twolegplace [priv] THE OLDER I GET ✿ search party

"SUREFIRE, YEAH, THE SETTING SUN WANTS COMPANY"
The sun high above them was masked with snowclad clouds, their heavy white layers pressing the cold at their backs. Daisyflight’s paws scarcely touched the slush beneath them as she sped through the streets. She needed to find her daughter, and quickly. A day had already passed since her suspected disappearance. At first, the mother’s worries had simply bubbled into clipped queries to clanmates, then a hasty trek across the territory. All the while there was that little nag in her mind.

What did her dad look like, the spire… How had she missed it? Those questions had fed a plan. Now her daughter was straying close to the one cat she sought to hide her from. If they met- how could she talk past his charm? He had his tricks, if he wrought a rift between them she didn’t know what she’d do. Self-directed fury lashed into her nerves, wicking the breath from her lungs.

An errant glance caught the eyes of those behind her. Once all other options had been ruled out, it had taken mere moments to gather up a small patrol and leave the territory. Daisyflight had hurried her apprentice and Tallulahwing into action immediately. Figpaw’s mentor wasn’t to blame for her disappearance, and she was a capable warrior. "We aren’t far. The area I spoke of is just up ahead."

Lazily trimmed evergreens lay flush against the cobbled flank of the nest, their branches smoked with snow. Above them towered the fabled spire, its arched hollows a novelty amongst the blocky exteriors around them. A clang rang flagrantly and Daisyflight’s ears flattened in habit, aware of the tolls that would follow.

And there, in the medley of scents anchored in the frosty air- Figpaw. "She’s nearby! Quickly, fan out. Be wary of the thunderpath, monsters are brazen in these parts." The strip of tar was wider than most in the area, and the twolegs that controlled the beasts were often as blind as they came when zipping across it.

Heart in her throat, Daisyflight hurried along the snowy embankment. Ignoring her own advice, the molly scouted the fringes of the char river. A smear of burgundy caught her eye, its malignant shade almost hidden in the mucky slush the monsters left in their wake.

"Blood... There’s blood! Figpaw!" Subtlety be damned, if her daughter was out here bleeding the whole twolegplace could hear her all they like. The worst- Let it not be the worst.

In and out of consciousness, Figpaw would leave and return to reality often during her stay in the culvert. So long as she kept her broken leg still it felt numb, the little girl didn't know if her nerves had been smushed to a pulp or if it was the cold. She did discover though that moving it the slightest bit did cause terrible, shrieking pain to flare up within it.

The red tabby hated looking at it, she hated seeing what her leg has become. It was so... ugly and twisted, and now that time has passed Figpaw was certain it looked worse now than when she had first crawled into this twoleg made tunnel. The areas where her skin had been ripped were cleary dirty and puffy, and the area her bone had snapped has swelled up almost double its normal size. Figpaw has tried to groom it, tried to put snow on it, but she can't tell if she's making it worse or better.

Ma would know what to do... but she was so far away from Figpaw in the pine forest. There was no way Figpaw could walk... maybe crawl, but all the way there? Surely a twoleg or worse would nab her before she could manage. The little girl wasn't very smart, but she felt her only option was to stay and pray that SkyClan would find her. Yet with each fleeting second she began to lose hope.

Until she heard it.
Figpaw!

At first she's certain she's having an auditory hallucination, it couldn't be...?
Then she heard paws crunching in the snow, "...Ma?!" Figpaw cries out, her voice hoarse.

It felt weird being whipped into action this way, so hurriedly pursued as if he was a reliable figure- as if he was someone needed. It was an unfamiliar scenario to say the least- and it would not be unwelcome if the circumstance had not been quite so dire. Figpaw- missing. He'd seen her sneak out of camp before, trailing after Quillpaw; he'd seen it, and what had he done then? He'd just... gone with it. Not warned her, not told Daisyflight, not- oh, but it was selfish to spiral like this! And it wasn't fair to blame her when he didn't know what had happened, when he didn't-

Blood. His mind thrummed with thoughts of Centipedepaw, an undeserved fate- had the same destiny befallen Figpaw? Oh, he hoped not, he hoped not- hoped so very much not. The thunderpath- the monsters. The blood- if anyone ever again told him he was being irrational, he would- he would-!

Ma! A voice- there, up ahead. Ears angled themselves to attention, eyes flung as wide as they could be. His dithering gait carried him over, a blue or copper-and-ice, a rush. His toes might fall off from this cold, but- whatever had happened to Figpaw made him abandon care for such a trivial worry. It gnawed there, at the back of his mind- but was blown out like the shatter of glass when his gaze finally befell the sight.

"D-Daisyflight! Here!" Twitchpaw called out before he even met eyes with his fellow apprentice, certain it was here. Who else would be out here in this cold? But- as he drew closer and fully took in the sight of the injury, Twitchpaw could say no more. The rouge on the snow, scarlet-wept... the... beneath the veil of winter's new snowfall, something he did not want to see and something he could not look away from. "Oh, oh...!" A terrified stammer was all that could fall from him, tears thickening his voice. How- was she alright? And of course she wasn't but- would she be?

This is far from the first time Figpaw has gone off on her own, and Tallulahwing had simply simmered with quiet rage this most recent time her apprentice hadn't reported for duty. She likes to think she's a decent mentor -- perhaps not the best, but she does what she can to whip the flighty little she-cat into shape so she can become as fine of a warrior as her mother someday.

When Daisyflight had rallied her and Twitchpaw for a search party, Tallulahwing's anger had cooled into worry. It wasn't like Figpaw to disappear for so long, and the haunted look in Daisyflight's eyes told her everything she needed to know.

The daylight warrior is familiar with the streets they walk. She trudges through the street slush after her lead warrior, eyes glowing pale with mounting concern. Figpaw shouldn't be out here, she thinks to herself. She belongs in the forest with her Clanmates. She belongs flyin' through the trees. Ain't no trees out here to speak of...

She perks her ears at Daisyflight's instructions. "She's nearby! Quickly, fan out. Be wary of the Thunderpath, monsters are brazen in these parts." Tallulahwing nods her assent. "Ain't they always..."

But the blood... the blood causes her paws to still. Her own blood begins to freeze like the muddy water on the streets. "Ma?!" A croak from the snowbank.

Twitchpaw breaks rank to run to her, and she can't help but follow at his heels. The tabby is laying prone in the snow, and her leg. Oh, stars, the blood, the leg --

"StarClan bless you, Little Miss," she chokes. She's almost knocked over by her relief to see the girl alive, but the leg... how are they going to get her back to camp, how?... "What happened t'you, Missy? What happened?" Oh, her apprentice, red fur like a squirrel as she streaks across branches --

Tallulahwing is no medicine cat, but a sickening feeling begins to toil in her belly.

Never again...

"SUREFIRE, YEAH, THE SETTING SUN WANTS COMPANY"
That little whimper, it snatched the warmth from her pelt and burnt it through her lungs instead. She was there, near- alive-! Daisyflight’s paws, flanks and chin were dunked without ceremony in a filth-sprayed snow drift in her haste. Twitchpaw was visible first, and his fear fuelled her own. "I’m coming, we’re here it’s okay, it’ll be okay."

Punching her way towards the concrete log, she brushed passed Tallulahwing carefully to peep within. A tremor wove down her spine at the sight, fur ordinarily so delightfully bright was stained with blood. Her daughter, her leg… the warrior’s breath hitched deep into her throat.

At the inquiry of what happened, Daisyflight stumbled closer. “Yes, yes what happened?” She had a sense, a mangling like that was not uncommon amongst strays. And why had Figpaw come so far out here? She was too brave, didn’t understand the harm… No. It had been her own fault. If only she’d connected the dots sooner.

"Can you stand? We’ll… we’ll get you back. Dawnglare will heal you- he must." He’d have claws at his neck if he didn’t. A tentative paw touched Figpaw’s brow along with a dishevelled tail hooked around her frame. "You must be so cold."

/sorry this is short!

Oh- another feline, Twitchpaw! Figpaw had sworn there was a chance she'd never lay eyes on him- or any SkyClanner again. Through clattering teeth she grins- though she's pretty sure she actually wants to cry. While she's relieved it doesn't dismiss the fact her world was turned upside down and that there was no returning to the world she once knew. Tallulahwing and Daisyflight arrive shortly after the apprentice, it is when they ask what happened she is afraid tears no longer can be held back.

She looks to Daisyflight, expecting to find shame in her eyes as she spoke. "I- I saw him... and-" she shakes her head, she cannot bear to explain it in full detail. "I was hit." Her explanation was vague, but certainly they could put the puzzle pieces together, surely they did not make her revisit what happened.

Can you stand? Her teeth continue to clatter as she shakes and trembles in the cold, "Tch tch tch tch tch... I- tch, don't know..." She hasn't tried to get up or even really move since she settled within the tunnel. If she was going to get out of here she knew she had to though...

So she tries to find the strength, and she tries to stand but she doesn't succeed without groans and whines of pain, not to mention major assistance from the cats at her side.
