⋆✦⋆ The patrol had left camp after sunrise. His mentor, Asterflame, had happily tagged them both along for a hunting venture and so Dreampaw had been stalking through the undergrowth of the areas in and around the Owl Tree.

Dreampaw took a deep breath, the caressing of the drifting winds offering promises of a new leaf-fall. His clanmates were nowhere in sight but he didn't mind. They were all doing hunting of their own and, besides, Asterflame or someone else was always within earshot.

Typically when hunting, he liked to let the prey come to him. Motionless, his burning eyes would scan the forest floor for stray hairs of a mouse or vole caught in the brambles, signs of overturned leaves made by tinier paws, and best yet, fresh scent of a prey animal. If he could find any of these tell-tale pointers, he was uber confident he could make a move and stalk down an unsuspecting critter.

But he'd already slain a small vole that lay cooling beneath a few leaves nearby. So instead, they'd never see this coming.

———

"Hey what's that?" Dreampaw's voice would ring through the trees laced with a healthy mix of confusion and curiosity. For any clanmates who approached the call, it would just be Dreampaw standing with all four paws just barely within the shallows at the bank of a small creek. The tortie apprentice's gaze would be extended toward the other side of the water. His countenance was tight with intense scrutiny.

@batwing

/anyone can be assumed to be apart of the hunting patrol otherwise!

Batwing was on the patrol, of course. Tigerpaw was in tow not far behind him- they were switching off on searching for prey with their noses, using the senses to locate their targets. He wasn't super concerned with her catching the prey just yet- learning how not to scare it off was one of the first steps in his mind, anyways. The apprentices and mentors oft split in different directions, so when he heard Dreampaw's voice echo from where the water trickled through the territory.

He pushed out of the brush, the taller warrior squinting at the water- then Dreampaw. Water was definitely not his favorite thing. But, with the way Dreampaw was looking... it could have been any number of dangers. Badger, fox, bird.. who knew at this point. "Stay by the forest line, Tigerpaw." Batwing murmured to his apprentice, before approaching Dreampaw, paws just barely dipping into the water. "What is it you're looking at?" He questioned the apprentice.

// @tigerpaw. apprentice tag!

Wolfwind keeps alert. There was no good time to slack off, really. It's not as if she took her job more or less seriously depending on the season, but with sickness sweeping through their camp – and the whole forest, apparently, she thinks she oughta keep her ears extra open and eyes wide as they possibly could be without a fly thinkin' its some special stone to sit on. The hunting patrol has had some success already so far, but there wasn't any reason they couldn't keep goin'. She's quieter than usual, only piping up when Dreampaw would suddenly call their attention to somethin'.

Wolfwind would peer towards him and Batwing, not going as so much to dip her paws in the creek, cause like, why would she ever do that. A light breeze tussles past her fur, reminding her that Leaf - fall was bright on the horizon. " What's what? " she asks, squinting off to where Dreampaw was staring. She didn't see a damn thing.

The orange and chocolate apprentice was trying to stay vigilant, but it was hard to keep focus. She was supposed to be tracking scents and smells, familiar to the fresh kill pile. She was indeed trying hard, but it wasn't the easiest.

Her maw lay the slightest bit open, ears flickering, but her eyes had caught onto a caterpillar, and she gently pawed at it. Before she could get Batwings attention, he had pushed past the bushes and out of sight. So she had no choice but to quickly follow behind him after the call of dreampaw.

Tigerpaw was told to stay at the edge of the forest line, but she too was curious, trying to inhale the scents of the forest. She definitely smelled something now, like a mouse, but she'd keep herself quiet for now while they tried to figure out what was going on.

She didn't want to get lost.

⋆✦⋆ His senses were straining as he waited for someone to take the bait. When footfalls sounded behind him, his ears swiveled but the rest of his body remained motionless. One more moment and he would have someone right where he wanted them. He didn’t need to see. He was sure he could judge the distance with only his hearing.

Very quickly, two things happened for the cats behind Dreampaw at the creek bank.

First, a long greenbrier stalk leapt from the shallow waters no longer held tight in place, hidden beneath the water’s surface, by the hind paws of Dreampaw as he pushed his weight to his front.

Secondly, the tautness of the spiny stalk tossed up water with the force of a whip as it catapulted back to its normal resting state at the water’s edge.

The bank of the creek behind the tortie apprentice transformed into a mini splash zone. In the best case scenario cats too close would be wet with the spray from the swinging brier, or the worse case scenario, they’d be splashed and their fur grazed by the swaying plant.

Too late he realized the voice he heard was not who he had been expecting it to be. Not Asterflame, but Batwing and even Wolfwind too. Nervousness and amusement blossomed in his belly and he couldn’t help but laugh once as he turned around in the shallow of the creek (getting his paws wet for this was well worth it after all), ready to meet the faces of those he’d been patrolling with, ”Ha? Got you.”

/ shhh I did not mean to forget about this!

    The self-proclaimed 'Dark Warrior,' Dreampaw is mischievous and proud of his power. He appreciates a good prank or joke and has earned himself disapproval from his peers for his fondness of causing trouble. He's easily excited and makes decisions on a whim, often driven forward by his impulsive nature. Although he hates losing, he sees every defeat as 'preparation for victory,' and waits patiently for opportunities to present themselves.

    Despite the title he gives himself, Dreampaw isn't as sinister as he claims to be. Rather, he's simply an eccentric and somewhat socially awkward youth with a taste for theatrics. Even so, he knows how to portray an intimidating persona that, combined with his impressive natural skills and thirst for power, help make him live up to his self-appointed title.

The cracking noise of the greenbriar caused Batwing's fur to stand on end. His eyes narrowed, and a keen shout was moments from loosing from his lips as water swept over him. A curse that should not be repeated loosed from Batwing's mouth as he was unavoidably soaked, his nose twitching and heart rattled for just a moment.

And if there was a cat who really hated water, it was Batwing.

He stared at Dreampaw now. First, the chiding about the tree, and now this prank? "Ha. Haha." Batwing's tone was very dry, just about as dry as some of the Riverclan banks right now. He shook out his fur, uttering an apology to Wolfwind for it, before turning his vision towards Dreampaw. "Would you like to be getting ticks out of elder's fur, Dreampaw?" Batwing stated. There was some kind of amused grin on Batwing's muzzle now- but the ire in his eye was far more toxic then just plain happiness. Oh, no, Batwing would take care to make sure it sucked.

⋆✦⋆ The mass of the splash rained down on Batwing and it was glorious! He was soaked. And angry, Dreampaw decided quickly as a particularly foul word escaped Batwing. Without meaning to, he’d taken a step back as if he were expecting retaliation from his inconvenienced victims.

Batwing was all too ready to deliver.

Dreampaw would offer up a rare un-menacing and wary smile of ivory teeth. He didn’t trust the smile on Batwing’s face one bit. ”Hehehe…” he’d add his own frisson of laughter to Batwing’s dry unamused laughs. He didn’t want to be given elder duty. It was gross and would be a waste of his potential when he could be training or hunting or even collecting moss for the beds of the ill. Not that he couldn’t do it. The Dark Warrior could complete any task, no matter how minuscule or impossible.

Dreampaw would shake his head in a ‘nope’ and try to change the subject. ”I believe we’ve been remarkably successful today,” referencing the hunting but also personally and secretly congratulating himself on a successful prank, ”Race you all back to camp? Last one there will be unofficially renamed the pathetic Snailcrawl until sunrise!”

Don’t let your wet fur weigh you down, Batwing, he’d think to himself in fiendish glee as he turned on his paws and attempted to rush past Batwing, Wolfwind, and even Tigerpaw as he ran for the tree line. Which he was fast, very fast, but his stamina would likely only last for a few tree-lengths. Surprisingly, the Dark Warrior was no long-distance runner which made his invitation to race seem all the more off the cuff.
