MAYBE I'D BE A SAINT IF I WEREN'T ————————————

Magpiepaw is heavy.

It’s the single thought circling through Snakeblink’s mind; the only one he’ll allow himself to linger on, because anything more and he might just tear off his whiskers and start wailing, which would help precisely no one. Magpiepaw was young and not all that big for its age and yet its body is heavy, straining Snakeblink’s neck as he grits his teeth around their scruff, doing his best not to drag them through the mud too severely though he’s not the tallest cat out there. He doesn’t think Midnightash would forgive him if he were to bump Magpiepaw into every loose tree root and rock; then again she is hardly in a state to notice, or comment.

Approaching camp is a relief until it’s not: until he has to pull the limp body through the water, which is an arduous task in itself, and then has to face the clan with this grim news. He lays the body down as gently as he can, considering, glad to be rid of the weight, though he would take a thousand fox lengths through the water carrying it again if only they would stir awake at the end of it.

”Please, would someone fetch Moonbeam?” He asks, briefly too weary to explain. ”There has been an… unfortunate accident.”

જ➶ There is nothing in her eyes, cold deaded gaze strictly focused on the body that Snakeblink carries. Her tail drags the ground the whole way back to camp as her mind tries to comprehend the circumstances that have happened. Yet a dark cloud makes thinking hard, her chest too tight for sounds to escape. Dead. It's dead and gone. Her maw trembles as she steps into the water that frowned her friend. A fine trembling taking place in her limbs. With what she can do she tries to help Snakeblink along through the river to the dry grounds of the camp. Her body starts to shiver and shake as Magpiepaw is laid down upon the ground for everyone to see. It solidifies it all. This is real and everyone can see it. Everyone knows. Water fills her vision but she holds back her chocked sobs.

Instead she lays down beside the body, quietly tucking her head against their scruff. Silence meeting silence as they wait for Moonbeam to come and prepare the body for vigil.

࿐ ࿔*:・゚ — Beefang had went ahead of the pair to alert her mate of what had happened to Magpiepaw as she slipped into the medicine den and parted her jaws to speak "Magpiepaw's dead." It's spoken simply without much emotion to her voice as she had never been close to the bicolored feline to begin with but it's a shame that another clanmate had fallen victim to the river and so soon after shared snide remarks with Midnightash. Her snowy dipped paws shuffle in the slightest as her lone amber eye focuses onto the pale fur of the molly that stands before her and adds on with a small shake of her helm "Snakeblink and Midnightash brought them back..." The black smoke knows that it isn't easy for Moonbeam to lose clanmates without attempting to save them first but life is cruel and takes away swiftly while no one pays attention.

The heavily scarred moggy presses gently against her best friend nuzzling her nose into the fuzzier part of her neck fur in a brief comforting manner only to slip out from the den to focus her attention onto Snakeblink noting that he seemed exhausted from dragging the stilled form of the apprentice. She would've offered to help but she doubts that Midnightash would allow such a thing considering their tense relationship and distaste for one another, her feathery tail swept behind her glancing to Magpiepaw once more wondering if it had fallen victim to the river the same way as Brookstorm had. A part of her wonders if it'd obtain its full name today due to having its life end too quick and too soon, although, that decision is for Lichenstar to make alone.

May the stars welcome you. Beefang thinks silently in respect for Magpiepaw and doesn't bother to offer a 'sorry for your loss' to Midnightash, the grudge that she held moons ago still grasped close to her chest and it would remain there until ether of them drew their final breath.

It is a surprise to hear the words that come from Beefang's maw, the simplicity of the words that carried such weight. An apprentice so close to becoming a warrior - had it just had a moon left? two? - and the thought of it tugged the corners of the medicine cat's maw down before opening and closing for a moment before eyes would search her mate for simply a moment, the question of What happened? stuck in her throat before her head would nod once and she would begin moving, small smile of reassurance offered to the monochrome warrior as nose nuzzled into the medicine cat's white fur for just a moment before they exit the den together. Orange eyes landed quickly on the wet fur of the apprentice, watches as Midnightash presses her head against it's body for the last time before the medicine cat would clear her throat quietly, simply to grab the attention and warn of her arrival before speaking. "Could one of you get Gladefrost and Frecklepaw and the other get Lichenstar?"

It was directed at Beefang and Snakeblink, family and leader needed to know first if possible though Moonbeam knew curious eyes would seek out what had happened soon if they hadn't already. She knew Gladefrost wouldn't be happy - Moonbeam didn't know anyone who would be - but especially with Midnightash there, the tension between the two cats not a secret to those who kept track of things, and a pregnant queen was a force to be reckoned with. "Midnightash," Soft voice spoke to the warrior as she lie down beside the other, "I know that you were close with Magpiepaw... do you want to help with it's vigil?" She would not deny the other the ability to help with her best friend's vigil, even if Gladefrost would not want the other anywhere near her sibling. If the warrior showed any signs of agreement the medicine cat would show her how to lick the apprentice's fur so that it dried quicker, so that it didn't bode so unwell for those who saw who were scared to get into the water.

જ➶ What happens in the world around her is muted and distant. Her mind locked on her grief and sorrow only. To lose someone precious to her is not a feeling that she ever thought she would feel. Perhaps this is a punishment bestowed by Starclan. The warrior doesn't know but it feels like it. Her pain is raw and almost all consuming and she trembles as she stays close to the body. The only thing that manages to pull her back into the awareness is another body settling down beside her. Slowly her head lifts and she turns to look at the medicine cat. Her soft and gentle words piercing her heart. The vigil, having to bury them. Never see them again. It's so much and she feels tears coming once more. "M-Moonbeam...." The warrior struggles on her broken words and she attempts to not cry again but the medicine cat's understanding and caring words crack her facade even more.

She nods her head swiftly before finding her words as best that she can. "Ye-yes, I do. I want to h-help." She finally mutters out and she sets to copying the other. Licking the fur to help dry what was once her best friend.

Grief is heavy.

It sats in your chest and weighed your paws to the ground, not allowing you to move forward. Turtlepaw was unaware of the unimaginable size of it resting right where her heart used to be until she saw her mentor plod into camp with a familiar pelt between his teeth. It was an inky black pelt that usually made her chest feel light and giddy. Funny how that can change in an instant.

A low thin wail left her. It was a sound she didn't know she was capable of. Even when Smokestar died, she had only whimpered. This wail that felt inescapable dimmed as she forced herself forward to stare dumbly at the sight. Magpiepaw, her first real friend, was limp and cold and unbreathing and still and gone and dead-

It hits her like a wave. Dead. Final. Over. Every possibility she had ever considered with Magpiepaw floated downstream away from her. There was so much to do together. They were supposed to be warriors together. Just next moon they would have sat in their vigil together. Turtlepaw had even made the plan to make it laugh right before sunrise. She would miss its laugh.

She looked to Midnightash and Moonbeam then to Snakeblink for a reason, a fix. Something to make this better. Another wail left her, though this one was more like a whine. She mutely acknowledged Beefang with a glance. Turtlepaw's limbs felt too heavy and her mouth was dry. A choked "me too" is muttered and she crouches - more so collapses - next to Magpiepaw's body. Its scent was wrong, she noted as she breathed them in. Her tongue found their fur and she forced down a sob at the lack of response from her friend. A clearer image was coming to her mind now: a world without Magpiepaw.

[penned by muddly].

Foxtail lays outside of the warrior's den, sunlight glowing into his thick fur. He felt his eyes getting heavy, but before he could close them... Snakeblink trudges into camp, with Midnightash and Beefang following behind. Foxtail lifts his head from his paws, his olive green eyes widening at the sight of the limp form of Magpiepaw. He can feel his heart racing already.... what- what happened? "Magpiepaw is dead." His ears pin back to his skull as Beefang speaks with little to no emotion, and he finds himself padding over; any thoughts of resting has left his mind and body. "Snakeblink and Midnightash found him." His gaze lands onto the young warrior, his heart weeping as he watches her press her head against his limp body.

Moonbeam races her way over, and her gaze focuses on the two warriors that found his body.... but whatever words leave her maw is muffled... by his racing heart. Hawkcloud. Chills run down his spine, and his heart races faster. He remembers that fateful night; where it was just the two of them guarding camp. "I don't think they like me very much. .... They looked so angry." His sister's voice rings in his mind, her eyes looked so sorrowful that evening.... and it broke his heart to see her like that.

Foxtail takes a step back, tearing his gaze away from Hawkcloud's apprentice.... "I.... I-I need to find H-Hawkcloud." Foxtail manages to stammer out, his voice filled with despair.. to any that might be listening. Without another word, the lead warrior rushes out of RiverClan's camp.... and if anyone managed to catch his gaze, they would see dread in his olive green eyes.
