sensitive topics REIGN IN BLOOD ⁺˖⋆ prompt

⋆˖⁺‧₊☽◯☾₊‧⁺˖⋆ (cw: prey death/mentions of blood)

she hated the way blood looked when it was etched into the stark white snow. the way that it painted something so clean a nauseating maroon, how it's warmth melted trails that yearned to touch grass. it didn't matter where it came from, cat or prey, it looked the same against the soft white surface. the ichor draining from her most recent kill appeared no different than morningpaw or little wolf's as they met similar fates.

nightbird aimed for the cleanest kill possible, more-so in leafbare. but this, it was far from it. the little robin was stubborn, flitting off even after her claws scored frantic wings. she made chase up the slippery tree it sought refuge in, too far to land a bite. the best she could do was send it downwards with a powerful strike, still it fought her. writhing as it tried to flip from it's back, the bird struggled until she could descend and end their feud. the snow was already coated in crimson by the time she did.

the warrior took her time to move the prey off of the ground, placed it gently between the branches of a bare bush. nightbird returned to the stained snow, pawsteps approached but they didn't quite make it to her ears as she took a white paw through snow untouched, shoveling it over the sodden area.

He'd reluctantly agreed to tag along that morning, finding himself feeling slightly guilty about having a day off recently. He would never admit it, but he did agree with the warriors mentioning that they needed to repay the debt from having a day off. He was ready to catch a mouse himself when suddenly it darted away before his claws could close around it. A frustrated hiss would escape his jaws as he watched it scurry away. It seemed as if he wasn't the only feline struggling, as Nightbird's own struggle caught his attention. "The blood bothers you?" He mused, watching the warrior go to an extra length to hide the red-stained snow from sight. Blood had never personally bothered him, nor had he stopped to think that others may have an issue with it themselves. Regardless of the matter, Smudgepaw was in rare form that day and was doing a considerably better job of holding his tongue from making a sharp remark.

⋆˖⁺‧₊☽◯☾₊‧⁺˖⋆ her spine prickles as she feels eyes trained on her, her paw shoveling white snow to cover the red. as if caught doing something she shouldn't, immediately nightbird feels defensive, backed into a corner. this wasn't wrong, but as soon as smudgepaw voices it, it feels just that.

a seasoned combatant, nightbird had shed and seen more than she remembered. it shouldn't bother her, it does. she shouldn't waste her time covering its trace when there is prey to be hunted, but she cannot stop until all that remains is the stark whiteness of the snow. only then does she turn to face smudgepaw, he was only an apprentice. she did not have to explain herself.

"it's really none of your business." a childish rebuttal, but she doesn't feel the urge to choke up something as underwhelming as a half-hearted explanation. it didn't matter anyways, smudgepaw was nothing more than a nosy apprentice. "if you were as worried about finding a piece of prey as you are what i'm doing, you would have caught something by now."

When he looks at the blood-soaked snow he thinks of much of the same things that Nightbird does. He imagines its Morningpaw's body that lays there, crumpled and broken, her vacant eyes staring up at a sky she'll never get to see again. And then it is his mothers body, or what he imagines anyways. He had not been there when she had died, something he regrets every single day. If he had been there perhaps he would have been enough, perhaps he could have saved her...

Thinking about the dead, about what if's, was not going to bring them back though. All he could do was keep moving forward, his chin and his tail held high. The future held promise, it held potential, and stars knew there was no way he would squander it. He had let too much of life go to waste while he had been caught up in his own grief and loathing. No more.

But he understands. He knows why Nightbird covers the bloodied snow, why she snaps at Smudgepaw to mind his business and he does not judge. He would look at the spot where crimson had stained the ground for a long moment, his eyes soft, before he would turn to Smudgepaw, then to his own apprentice. "We are wasting daylight. Come on." he says with a slight huff, but before he pads off he turns to Nightbird, a knowing look in his eyes.

-ˋˏ ༻☽༺ ˎˊ- The blood-soaked snow left after Nightbird's messy kill sent a shiver down Badgerpaw's spine. She eyed it warily, before sharing a glance with Smudgepaw - unlike her friend, she understood the desire to cover it. Though Badgerpaw had no taste of death or bloodshed, she was quite sheltered from such - she had no intentions of viewing it now. She would have covered it too.

That being said, she makes no comment at Nightbird's retort towards Smudgepaw, and trails after her mentor without another glance towards Nightbird. Unusually quiet today, but the scene certainly made her nervous, and she was more than happy to move on as Burnstorm commanded.
