Her and her cousins are all apprentices now, each with mentors of their own. It’s weird not having to stay in SkyClan’s camp anymore, but it’s fun getting to explore the territory in full! Sangriapaw has realized that she likes being an apprentice, and she especially likes being Johnnyflame’s apprentice. The only problem is… aside from becoming an apprentice, nothing else was good at the meeting! First Figfeather got called a lead warrior, and she got assigned Daisypaw as an apprentice, so Sangriapaw will probably see her way less now… And then Twitchbolt stopped being the deputy, and there’s a new deputy. Cherryblossom is Orangestar’s daughter, so maybe she’ll be an okay deputy, but she’ll never be as cool as Twitchbolt is. Or… was.

The thoughts about deputies remind the apprentice of something else—one of her ancestors was SkyClan’s deputy! Daisyflight was probably the best deputy ever. Sangriapaw wishes she could have met the she-cat while she was still alive, but she’s in StarClan with Blazestar now, and so there’s no chance of meeting her. The only way to know what she was like is to ask Figfeather, or any of her parent’s siblings. So when she manages to catch most of their family during a slow, calm afternoon, the cinnamon torbie is quick to gather them. Directed toward the warriors is a question, bright and curious: "What was Daisyflight like?" She’s been told many small things about her grandmother, but they have mostly been one-off comments or quips. She doesn’t know anything of substance, like what the first deputy of SkyClan had liked to eat—or how she had become deputy in the first place. "She was our grandma, right? And the deputy? What did she do to be the deputy?"

Figfeather has taken a seat next to Butterflytuft during this family gathering. Together they share a squirrel, though Figfeather is aware she is doing a vast majority of the eating. She can’t blame her older sister, the loss of Dandelionwish had been abrupt, his loss had shocked the entire clan.

Pushing the squirrel encouragingly closer to the permanent-queen she glances up at Sangriapaw. What was Daisyflight like? She tosses a look in the direction of her siblings initially taken back by this inquiry. Still, she was pleased to hear Sangriapaw was taking an interest in her roots. She should be proud to be the granddaughter of SkyClan’s very first deputy.

”Yes, she would have been.” Figfeather meows, memories of Daisyflight flooding her mind. ”SkyClan’s very first deputy…” Trailing off she leaves room for Butterflytuft and Greeneyes to get their own words on their mother in. They were far better at this type of thing than she was anyhow.

Hungrily, he dug into his share of prey, his bottlebrush tail waving side to side. Elation thrummed through the newly named paw's blood like fire. Even if Slate was a total bore, he still looked forward to training alongside his kin. Now, with Figfeather becoming a Lead Warrior, he was starting to feel the pressure of expectations again. After he and Sangriapaw's tree incident as kits, he'd made it a point to get even better at climbing, to prove to his parents he was worthy of praise and would be an exceptional apprentice.

Such thoughts made a grin bloom bright and cheeky across his maw, showing off bits of his latest meal, caught between pearly whites, of a scrappy little squirrel they'd (badly) managed to capture. His sibling's sudden questioning piqued the fluffy tom's curiosity, head swiveling to look at Figfeather with wide eyes, only for his ears to fall halfway with dismay. You could've been more descriptive than that! Minding his tongue, he instead looked to Fantastream. "Yeah! What did she look like?" He wondered if any part of him resembled the former deputy.

TIL THE WORDS START SLURRIN

✧ . Greeneyes always cherishes any time he’s able to spend with his family, but he does so now more than ever. His nieces and nephews are apprentices now, often out training instead of a nursery visit away, or toddling behind Fantastream upon the daylight warrior’s arrival. Figfeather stands as a lead warrior just as him now, busy just as he is, and no longer can he expect to go hunting with Butterflytuft anytime soon.

A slow day in camp and a near-mirror in his niece’s freckled form bring them all together for once, for the first time in — Stars, he’s lost track. He lounges near Butterflytuft and Figfeather, an avian meal separate from theirs at his paws as Sangriapaw quips a question toward them. His mother’s name brings a sad smile to his face as her granddaughter speaks it. Greeneyes’ ears twitch in thought, memories of his mother brought forth in his mind. How does he even begin to describe his mother, the first deputy of SkyClan?

I’m not too sure, really — “ the lead warrior admits to his nieces second question, ears flattening in embarrassment at the realization, at the key part of his history, his clan’s history he fails to be able to retell, “ She was already deputy when we were born… “ Greeneyes words trail off, his gaze shifting to his eldest sister, “ Do you know?

Coffeepaw, bright and bursting with energy as usual asks another question of his mother, and he hums in thought.

I’d say Butterflytuft looks the most like her, “ he offers, with a smile toward his adoptive sister, “ Though her fur was a bit lighter, and she had green eyes too.

Not as bright as his own namesake, diluted just as her fur. As his eyes shift back to his youngest kin, to those carrying their own sets of viridian blinking back at him, he can’t help but wonder if this is a trait they carry from her — a trace of their grandmother they’ll only get to meet when the stars greet them in days far off from now.

Her side of the squirrel lays mostly untouched as Butterflytuft presses against her sister, the touch comforting her more than most can. While Greeneyes and Figfeather talk, she zones out, only blinking back to attention when a marmalade paw pushes the fresh-kill closer to her. She lifts her eyes, feeling guilty that the other even has to coddle her like this, and so she offers a small, sad smile in agreement. Right. Sorry. I should eat more, shouldn't I?

As she forces a bite down, her ears prick to listen to Sangriapaw's question. Daisyflight? Her expression softens as a calm falls over her. She loves that her niece and nephew are curious about their grandmother; for how amazing of a cat she was, she deserves it. It's then that she realizes that yes, her little siblings hadn't been born yet when their mother was named deputy. She herself had only been a kit at her side; she recalls watching her leave the nursery to waddle up to the High Branch, pregnant as ever. She looked so strong, even then.

She giggles softly in amusement as Greeneyes says she looked the most like their mother. It would be more serious if she weren't adopted by her. "She was beautiful. She had the prettiest blue and gold fur, and when she spoke, everyone listened." Her eyes become sad again as she remembers her mother, but not in any sort of tragic way. She just misses her. "I was very young. Her belly was heavy with Figfeather, Greeneyes, Violetnose and Snowpath. But Blazestar knew that wouldn't stop her from being the best deputy she could be. She earned it, because...she always knew the right thing to say and do. She was the most capable, trustworthy cat anyone could be lucky enough to say they knew."
