the wonder of a fairy tale

In the past moon many things had happened. Words of foxes on the borders had reached the camp with Twitchbolt choosing to step down from deputy soon after he came home injured because of the foxes, Daisypaw had snuck out of camp with his siblings before becoming an apprentice only to be greet with an adder, and the final nail in the coffin had been his father - broken and bloody Dandelionwish had been brought back to camp carried, dead from strangers along their borders of unknown origin - alongside Applefrost, a cat who the apprentice hadn't known much other than in passing, too preoccupied with being a kit then learning what he could as an apprentice. Everything had been building up, everything had been stacking and now it overflowed as he realized that he didn't want to leave camp; not now and not ever again.

The realization of his fear of things outside the safety of the home of SkyClan camp happened as he began walking towards the entrance, following quickly behind Figfeather before that daunting opening of the gorse tunnel caused him to slow to a stop. Spit and fear rose to his throat and he'd be quick to swallow it, silently willing his paws to simply move forward before they did the opposite. "I'm not-" Dry words spilled from his maw before he stopped and shook his head before staring forward, eyes wide before he simply sat down. "I'm not leaving the camp. I can't, I can't leave the camp." Was he allowed to say no to his mentor, to tell her that he wasn't leaving to go training or mark borders or whatever it was they were meant to do today? It didn't matter because he already had. Bad things happened outside of camp and Daisypaw didn't want more bad to happen.

Reactions: FIGFEATHER

The red tabby stops in her tracks. Turning her head to her shoulder she looks at Daisypaw who’s now sat on his tail, his paws planted in refusal to follow his mentor.

’I’m not leaving the camp. I can’t.’

Figfeather isn’t the most emotionally intelligent warrior in the forest, but even she possesses enough context clues to get this is likely due to the rough past couple of days. Butterflytuft’s mate had passed unexpectedly throwing the whole clan into a shock, his kits included. She’s tried to be patient with Daisypaw and give him some space to grieve, but the forest didn’t stop for anyone. They must continue their training if he was to stay on track, she wouldn’t allow him to fall behind so soon.

”Oh, Daisypaw…” She meows, her voice sympathetic and knowing. ”I know it hasn’t been an easy couple days, but what good is sitting in camp going to do? It’s time to continue your training.” She doesn’t take Daisypaw’s hesitance to leave as a fear, but more-so being heavily chained by grief. It was difficult to want to do much of anything when your heart weighed heavier than your paws.

”I wanted to take you hunting. You’ve been wanting to learn since I took you out of the camp for the first time, remember? We’ll go to the rockpile and I’ll teach you how to hunt mice. Wouldn’t you like that?” Figfeather tries, hoping that the idea of learning a new skill would entice the young tom enough.

Though he did not fear his mentor he had thought that instead of her softer voice of sympathy and understanding that she would snap back, that she would drag him by the scruff if need-be in order to get him to leave the safety of the camp, so when the words came towards him he had blinked in surprise. A heavy sigh left him, body shuddering with the weight of it before he shook his head, maw opening for just a moment before he'd look down to white-tipped paws. "Bad things keep happening outside of camp." He'd state, voice quiet as he did so before he'd let a small moment of silence grow between the two.

The idea of hunting was enticing, even if it was just a little. He had grown used to eating first within the nursery but now that he was an apprentice he couldn't eat until the majority of the clan had done so, and with him being unable to catch his own food it had made it harder to get used to this for the less food that was caught the less there was to eat and the longer patrols had to be, the longer training had to be. But still it didn't work, not at first anyway. "How do you keep going out there, keep leaving camp even though so much happens when you do? Orangestar lost a life because she left camp, Twitchbolt stepped down as deputy, Applefrost and Dandelionwish..." The rest of that statement was left unsaid, and Daisypaw swallowed the thick lump that had begun to form in his throat. He felt the corners of his eyes begin to feel heavy with the threat of tears and he willed them not to fall, not now.

Figfeather has to perk her ears to tune into Daisypaw's quiet voice. Her pelt twitches with discomfort, she knows right now Daisypaw needs a reassuring shoulder, but Figfeather has never been able to be that. Not for anyone. How was she going to handle this without making a brutish fool of herself? Seconds seem like awkward, quiet minutes as she tries to think of how to navigate Daisypaw's fears.

"...Because bad things happen everywhere. It's just something that happens." It sounds dismissive, but it is the bitter truth. She doesn't expect it to calm or comfort Daisypaw, but as his mentor she felt it was important he understood this. "I've seen bloodshed everywhere. At the ThunderClan border, inside the twoleg place, near the Tallpine, the Great Ravine, even here in camp." Figfeather can still hear the creaking of the pine as it fell on top of the nursery, how it had crushed Snowpath who had heroically pushed Butterflytuft out of harm's way. How green cough had consumed everyone, nest-rid the strongest warriors and slain them in their nests. Even if Daisypaw was too young to know it, a clan-cat was never truly safe, enemies of all kinds lurked in every shadow.

"Staying in camp won't protect you or anyone else. What will protect you is continuing your training and seeing the beauty that there is in the forest by learning to be brave." Her shoulders tense, fearing that she may just have upset Daisypaw even further. She wasn't cut out for talks like these, but she wanted nothing more than to see the blue apprentice succeed and conquered every hurdle obstructing his path. So for him, as his mentor, she would try. Taking in a deep breath, she tries to recall Tallulahwing's pep talks onto her.

He listened once more, ears pinned back the more Figfeather continued on. Nowhere was safe, the border, in twoleg place, even in camp there was no guarantee of safety and the image he'd had in his mind since he could think was shattered. Nothing had happened within camp walls while he had been a kitten - at least nothing he could recall anyway - to make him believe that the camp wasn't safe. Only things outside that gorse tunnel had brought pain and death and how his mentor - no, his kin - was telling him that that wasn't true.

She mentioned being brave, that in order to protect himself he needed to train and learn to be brave and a small sigh left him, ending in a slight whine of uncertainty before nodding his head carefully. He had to be brave if not for himself then for his mother who had been so brave with the adder, who was going to stay within the nursery instead of moving back into the warrior den to defend camp alongside the other warriors of the camp. "Do you think it's okay to not be brave sometimes?" It was said after moving up from his spot to near his mentor once more towards the entrance of the camp, eyes looking out towards the territory as the fur along his spine rose for a moment before he willed it flat once more.

Figfeather represses a sigh of relief as her apprentice rises to his. He moves to stand hesitantly along side her, his blue eyes searching into her orange. Did she think it was okay to not be brave sometimes?

Figfeather’s whiskers twitch, she can’t recall a moment in her life where she could afford not being brave. Her injury, the journey, any threats SkyClan continued to face. If she had hesitated during any of those situations, decided to allow herself to feel scared, she isn’t quite sure she’d stand here today.

She shakes her head, ”It’s a warrior’s job to be brave.”
