*+:。.。 In truth, there weren't really a lot of cats he'd miss. His family, Glowingpaw, Wildheart, Fallowbite...besides them, he hadn't really made any proper friends during his apprenticeship. He'd thought he and Briarsong were but...yeah. Another drop in the flood of his chosen stupidity, but at least this meant he would only grieve a handful of lost relationships. Rubbing his paw over his mossy nest, he reflects on the goodbyes he'd shared with each cat. Bitter, but sweet that he'd had least had his moment or two to apologize to those he'd hurt. To smell them and hear them one last time..
He blinks through his scars, feeling something soft against his touch. Soft, downy, sharp at the tip and stiff along the middle...a feather?

He sees himself scrambled against the bark of a tree, dragging himself as best he could with one missing hind leg, eager to reach the top despite his huffing breaths. Close to the bough, he reached for the thick branch, feeling himself slip ever so slightly, confidence shaken, only for at the last minute to make it over. Panting, he looks up to meet bright golden eyes, furrowed with barely disguised worry.
'Addersnap" he mumbles softly, squeezing his eyes shut against the wave of emotion.

The mutiny, the uprising, Skyclaw, Howlingstar... Wrathpaw. Addersnap kept these thoughts from his mind as much as he could, blocking out their incessant, overbearing noise as it echoed for what felt like days on end. His injury, watching Howlingstar fall to the ground... trying to comprehend that his first friend, his best friend, took a life from Howlingstar. Took Pebblestep's life. How many more did he take? Had Wrathpaw been lying, to ensure that Addersnap became his friend so that all trust he put in people from then on would just vanish in a heartbeat?

He remembered the look of horror, disgust, that littered his face that night when he made eye contact with Wrathpaw. How could he? How could he do something like this? Addersnap couldn't even think of the other boy without his blood boiling, pain seared deep into his chest and wailing to be let out. He trusted Wrathpaw. He had grown to like the other, really appreciating his presence when before the cream-colored apprentice had been nothing but a pawn to him. Why did he let himself become friends with someone? Why...

Questions spun around in his head as yellow eyes glare off into the distance, glazed over as though haunted by what he was seeing. It was only when he heard the clumsy scrapes and pants from Wrathpaw that he was alerted of the others presence. Turning his back to Wrathpaw (or so he had thought), Addersnap closed his eyes before opening them to see Wrathpaw's blue ones, seeing the hurt, the anguish that rested in the boy's soul. There was no more innocence, no more light or joy to see him, to be alive. The tabby could only see despair, the broken soul of a boy who just thought he was doing what was right. But Addersnap felt sick, snapping his head to the side and squeezing his eyes shut to try and rid the tears that were already beginning to flood in his eyes. Why did Wrathpaw have to leave?

"Wrathpaw." There was no stutter, no struggle in his voice as he pronounced the other's name with clear perfection. His was the only one that he could pronounce so easily. But there was emotion in his voice -- trembling, heartbroken and upset. Why did he have to go? "I..." Addersnap opened his jaw, but there was nothing. He couldn't say anything. But the pain -- the heartbreak from losing his friend, from seeing him go down such a path that he had expected more for himself than a boy who just wanted to make the world a better place -- it was too much to bear. And finally, he erupted.

"'Y are ya leavin'? 'Y couldn't ya convince 'em to le' ya st- stay, Wrathpaw? Why did ya go with Sky- Skyclaw, 'y did ya... why did ya do all that.." He was sobbing at this point, a mess. Addersnap couldn't look Wrathpaw in the eyes as he spoke again, the hurt too visible in his sunlit eyes. "Why'd'ya have-ta go 'n' leave for othe' friends when ya had me?" It was almost a whisper, voice raw and compassionate. It hadn't Wrathpaw who needed Addersnap like he had thought, but Addersnap who needed Wrathpaw.
