It felt nice to finally be out and about on patrols again, even if with it often came that sorely familiar drag in his limbs and mind, the grogginess that seemed to plague him no matter how hard he tried to shake it off. Coalfoot considered himself fortunate that his most recent patrol had been free of such a struggle. In fact, the whole border patrol had been calm. Heathersong had even caught a stray crow on the way back.

It was now that he found himself sat with a few of his Clanmates, passing a rabbit around as they shared and laughing lightheartedly over this and that. It was passed back to him, Coalfoot gazing down at it with a somewhat lazy smile as another laugh flitted through his ears. A small giggle escaped him in turn, and he stooped down for another bite.

Only, he dipped further down, nearly on top of the rabbit as his body went lax and eyes slipped shut, mouth still partially agape. Upon closer inspection, it would appear that Coalfoot had fallen asleep.

They were aware they weren't the only one in WindClan with a strange quirk, but the tabby had never bothered to ask Coalfoot how he managed his warrior duties. Snailpaw had avoided adhering to plenty of his family values, but 'don't bother others with your own problems' was a phrase that had stuck with them like stubborn fleas. Reaching out felt like a dangerous thing, opening him up to disappointing those around them and bringing up difficult conversations that they didn't feel ready to deal with. Still, the thought was always on their mind whenever they heard the two-toned warrior, and it was the sound of laughter that drew the apprentice's attention towards the aforementioned Coalfoot. Snailpaw looked away for a moment to assess what noises were coming from the nursery, but when they turned back, they saw the tom slumped over his meal in a sudden slumber.

Their first thought went to the bunny beneath him, and with a speed, his namesake could never achieve, the marbled tabby hopped over. Sapphire eyes went wide at the thought of tragedy occurring, and with a slight sense of urgency, the apprentice aimed to shake Coalfoot's shoulder gently with a paw. It was not the episode itself that worried Snailpaw, they knew Coalfoot could continue as if nothing happened if he was alright. The thought of him choking was buzzing around the feline's brain though, and leaning over, they tried to assess whether or not Coalfoot had any food in his mouth. "You weren't in the middle of chewing something were ya?!" They asked as they looked, their head ducking and diving in an assortment of odd angles, uncertain of how they could tell if someone was choking. If Coalfoot woke up and was able to speak, they supposed that proved the tom was fine.

Oh, merriment in the air! It was always lovely, so lovely, to see people in good spirits. Even in the frigid, grasping, choking air of the winter- even through the hopelessness of hungriness! The moors could be cruel in the leaf-bare, he knew that all too well. Thrill bubbled in his chest at the sight of it- at the experience, surrounded by his Classmates and giggling a little too much along with everyone else. Though he often yearned to be somewhere else, wanted to pull the moon from the sky and dictate when it stayed and changed, times like this reminded him that there was some hope for his home yet.

His mind was away- somewhere else, over the border- at Fourtrees, maybe, when he heard Snailpaw's question. A question directed toward Coalfoot, who had seemed enticed by the rabbit not as a meal but as a pillow! Wasn't this a sight? He'd have to check that one off the list, scribble it down in the notes of his mind- bloodied prey-flesh as a nest! Was it comfortable? Worth testing?

"HAH- What a boring way to die!" Filter ash upon the ground, never-present, the joke burst free from his maw with a hearty serving of cackles. No blood or anything! Not how he'd pick, not at all... second only to falling away in a slumber!

IM SCARED TO GET CLOSE AND I HATE BEING ALONE
I LONG FOR THE FEELING TO NOT FEEL AT ALL
THE HIGHER I GET, THE LOWER I SINK
I CAN'T DROWN MY DEMONS, THEY KNOW HOW TO SWIM

"He's not going to die." Coldsnap scolded as he made his way over, casting a narrowed gaze toward Mallowlark, though he was sure the tom would be able to tell it lacked any true fire behind it. Coldsnap was actualy kind of fond of Mallow. The cat did his job, minded his own business, and never really got into trouble. Weird as they came, sure, but that was hardly something to fault him for when it had no negative effect on those around him.

Typically Cold wasn't one to partake in social activities as casual as this, but he'd been trying to be better lately and upon recognizing some of the cats as ones he actually didn't mind being around, he'd decided to ignore his usual uncertainties and head over- just in time to watch Coalfoot slump forward into the prey they were eating. The tabby watched them for signs of waking up, also a little concerned no that Snailpaw had said something about choking, nut ultimately relieved to see that they were back out and about, the sickness behind them.

"I'll steal some of that rabbit though once it's done being used as a pillow." he added, a faint smirk tugging at his lips.

"AND I'M NOT YOUR PROTAGONIST"

Falling asleep while eating? That was hilarious. Stormgaze happened to be padding by when she saw Coalfoot face first in a rabbit. She quickly broke out a grin and got closer to the group. Her green eyes shining with mischief. They must be really trusting to fall asleep like that. A giggle slips past her lips.

“We should hide the rabbit and tell him he ate it all in his sleep!” The lanky warrior thought that would be funny. Imagine waking up and your meal was missing because you ate it while napping. Of course, she would return the rabbit after having her fun. “He would probably be so confused upon waking up!”

Where the others may laugh at the poor tom's misfortune, Sunstride's smile is softened by sympathy. He has known little illness in his life– were it luck or some paw grander than his own, he could not say, but it left him with little experience in these things. Instead, he had watched the suffering of others. In those moons of recovery, when they were both far younger, he had seen the way that a wound could burn with infection, and how it would recede with only careful treatment. He had seen the exhaustion that came alongside these repairs. The only assumption he knows to make is that Coalfoot must be going through something similar. Were the dirt only soft enough that the rabbit need not be sacrificed in this exhaustion. He too is tempted to slip it from beneath the warrior's dipping head.

Shaking his head and the thought along with it, he joins the small crowd with only a soft shh on his tongue. "Allow the poor tom his rest. If you are to play games with him, do so quietly. He has been through more than enough of late."

  • ooc:
  • SUNSTRIDE. named for his coloration and his bold chasing of fate.
—— cis male, uses he - him. thirty-four moons old. warrior of windclan and former rogue.
—— cautious of clan life, but an apt learner. encourages close bonds between clanmates.
—— loyalty uncertain, cares for those surrounding him. undoubtedly closest to wolfsong.

sunstride is broad and bold– a creature standing above most of windclan, though not a beast beyond its borders, with fur that flames red at its base and deepens to a burnt amber with every whorl and stripe. his eyes, in comparison, are a pale summer's blue, still as bold as the rest of him.

It took more than a few nudges and shakes to rouse the tom, shifting slowly as he slowly came back around to the world of the living. The closest thing to a response he managed was a small hum, half-lidded eyes fluttering shut again for a few heartbeats.

Conversation began to filter through his ears, vague murmurs turning to words, and his eyes opened again to find a pair of wide blue staring right back. A moment passed, two, before he sucked in a decisively waking gasp and bolted upright, only to find everyone else also staring at him. "Uh-" he sputtered, a weak smile tugging at the corner of his lips and an even weaker hah tugging itself from his chest.

Truthfully, he was still trying to figure out what happened- but based on the mixture of looks trained on him, it wasn't hard to guess. Coalfoot swallowed hard. Even Coldsnap was here now. He let out another small laugh, as if to put it behind them, but it was more nervous than humorous. "Sorry, I'm fine." Then, with a glance down to his paws, he realized he still had the rabbit. Oh. Oh.

Quickly, he pushed it over to Snailpaw, who was closest. "Uh- here! Want some? We're sharing. We were just- we were just talking about, um, we were just talking about how much nicer it'll be when this cold is finally behind us. When Newleaf arrives." Right? Oh, Stars, how long was he out? Did they just sit and watch?
