border PRETTY AS A VINE ♡ thunderclan dawn patrol

Palefire couldn't seem to keep from being called back to the Windclan border. This would be her third time making a trip out here in just the last few weeks, and frankly, she was getting tired of looking at those empty moors. Who could ever prefer all that endless grass to the beauty and variety of a forest? The sun was only just beginning to peak over the horizon, painting the sky in shades of purple and red as the small patrol finally reached the Thunderclan territory line. So far, all was quiet, but she knew well enough that things never stayed that way for long. The lynx-point wordlessly motioned for her clanmates to begin marking, eager to move along and get back home. She quickly rubbed her shoulder against the bare branches of a nearby bush, before turning to catch her apprentices' attention.

"Ivorypaw, Meadowpaw. I think this is a good opportunity to see if you've learned anything since the last time we were here." The young warrior paused, stretching to brush her spine against a large boulder before levelling the pair of girls with an expectant blue gaze. "What is Windclan's main type of prey?" It was an easy question, one they ought to have known even before becoming apprentices, but she was feeling generous today. Last time, she had given them a brief recounting of Windclan's past mutiny, a sore subject now for Thunderclan and one she would rather avoid on this calm morning. But a rustle in the brush nearby had her ears swivelling away, sapphire eyes now searching the heather for who - or what - had come along to ruin their peaceful outing.

Meadowpaw is quiet today. To those that knew her, this was almost uncharacteristic, worrying in the sort of way where she half expects her patrol mates to be asking if she was okay any second now. One glance in her direction though and it wouldn't be difficult to tell why her lips were so sealed. Her green eyes cannot seem to leave the sky above free of her gaze because there, in the fleeting moments where night gives way to day, there were two stars still hanging over them and she could almost swear one was light blue and the other a brillant gold. She could swear they were winking at her.

So fascinated as she is by this site she nearly trips when her foot collides with a tree root. She stumbles forward, colliding with another patrol member, but luckily she's able to catch herself before making a complete embarrassment of herself "My bad!" she chirps quickly, blinking her eyes sleepily "I 'spose I'm not fully awake yet." she admits, rolling her shoulders.

She REALLY must not have been paying attention, she thinks, because since when did they get to the WindClan border already? She watches with a almost blank stare as her mentor walks up to the heather and rubs against it. It takes her a moment to realize Palefire's mouth is moving, that she's saying anything at all when all of a sudden it registers. It's like a light has been turned on in Meadowpaw's eyes, she brightens immediately "OH,I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW!" she squeals, bouncing on the balls of her feet excitedly. Her uncle Raccoonstripe had taught her about ALL the clans when she had been younger, and now that lesson was FINALLY paying off!

If only she could actually remember..

She blinks a few times, a long awkward pause stretching out as she realizes she doesn't actually know. She scours her brain, searching for the memory but... Nothing. Nada. Zilch! "Uhhhh Ummmm they uhhhh" she stalls for time, green eyes desperately searching the landscape for clues.

"You got this!" calls Sedgepounce, emerging from the brush with heather-combed fur and an amused, lopsided smile. Their borders have seen a lot of ThunderClan lately—he wonders if Flamestar is trying to establish a routine, desperate for a new sense of normal in the same way as Sunstar's regime had been after Sootstar.

Sedgepounce doesn't recognize most members of this patrol, save for a familiarly jovial tom and his apprentice, but it seems they're all using the chance to do some teaching. He harbors no ill-will as he sets twinkling eyes toward Meadowpaw. Her naive eagerness is endearing. "They're fast, and they burrow...Long ears...And they kick pretty hard." Spotted ears flick forward in anticipation of one of the apprentices snagging the answer, like watching a race with no clear winner.

Dutifully, his gaze flickers to Bunnypaw beside him. She'd completely frozen up the last time they encountered a ThunderClan patrol, but he hopes the exposure, and the calm, cool morning, will have thawed some of that anxiety she seems to harbor.

YOU ALWAYS SAID HOW YOU LIKE DOGS

sick. that's how they feel. they walk with the patrol but clearly not right beside them. they are distancing themself but even that doesn't work because they can still hear the windclanner trying to encourage one of their own apprentices rather... cheerfully. their former mentor would have sooner died than to do something like that. they only snort, tail lashing back and forth, unamused look as they look at the windclanner before turning to meadowpaw.Meadowlands.

"if you know, then say it already. no need to stall."

her tone is firm but ultimately disinterested. she doesn't care if an apprentice knows whatever the fuck windclan is eating. if she can hunt, or if she can fight, then she is of use to thunderclan. if not... then she's not any use to any clan at all. knowing the prey's name doesn't make it any easier to catch. if she knew what the prey looked like, how it moved and if she could catch if when it decided to hop across borders that it doesn't care for, then that's all that matters.

"if you don't know it, don't say it. say you don't know. then your mentor will tell you. or maybe they won't. just ask if you're not sure."

they won't give the answer either. meadowpaw isn't their apprentice. they don't even want one. this was probably the nicest they've been to anyone other than houndshade in moons. meadowpaw was just lucky that stagsnarl isn't in the worst of moods.

Bunnypaw pregames this patrol with several long and deep breaths, eyes focused on the tree line ahead of them. She notes how as they grow closer, the leaves become clearer - how beasts and prey alike must hide in those limbs, like how rabbits and badgers hide in tunnels beneath the moors. She almost asks Sedgepounce a question, her maw slightly parted, when the shouting of another apprentice catches her off guard. Her pelt ruffles and she trots a few steps faster to keep to his side.

He greets them with positivity, and Bunnypaw greets them with wide, blown out eyes. Prey, they're talking about prey. Sedgepounce offers hints where one of the felines across the way barks orders with a terse and angry tone. The she-cat clings to her mentor, clings to all he says. Prey, prey, prey.

"... It's a bunny," Bunnypaw murmurs too softly for the ThunderClan cats to hear. Her tall ears lower too slowly, her legs tense with the need to kick off from the ground. She swallows thickly. Prey.
