HISTORY
— During the Yellowcough pandemic, Nettlekit begins to experience the grim truth of death and illness. When RiverClan is driven out of their camp by rogues, his temperament takes on a much more callous, angry form. Whether or not this is a defense mechanism for the boy, he ultimately finds himself causing an assortment of problems for RiverClan's hosts, SkyClan, who had agreed to shelter them. At this time, his mother, Reedflower, becomes ill with yellowcough.
— During the rogue incursion, RiverClan and SkyClan are both driven out of SkyClan's camp. The two clans eventually find their way to ShadowClan, soon discovering that WindClan and ThunderClan have been forced out of their homes as well. With many cats wounded and sick from Yellowcough, Chilledstar reluctantly allows the four groups to shelter on their territory, though understandably, nobody is happy about it. During this time, RiverClan discovers that Cicadastar had been killed by the rogues. Additionally, Reedflower, Nettlekit and Bristlekit's mother, is discovered dead from Yellowcough.
— After a fierce battle, RiverClan is finally able to return home, though Nettlekit is still grieving the loss of his leader and mother. Shortly after their return to camp, Smokethroat calls a clan meeting, where Nettlekit and his brother are apprenticed. Nettlepaw receives Pikesplash as a mentor. When a group of cats return from the moon-long journey to retrieve lungwort for the sick cats, Nettlepaw finds himself blaming them for the trauma RiverClan had been forced to face in their absence. As a result, tensions rise.
— As a newly made apprentice, Nettlepaw struggles with his blindness, and ultimately falls behind some of his peers. As a result of his impatience and seeming inability to hunt where other apprentices excelled, Nettlepaw begins to scavenge crowfood instead, tracking the corpses by their powerful smell. The clan is none the wiser, and Nettlepaw becomes known as a bit of a hunting prodigy. Deep inside, guilt begins to fester when a RiverClan elder falls ill from one of his crowfood catches. As his training continues, Pikesplash, the boy's mentor, is surprised at how good Nettlepaw is at tracking and wrestling. Soon enough, Nettlepaw is showing his prowess in low risk sparring against his fellow apprentices.
— When an owl attacks the camp, and a kitten named Bitekit, Nettlepaw heroically attempts to protect his younger clan-mate, helping in driving the raptor away. In doing so, he earns his first scar, a notched ear. Eventually, Nettlepaw does make his very first catch of fresh prey, a bird called a robin. Unfortunately, around the same time, Pikesplash became aware of Nettlepaw's habit of scavenging crowfood. Confronted, Nettlepaw reacts defensively, before claiming that it was PIkesplash's fault for not being a good enough teacher. As a result, the warrior attacks Nettlepaw, and the two end up in a brief scuffle.
