camp razor’s edge // important announcement

// this thread takes place PRIOR to the three warriors attacking the former kittypets.

The walk back to camp had been filled with chatter, murmured planning with Gentlestorm. How will this look? How can ThunderClan ensure safety if Gentlestorm is in RiverClan? Will they waste herbs on this training? It’s not a perfect system, but by the time they return to camp, she thinks it will work well enough. Howlingstar steps into ThunderClan's camp, her posture commanding attention immediately. Anyone can tell when she has something urgent to say. As she and her medicine cat cross the barrier’s threshold and into the heart of the camp, the eyes of their clanmates turn toward them.

The stout tabby climbs onto the Highrock and stands at its edge. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join here beneath the Highrock for a clan meeting," She begins, her gaze sweeping over her gathered warriors and apprentices, voice resonating with the authority she’s grown so accustomed to. "I have important news to share." Her tone softens slightly then, heavy with the weight of the recent discussion at the border. "Gentlestorm and I have met with Lichenstar and Moonbeam at the border. RiverClan’s medicine cat is new, undertrained with Ravensong gone, much like Gentlestorm had been when Berryheart passed.” A flicker of pain crosses her expression at the mention of her son before she dips her head slightly to continue. “In the spirit of peace and cooperation, Gentlestorm will be begin training Moonbeam. In exchange for his time, Lichenstar has promised that we will have peace over Sunningrocks - they will continue to not challenge us for our territory. It's a step toward mutual harmony between our clans."

She looks at Gentlestorm and nods to him. "Moonbeam will spend half of the time here in our camp. For the other half, Gentlestorm has agreed to visit RiverClan - so no clan will be without their medicine for any long periods. He will leave every other dawn and return at dusk that day." Her firm green gaze returns to her clan. "I expect all of you to respect Moonbeam as a guest and as a medicine cat. This arrangement will benefit both our clans, and it is our duty to uphold the spirit of this agreement. Never forget we have honor.”

“I know you all just have questions. Share with me your thoughts,”
She finally finishes, fully expecting some of her clanmates to take issue with the deal. She can’t blame them, exactly - she doesn’t like parts of it, either. But she fully believes this will end up benefitting them. It is an act of diplomacy, of peace, and they won’t have to worry about Sunningrocks anymore.

. ° ✦ Bravepaw gathered quickly at the matriarch's call, curious to what needed the Clans attention between the usual meetings. He glanced around to see the faces of his fellow Clanmates, read from the expressions on any of her gathered council, but it doesn't give him any insight.

But Howlingstar does not leave him wanting for long. His ears perk at the mention of his uncle, searching for the tom by the mouth of the medicine den. So they would be sharing the kindness SkyClan had shown ThunderClan? It was an honorable quest to train another Clan's medicine cat, but- "He doesn't have an apprentice to stay behind..." Bravepaw finished his thought aloud.

"She isn't fully trained, but she has her medicine cat name?" He murmured to the cat beside him, growing more and more curious about the situation. If StarClan had deemed her fully prepared, what else could Gentlestorm teach her?

"Will we be traveling to RiverClan for injuries on days neither of them are here?" Bravepaw asked before hurriedly dipping his head in a show of respect, that his outburst was not of defiance to her decree but of innocent means to understand.

𓍊𓋼 The cream tabby comes striding over at his leader’s call, curiosity lighting in dual-colored eyes. What’s this? Not another meeting, surely—usually Howlingstar announces meetings with more formality, and with less urgency. The announcement that she does give is important, it seems, as she tells the clan that their only healer will be traveling to RiverClan every other day. If RiverClan’s medicine cat isn’t fully trained, then why does she have her full name? Falconheart frowns, tail flickering. "Doesn’t that mean we’re in more danger when he’s gone?" He asks, a hint of nervousness slipping its way into his voice. But it fades away quickly with Howlingstar’s reassurances. This is the right thing to do, helping their neighbors when necessary. He does share the same concern as Bravepaw—what are they going to do if someone gets hurt while Gentlestorm is gone?

He awaits the leader’s response, eyes wide with concern. This seems like a nice thing for ThunderClan to do, but what have their neighbors done for them in return? Lichenstar won’t challenge them for Sunningrocks—but she hasn’t done it at all before. And without a fully trained medicine cat, RiverClan doesn’t stand a chance in a drawn-out fight between their clans. Howlingstar is practically handing RiverClan the ability to fight for Sunningrocks, and hampering ThunderClan’s health in the process. "But if you’re sure it’s a good idea, then… I trust you."

⋆˖⁺‧₊☽◯☾₊‧⁺˖⋆ nightbird listens from the mouth of the nursery, tongue raking her muzzle in distaste. why must they be the ones to house a riverclanner, offer charity of which they were undeserving. her ears twitch with unease. why not skyclan? the clan that had a medicine cat to spare, the clan that they had sought out to talk to the gathering before last after it was brought to violence.

riverclan's lack of a full trained medicine cat was not thunderclan's problem, the queen knew that much. they had no qualms leaving an injured stormfeather behind in the mountains, but now showed face to beg for training. nightbird would have killed to have an ear in that conversation.

she looks to bravepaw, to falconheart, as they both utter their concerns. nodding along subtly, jaw tightening. thunderclan would be helpless on the days gentlestorm went across the river. if someone were to get injured... her gaze momentarily flicks to her kits playing in the nursery. if anything happened to them while he was gone, she was not sure if her wrath could be curbed. all for peace regarding sunningrocks, a chunk of territory riverclan hadn't made a grab for in moons.

nightbird would not repeat the already asked questions, but waited intently for their answers with a slow tapping tail.

Howlingstar's gaze shifts to Bravepaw first, her green eyes softening slightly in acknowledgment of his youthful concern. "You must remember, when Ravensong disappeared she had to step up to become a full medicine cat, much like our own had to do when Berryheart left us. She is one in title and in name, but that does not mean she has all of the essential skills needed for a medicine cat. Gentlestorm's guidance will ensure she gains that knowledge.” She thinks about his next question, her brow creasing. Her gaze then turns to Falconheart, her expression remaining thoughtful as she considers both of their concerns. "I understand your worry about being vulnerable…what if we make a plan with RiverClan to have a patrol always on standby at the border when Gentlestorm is there? If we need him, they can retrieve him. And we can do the same for them. Perhaps we can also have Gentlestorm teach us basic knowledge so we can keep things under control until he can get here.” She knows this arrangement requires faith, but she wants them all to remember that their aim is to strengthen ties with RiverClan. By ensuring their medicine cat is trained, they’re fostering goodwill that will benefit them in the long run. Lichenstar's promise of peace over Sunningrocks is a sign of her willingness to cooperate, after all. This gesture may very well help in maintaining stability between the two clans.

Finally, she meets Nightbird's critical gaze with a steady, resolute stare, before scanning the rest of the faces staring up at her. "I know this arrangement may seem burdensome and perhaps unfair. However, peace is often achieved through acts of diplomacy, even when they come with personal costs. We are upholding our honor and our commitment to the greater good by not leaving fellow cats without a trained healer." The tabby’s voice carries a note of conviction as she hopes to quell the doubts among her clanmates, even if she can clearly understand and even agree with their concerns. But they have to try this, she’s sure of it. Berryheart’s prophecy echoes in her brain like a howl, and that memory makes her stand even more resolutely in her decision. It’s their job to help the other clans, and she will not fail in their star-given mission.

The news that Howlingstar pulls the Clan together for isn't good news, in Softpaw's opinion. Gentlestorm, leaving them on and off to train RiverClan's medicine cat? It left ThunderClan vulnerable, when there were so many threats out in the forest to be had, as others pointed out. Part of Softpaw felt the same as she had when Gentlestorm had run off to help RiverClan before without notice - his heart was in the right place, but he was too quickly forgetting his own Clan.

"Perhaps Gentlestorm should consider taking on an apprentice sooner rather than later, now," Softpaw mused aloud in response to Bravepaw's first words. "Couldn't he train a proper ThunderClan medicine cat alongside Moonbeam? For the time where he's in ThunderClan camp, at least." She didn't want to further put pressure on Gentlestorm by asking him to choose an apprentice now of all times, but she didn't doubt that the medicine cat having an apprentice would bring ease to some of their Clanmates.

. ° ✦ Bravepaw nodded slowly to the answers provided, for both himself and Falconheart. It provided some reassurance, what little words could give for the situation at hand, but as long as if proved successful in execution he may come to feel more secure with it.

Blue eyes switched to the cream tabby, the finality in his feelings shared with a firm nod. Yes, if Howlingstar truly believed this was for the best for their Clan, then he trusted her choice. She had not led them astray before, for as long as he was alive to tell at least, they had to have faith this was only right.

"I think a patrol would work, stationed on our side of the river. And... basic knowledge wouldn't hurt to know, given how most our injuries happen on patrol." Bravepaw took a large breath like a rock had settled between his shoulders and leaned back, trying to correct his posture to sit tall, biting the inside of his cheek when Softpaw spoke. It sounded more sensical for Gentlestorm to get his own personal benefit in this too, but he would not say as much out loud. That was for his uncle to decide.

There is a sense of unease at Howlingstars words - thunderclan will be without a medicine cat, every other day. Though, she thinks as she shifts from paw to paw, they'll now have double the paws on others, won't they? Head bobs for a moment as she focuses pale blue eyes upon her leader, takes in the set of her shoulders and certainty of her gaze. Whatever anyone says, she does not think Howlingstar is going to change her mind - and Glowingpaw is certainly not going to be the one to put herself out there. Instead, she just nods in acceptance, ears drawn back timidly - there's no use worrying over things she cannot change.

The second the announcement leaves his grandmother's maw he thinks This is a bad idea. Too many things could go wrong and a myriad of possibilities play out in his head. It seems others have the same idea, as there are voices that raise from the crowd to question, to voice concern. He tries to think, if he were in Howlingstar's paws, would he do the same? No. If RiverClan wanted Sunningrocks back, if they even cared for that scrap of territory they had not been willing to defend from the dogs, then they would have surely tried to take it back by now. They were doing just fine without it, and he has no doubt in ThunderClan's ability to keep it if it came down to a test of tooth and claw. Just let them try.. he thinks.

Howlingstar offers reassurances, and Burnstorm does not speak up to question her decision, but he does look towards Nightburd to gauge her reaction. He gleams nothing from her stony features and as a result he tries his best to draw his own into similar neutrality, curling his fluffy tail around his paws and pretending to be more interested in his claws than the discussion at hand. Howlingstar was a good cat, an honorable one, and he liked to believe he was as well but.. What did it say about him when he would have preferred to leave their long-time enemies with a less skilled healer? What if that was what was deterring them from raising their claws against them? The fear of infection, of injuries that could not be healed without knowledgeable paws. Stars protect us he thinks.

There are no ceremonies today, which leaves Bugs a little confused, but by the end of the meeting, she isn't alone in that emotion. She glances around, listening to the murmured concerns of her clanmates. She remembers in her kithood that Morning...Dawn...Dawnglare guy spending time here, too, so she wasn't unfamiliar with the concept of medicine-cat sharing. It felt full circle to have Gentlestorm, then, help take care of another medicine cat! Moonbeam, Howlingstar had called her. What a pretty name, Bugpaw thinks with sparkling eyes.
"I think it's a great idea" Bugpaw offers, a lick of positivity not meant to trivialize others' spoken concerns, "it'd be lunatic not to share some of our generosity after Dawnglare's visit," she grins cheekily at her brother, "I'm over-the-moon to meet her! Is Moonbeam visiting us first?" Man, she wished she could go visit Riverclan herself. She wondered if it was fun on the other side of the border.

Palefire wandered over alongside her clanmates as Gentlestorm and Howlingstar returned to camp, smelling faintly of Riverclan, and demanding their attention. She settled herself nearby Nightbird, casting a sidelong glance at her former mentor before her gaze turned to their leader for her announcement. Gentlestorm would apparently be spending much of his time from now on in… Riverclan. Riverclan, of all places, training their medicine cat. She sighed quietly under her breath, ears twitching, but she managed to keep her jaw firmly shut while the rest of her peers voiced their concerns. She steadfastly agreed with all of them; it really wasn’t their problem, and Riverclan had never given them much of a reason to act ‘neighborly’.

But she did also understand that if Dawnglare had not been as kind to them, they wouldn’t have a fully trained medicine cat themselves right now. Her tail flickered subtly at her paws when Softpaw suggested he take on a new apprentice for himself, and she couldn’t help now but to nod along in agreement. “That sounds like a better way for us to be prepared. If Gentlestorm took on an apprentice and began training them now, at least we’d have one of them to come back to us or stick around in case of an emergency.” She didn’t want to fully protest this plan of theirs, she trusted Howlingstar’s judgement, but it did seem like they were taking an unnecessary risk in sending their only healer away.
