camp ONE STEP FORWARD [ patrol assignments ]

( ) the verdant gaze of the feline flicks across the gathered faces of her warriors as she clears her throat. it is once again time to assign patrols, and this moon is is willowroot's turn. half of her mind wonders vaguely if cicadastar will ever choose a new deputy, or if he plans to let his lead warriors do the deputy's duties for moons to come. it doesn't particularly matter - cicadastar does not seem keen on dying anytime soon, but a deputy would be nice. clearing the thought from her head, the smoke begins to address the clan. "it's time to give out patrols once again. i'd thank you to complete these in a timely manner, and speak with me if there are any issues. as always, although i hardly think the reminder necessary, we do not trespass, nor intentionally provoke other clans." the lead warrior pauses to let this sink in, sweeping a severe eye across those gathered. "now, on to patrol assignments. mudpelt, i would like you to take emberflower, dogteeth, and ripplesnap to the windclan border. bring along your apprentices if you see fit. check for trespassing scents, and any other suspicious signs." she nods to the earthen hued tom, knowing mudpelt will be a responsible leader.

"snakeblink, please take clayfur, tallwave, and hyacinthbreath to the skyclan border, along with your apprentices. you may ask for news pertaining to their missing clanmates if you wish, but please try to not incite any argument about the recent battles." snakeblink has a sharp tongue and a short temper, but he'll keep everyone in check. besides, it will be a good experience for frogpaw and antlerpaw to see a border patrol.

"cindershade, you will take lichentail, crawlingroach, and wolfglade to the thunderclan border, with your apprentices." she addresses her rosetted friend. "now, be civil. don't try to start any fights. there is bad blood between our two clans, but we will be as courteous as we can." she knows in her heart this reminder is pointless - after all, cindershade will do what cindershade does. still, it's an attempt. she'll flash a smile at her friend as she moves on.

"as for hunting patrols, i'd like lakemoon to take crappiepaw, and petalnose to hunt where you see fit. i'd also like smokethroat to take hazecloud, sneezefur, and dovepaw on a different hunting patrol. beesong, i have assigned catfishpaw, hazepaw, and mosspaw to aid you and ravenpaw in herb gathering. as always, feel free to take them out when you wish, and report back if any trouble occurs." she rests her gaze on her two daughters and haze's friend, all mischievous, although at least mosspaw is slightly more levelheaded. "listen to beesong and do as they say," she warns the apprentices. "if you do not, it will be picking ticks and cleaning moss for a moon."

satisfied with herself, willowroot will step back, flicking her tail to dismiss those gathered. "please let me know if any changes need to be made. if i haven't assigned you a patrol, please take it as a sign to hunt or help out in camp. one last reminder that no apprentices should be leaving camp without an older cat accompanying them. we cannot risk anything. thank you all!"

Hyacinthbreath hears her name called for a patrol, ears perking up curiously to listen only to sag when she hears Clayfur's name. He was a dependable tom, loved by his clanmates, but the guilt still ate at her and made her hesitant to follow the tom. Thankfully, Snakeblink was the one who was leading the patrol. So, she rises to her paws and begins to make her way over to her patrol. SkyClan.. They had some troubles recently, didn't they? She shrugs her shoulders, waiting for her patrol to leave.

Reactions: willowroot
Unlike last moon, the apprentices chosen to help Ravenpaw and his mentor were two of Willowroot's kits and the ever fashionable Catfishpaw. "As long as you don't pick up the flowering herbs and put them in my pelt." The dark-furred apprentice droned, looking over his shoulder in an aloof manner as he waited for the apprentices to gather near he and Beesong.

Distracted, Ravenpaw looked over for Crappiepaw and Dovepaw. Had they both been sent on hunting patrols? He couldn't remember if he heard right. Ravenpaw shook his head. He had been getting far too distracted lately. It would do well for him to be able to calm himself on a herb patrol.

The call for patrols goes up, and the young calico strides over to stand before Willowroot. They hope that they are put on a herb patrol again. Last time was… much less fun than they hoped, but perhaps they can make up for it this time around. Perhaps they can prove to Beesong that they are worth more than a single word, than a rejection. They hold their head high, paws dancing in anticipation upon the dirt.

But they are not assigned to a herb patrol. They are assigned to a hunting patrol. (Did Beesong ask specifically for them to be excluded? Did they do something more wrong than they thought?) Their brows furrow, and the apprentice shoots a halfhearted glare in Ravenpaw’s direction—stupid. This is all so stupid, so silly, so foolish. They continue to dwell on rejection, on invisibility, on replacements when none of it matters in the end. They are never going to be more than what they are.

They will be a real RiverClanner soon, their mentor says, and they need to leave their hopes in the past where they belong.

They look around for Lakemoon and Petalnose. They do not like the latter, and the former is intimidating and difficult to read. But they will grit their teeth and follow orders, because Crappiepaw is a good cat, and they will be a warrior soon. They will have nothing to do except for hunting soon, no more training days, no more idle days spent resting around the camp that they hate. They straighten up as much as their frame will allow, narrowed green eyes attempting to catch sight of the other cats on their patrol.
[ my my, cold hearted child ]

It’s one of those days, again. Everything feels normal, but just… a bit to the left. There’s clearly something missing, and Clay feels the empty space beside him harder than ever. There are so many empty spaces in RiverClan. Iciclefang, Gillsight, Koispots, Boneripple and her kits—they all carry with them the weight of loss, and Clayfur wonders whether they understand the good and bad days as well.

Through the haze he hears his name called, but doesn’t hear where he’s going. He’s going somewhere with Snakeblink, he thinks, and Hyacinthbreath. Hazel eyes flicker to the lilac-striped feline, and he sighs heavily. If Antlerpaw’s training wasn’t so important, he might skip out on this patrol entirely. He doesn’t want to set foot anywhere near the territories of any other clan. WindClan took his mate, ThunderClan took his rocks—and SkyClan’s leader stood by and watched. Isn’t that just his luck, that each of the three clans bordering RiverClan are just searching for a back to sink their claws into?
[ YOU ARE THE STARS TO ME ]

It wasn't necessarily somewhere she preferred to go, they had a lot of loud mouths and empty heads. They talked a lot of shit for a group that only thrived on taking more than they needed to survive, bullying... being general nuisances. Flicking her ear at the memory of the last time she'd been at that border with Fernpaw, she wondered if the boy had been sent towards WindClan to prevent another petty cross-river argument involving him.

Sablepaw seemed a bit more docile... but she hadn't interacted with the apprentice much and wasn't sure her suspicious were true to nature. Looking towards Cindershade for further instruction, the molly made a note of the scolding Willowroot had given. No picking fights...

Only if ThunderClan doesn't start one first.

In every situation you give me peace
Willowroot instructs the patrol she will be part of to head toward thunderclan and she feels as if a stone has fallen into the pit of her stomach. Periwinkle eyes give her mentor a sidelong glance. Despite Willowroot's avid warnings not to start trouble and remain cordial Sablepaw wonders if the dark molly is taking any of it to heart. She knew how much Cindershade despised the neighboring clan. A gentle sigh parts from her ebony maw as she wanders closer to the lead warrior's side. Quietly she awaits their departure and or further instruction.
Don't gotta be afraid because you're in the lead
