Everything was so much.

The first thing Merlinkit remembered was the light, how garish and intrusive it was on the solace of the unfettered darkness, how it seemed to flood through everything and glared right into cotton features. The second thing Merlinkit remembered was the noise, how bedizen and brazen it was, how it seemed to reverberate endlessly through gossamer ears. The third thing Merlinkit remembered was the ground, how unforgiving and inhospitable it was, how it seemed to reject her want to sink into its depths and never return to this loud and loaded world ever again.

Merlinkit waddled out from the warmth of her parent's belly, movements like a cockleshell whisked onto a temperamental sea, wobbling and unsure of itself even as she had grown. Yellow eyes shimmered with a sense of curiosity of the outside world, of which she felt she still had much to tame. Just weeks ago, the same golden gaze was glazed azure, though had been replaced by twin molten suns in due time. Rabbit-like nose sniffed around, and inquisitive stare looked upwards to the impossibly tall ceiling of the nursery. That was her sky, to the kitten who rarely strayed far from the belly that had weaned her. Suddenly, a fleet shadow of something whisked right in front of her, as brisk as the flutter of the momentary butterfly. To the weak-hearted Merlin, it must have been a giant monster! In fact, she swore she saw needle-sharp claws and quick-whipped tongue! "Meeep! Eeeep! Help meeee!" Came the cries of the scared kitten, clinquant pelt shivering with her cries for help, which seemed to take everything out of the young molly. She screamed for someone to help her - her parents, her siblings, anyone!

༻ ♥༺ Littlekit remembered her first time outside of the nursery vividly, how exciting and overwhelming everything had been- how many pairs of eyes had been on her and her littermates. Now, the chimera kitten tries to spend whatever time she can outside, away from the stuffy nursery and other kits. Sometimes, Littlekit will seek out a friend to play with, or join in on whatever game her litter mates have started, but for the most part the smokey she-kit was content to sit by herself with her crafts, or even just to soak up the sunshine. The latter is what occupies her time now, her mind empty spare for the pure contentment she has let swallow her whole.
Meep! Eeep! Help meeee! The sudden shrieking is quick to startle Littlekit to her paws, head swinging to and fro, trying to pinpoint the danger. Yet, all she see’s is another kit- maybe a moon or so younger than her- flailing around right outside of the nursery.
Littlekit draws over, paws still wary in case there was a hidden threat lurking around. ”Wha… what’s wrong? Are you o-okay?”

Newleaf has brought an abundance of kits to counteract the flourishing forest. Prey that the warriors bring into camp is eaten up almost instantly, and hungry mouths are always crying for more, more. Even the kits still taking nourishment from mother’s milk are impacting the influx of fresh-kill, though the poor scraps have no idea they’re doing so. One of them struggles out of the nursery now on bowlegged paws, tiny face scrunched up with fear at… something. Raccoonstripe had missed the offensive thing that startled little Merlinkit so, but Littlekit is there to comfort her in a flash.

The tabby warrior pads closer to the nursery, then crouches so he is almost level with the tiniest of ThunderClan’s members. “Whoa, whoa, little one. What’s the problem? Anything we can do to help you?” He turns to his great-niece and throws her a wink.

Thundergleam had never seen such a surplus of kits in her entire life. Well... to tell the truth, Thundergleam had never known a single kit other than herself. From Father's teachings she knew well ThunderClan's structure- it had long become second nature, even before she resided here. There were nursery queens and a steady flow of apprentices, which surely meant that kits were born on the regular... logically. Though at first, an uncertainty had bloomed within her regarding how to deal with them... such active little minds, such busy little paws! And often, over-active imaginations...

It appeared the pale molly was not the only one whose interest- and concern- was piqued by the wailing of a kitten. Sharp and shrill from the mouth of the nursery, the noise angled Thundergleam's ears in a twitching, sudden movement. Rose-petal eyes fluttered wide, suppressed by a slight furrow of the brow, concern vague but tangible on porcelain features.

In moments like this... tender and teaching... Thundergleam could not help but feel that small, reoccurring pang of longing. Would that she had been born here... would be welcomed to dote. Instead, it was easier to linger nearby. The important questions had been answered... and she was prepared to be a vital part in the resolution to this problem, should the need arise.

Merlinkit closed her eyes as the wresting shadow eked closer and closer, the umbra of the unknown opening its horrible claws or jaws or maws, to swallow her whole and keep her within gluttonous throat... Oh, it was just Littlekit. Hummingbird heart simmered down, if only for the blink of an errant eye. "Oh! I... I thought you were a big shadow, 'is all." The blue tortoiseshell mewed, glancing upwards to the towering figures of Raccoonstripe and Thundergleam, of which the young molly felt herself shrinking down within elongated silhouettes of the warriors.Had she done something wrong? Discipline hardly came heavy-handed to the kitten who had been obsessed with never doing anything wrong. Despite her loving parents and their rather laissez-faire style of raising her and her brood, she still hated to be on the brunt end of punishment. She was a good kit, or so she swore. "I'm sorry... Didn't mean to startle everyone." Ears folded downwards as Merlinkit bowed her head, eyes cast away as though jewelline light had obnubilated themselves, like she dulled herself down just to prepare for any sort of consequence.

WE WERE PLAYING IN THE SAND

kits were interesting little creatures, that's for sure. orangepaw knows he just was one not too long ago, but he wasn't now, and he has to be a good example for them. this particular kitten seemed rather scared of the world, but that was okay. orangepae could help. his tail gently swayed behind him and he slowly made his way over, crouching down to be eye level with merlinkit and littlekit, a gentle smile on his face as he twitched his ears happily.

"oh, hello!"

despite how excited he was, he was not being very loud at all. he didn't wanna scare the kits.

"you're okay. sometimes things are scary but do you know what I do when I feel scared? i smile! my mom says as long as the sun shines, you gotta smile. and be brave. you're doing great at that already!"

he purred happily, offering a soft and wide smile to the young kit. poor thing seemed so scared but orangepaw could help.
