarious situation, and respectfully Dogbite concedes. Moving away from their earlier guarded stance, the tabby takes a seat, listening with a twinge of nostalgia as she mirrors the words similarly spoken to him. If it weren't for the obvious tensions, he would've given in to the desire of a fond smile. For now, he would work in tandem with his friend and wait for their response.

The patchwork feline's ears twitched in the direction of a new, firm voice. His green gaze pulls off the cinnamon and white warrior, and lands on a battle-scarred she-cat. Even before she speaks, the tom can tell that she is a cat of great importance— she holds herself high and when she speaks, her voice is firm. He nods as she speaks, feeling some relief that the rumors he heard about SkyClan were true. He knew that SkyClan wasn't the only clan in the forest; but he wasn't familiar with them. He knew there was a clan alongside the river, but his knowledge after that was fairly limited. "There are five Clans in this forest, and we will not tolerate those who stray elsewhere." "We understand," He meowed in response, he knew that joining SkyClan would be a lifetime commitment. It will probably be a hard adjustment, being a cat who is used to moving every few moons, but they can no longer survive on their own. They already lost so much, he can't possibly go on as a loner and lose his own remaining kit too.

Well, he finally learns the names of the SkyClanners who surround him and Ekatrina. Clanners certainly have... interesting names if you ask him. He heard other loners recalling how "funny", or even "strange" clan names can be. The deputy recites the names with ease, and it naturally flows off her tongue. But it certainly sounds a tad strange to his ears, and a thought comes to his mind that he didn't think of before. "Do we have to take on names like yours?" He asks Orangeblossom, as she's clearly the feline in charge at this particular moment. "Or can we keep our names as they are?" In the back of his mind, he hopes their names can be untouched. He knows he's desperate for their survival, but he's been Zemo his entire life. He can't picture another name for himself, or one for Ekat.

He briefly glances over at the battle-scarred warrior— better known as Dogbite. He gives the warrior a silent nod in response, quickly noting that the warrior has seemed to calm down slightly— no longer on the verge of attacking. His voice was still tense, but the patchwork feline noticed a tinge of understanding in his voice. He looks back over at Orangeblossom, as the deputy continues to address them. "...as SkyClanners you will be expected to care for others, not just yourselves. Do you understand?" There was no doubt in his mind that living in the forest didn't come along with dangers. Life as a loner was dangerous, his family was already going against the status quo by sticking together. But, he is certain the clans face dangers that he and Ekat have never seen before. "We understand," He mews, "We will remain loyal to the entirety of SkyClan." They never really cared for loners that weren't apart of their family, though it was already odd that his family stuck so close together. It'll be an adjustment— caring for more than just his daughter— but he's willing to tackle the challenge. As long as it means they survive, and have shelter over their heads and full bellies.

He looks over to his daughter, whom presses against his flank. He knows she must be nervous, she has lost so much in her short time on this plane, but he wanted to hear her agree to the deputy's words too. "Right, Ekat?"

Ekat nods, shuffling her paws nervously as she meets Dogbite's gaze with her own anxious one for a moment. The scarred warrior eventually seems to relax with the arrival of Orangeblossom, his hostility slowly fading — but Ekat remains on edge after the initial encounter, the fur along her spine prickling. Orchidpaw seems much more friendly, thankfully, and the she-cat meets his gaze for a heartbeat with a hint of gratitude in her wide, pale eyes. Afterwards, Ekat returns her attention to the SkyClan deputy, mulling thoughtfully over the older she-cat's words.

You will be expected to care for others, not just yourselves. The idea of it is strange to the loner, and she imagines it would've been much easier to do such a thing had she and Zemo been born within the Clan. Caring for cats she's never even met, who don't share her blood like her father and their fallen family members, seems difficult to the young she-cat — and her unease is written all over her expression. But like Zemo, she thinks she'll do what must be done. "Yes," she pipes up when prompted. "We... We understand."

"You can keep your names if you wish." Orangeblossom assures the two, inviting them to cross the border with a flick of her ear. It's not as if there isn't a precedent for it; while most daylight warriors chose to add a Clan suffix onto their name, former loners didn't have to take a Clan name. Turning back towards the camp, she sets off with the her friend and her son at a pace that allows for her limp to make itself hidden, and gives her time to explain the implications of what Zemo and Ekatrina have agreed to.

"After you meet your new Clanmates when we get to camp, the next two moons of your life will be spent training." She makes a note to introduce them to Blazestar, if he's around, and inform the two of where dens are laid out. "You will each be assigned a warrior to shadow, to learn SkyClan's way: how to climb the pines, our Code, Clan politics and StarClan. You don't have to believe in them, though they are very much real, you just have to respect them." Had she not seen evidence with her own two eyes, she might not trust in them as much as she does.

"After two moons have passed, you will face an assessment. Failure to complete it, or continued disobedience prior, will result in you being asked to leave." Letting that linger on the air, she falls quiet in case either of her new night-furred Clanmates had questions that sprung up over the course of her lecture.
