SHADOWCLAN DEPUTY
INTEREST CHECK

Welcome! Once again, Shadowclan finds themselves in need of a deputy! After a heart to heart with the newly named Ternstar, Mapletuft remains in her previous position of deputy - but not for long. With an understanding that Mapletuft is not ready to face the realities of leadership should Ternstar too fall, Tern turns her gaze elsewhere.

Applications will close on December 15th, with the official decision expected within a week after.

Currently, applications are only open for a short-term deputy! Please make sure to keep this in mind, but have fun applying.

  • — All site & discord rules still apply.
    — Before applying, please make sure to familiarize yourself with the Rank Guide & Leadership Guide. You will be expected to follow all rules and expectations laid out there.
    — You cannot apply if you already have a cat on the leadership track - this means an actively played deputy or leader in any official clan.
    — This interest check is for a short-term deputy. While this will not be a full term position, please expect to fill the spot for at least a month or longer. While life happens, please be sure you are willing to commit to seeing this through for as long as possible!
    — The circumstances under which y/c steps down are up to you! There is an option for danger should you be interested, but otherwise feel free to give ideas you may have.
    — The deputy applicant that is chosen will have the chance to remain on as the long-term deputy following this plot, given that all IC and OOC responsibilities are completed successfully.
    — I will only be looking at activity prior to this check. I will take into account as many factors as possible though, so don't fret that November alone might get you disqualified!
  • — Following the warrior code, characters must be a warrior and have trained at least one apprentice to qualify.
    — Ternstar will not enforce a minimum age requirement, however cats under 30 moons will likely be preferred. Not only is Ternstar admittedly biased against those older then her, she is of the opinion that only a cat raised in shadowclan - not the marshes, or the colony, or anywhere else - will truly stay loyal should the worst happen to her.
    — Following her nine lives ceremony, Ternstar will be looking for a cat that compliments and contradicts her skills and flaws. Some traits she may look for are kindness, diplomacy, peace keeping, and generally good-natured personalities.
  • — Someone who is active both on-site and in the Discord is a must! Shadowclan is more casual paced then some clans, but activity is still a priority. Being friendly, approachable and dependable are also essential for this kind of position. You will be expected to help run things after all, possibly even for the long haul!
    — By applying, you will be expected to maintain the site quota of 15 posts per month.

Name: SHARPSHADOW

Why are you interested in this position? I have a lot of love for ShadowClan! Sharpshadow and I have been here for a long while at this point, and I'm on record numerous times saying that ShadowClan has one of my favorite, if not absolute favorite IC circumstances/history of any of the Clans. They have roots lain in the forest far beyond that of any of the other Clans' and debatably more layers of tragedy on top of that than any other Clan... For me that is SUPER fun to keep infinitely building upon, especially playing my war child Sharpshadow who's basically absorbed infinite amounts of stress from these circumstances. The very core of her character is very much baked into all of ShadowClan's played history so far and I think it would be such a cool full-circle moment for her to end up in this kind of position! Essentially: both I and Sharpshadow (consciously and unconsciously at the same time) are VERY invested in ShadowClan's history and would love to continue contributing to it in this way :)

Why would y/c make a good fit? Sharpshadow is an often visibly anxious character that — no sugarcoating this, would probably look like a strange pick to at least a few people. He's often not great at talking to people, he can be easy to annoy, and he makes a lot of jokes at the expense of ShadowClan; but in many cases, his actions speak louder than words. He is undeniably loyal to his Clan, and a staple of his character is his fierce desire to see it improve. Despite more or less believing there's little he can do to contribute to this, he puts the whole of his being into doing what he can for ShadowClan regardless. The breaking of rules put in place for others' safety makes him extremely irate. Though he can often be anxious and unsure, when it comes to his Clanmate's perceived safety he is vehement. Sharpshadow excels at taking action when it is pertinent, often being a first responder in stressful situations as well as being quick to draw his claws in times of danger.

As far as Tern's specific wants go... Not going to lie: On the surface, Sharpshadow probably wouldn't seem to meet her personal desires... very much at all HAHAHA. BUT! I will say that Sharpshadow certainly makes an effort to be kind to her Clanmates. She does this both inwardly, making some attempt to check herself when making not-so-kind assumptions about others, and outwardly pausing to consider the feelings of certain cats when speaking to them. Even if she sometimes lacks the social skill to give the best of advice, she does go out of her way to seek out, and make herself seem open to cats that she thinks need it ( Namely: her apprentices, Gigglepaw, Flintwish ) Sharpshadow... ahem... feels less of a need to do this for certain others, however, if Tern ICly made her desire for kindness known, Sharpshadow would make an effort to fulfill her wishes.

Sharpshadow is capable of keeping her mouth shut when the situation demands it. Though his tongue may loosen in issues of high importance to him, it's quite likely that he would do better to watch what he says (potentially even to a neurotic degree...) in the position of deputy.

He is not Tern's biggest fan and has not really made much of an effort to hide this. To address this, I will note that Sharpshadow has hard beliefs in a very rigid Clan hierarchy instilled in him by his first mentor. He believes that kits should listen to their seniors; that apprentices should never talk back to their superiors, and so on. Though Sharpshadow has absolutely made jokes at the expense of and made faces at former Deputies and Leaders both, she has never disobeyed either, and this would not change beneath Ternstar.

Any stints in Sharpshadow's activity have mostly been sitewide inactivity on my part, and not at all due to me growing tired of his character. He is a tonnnnn of fun for me to write and has fun stuff coming up regardless of if he is deputy or not :3 So whether he's allowed something long-term or short-term, I'm confident that I could fulfill the role for however long is needed, and whether either or neither happens, ShadowClan may never be free from me...

Based on the updated guide, as well as some notes on Tern's Leadership dropped in the discord... I smell that she and Sharp would butt heads on some issues, and agree quite fiercely on others! Since Sharp and Tern are both quite old characters that absolutely share many of ShadowClan's traumas, I think it would be so very fun and silly to explore which issues they agree on and which ones they do not... ( Waves in Sharp fucks w the death penalty ) He would also very fiercely enforce Tern's rules regarding who can and cannot leave camp.... [REDACTED] mentioned elsewhere on the other hand will make her tweak <3

Imagine ur deputy's loner-born kits show up at the border one day. ermm awkward

Sharp may or may not have like a billion complexes surrounding Smogstar as well as the (frankly, at this point dangerous seeming) position of ShadowClan leader. I honestly cant say how this would manifest exactly unless it happened but im sure he would be extremely normal abt tern (and potentially him) being next in line to vanish into thin air.

Also! Sharp literally turns 30 in four days HEHEHE

Are you interested in the possibility of holding the position long-term?: Yes

Why are you interested in this position?: I am arguably the most active in Shadowclan both ICly and OOCly and I would also say it's currently the one I favor the most out of all the options on site! I currently play Amberhaze alone without any plans to introduce new characters into Shadowclan alongside him within the foreseeable future, meaning that as of now he is at the forefront of any posts that I have been writing. He is my most actively played character as it stands and is my main priority, meaning that there would be little issues in the way of him being played frequently and consistently. Beyond this, I adore the variety of characters seen in this clan, all of which are extremely unique in their own right and have been extremely fun to explore ICly alongside Amberhaze, making for valuable connections between myself and others as well as our characters which can be used to strengthen those important character based relationships that a deputy would need in order to uphold the status as a trusted authority figure. The extensive less than ideal lore behind the clan is one that I am quite enamored with, especially the concept of this inexplicable curse placed upon them by unexplainable and unfair reasons that seems to be believed by many, Amberhaze included. I am consistently creating new scenarios, plots and ideas in my head, some of which I do and do not disclose, however I always hope to put these personal plots to good use should it be allowed and should it make sense within the clan's current setting ICly. I would love to have the opportunity to perhaps share these ideas clanwide and make something that could be enjoyed by everyone as a collective whether it be by means of clanwide events or simply interpersonal between Amberhaze and those he surrounds himself with which would impact not only them but those around them by extension, both in negative and positive ways. I have always been excited to contribute to the clan in whatever way that I can and so far I have been greatly enjoying interacting with everyone in the server and on site, however if there was ever a chance for me to be able to take the extra steps towards something beyond just casualties and dive into something that requires a bit more responsibility I would be very glad to have the opportunity!

Why would y/c make a good fit?: I believe that despite Amberhaze's crippling anxieties and paranoid nature, he would do surprisingly well in a leading position! Although it could be considered generally unhealthy to contemplate and expect the worst outcome of anything at all times, it could also be seen as an asset when navigated properly. Amberhaze is very innovative and thinks outside what would be considered the norm when it comes to problem solving, oftentimes having a set plan in motion for events that may or may not end up becoming a genuine issue in the foreseeable future. He prioritizes anything that would see him and his clan through the harshest of circumstances, and will oftentimes go above and beyond to ensure that they do not fall short of what is needed to keep them all alive- for example, things such as herbs, food, nesting materials, and the like.

As far as more formal duties go, he would definitely prioritize things such as border checks, regular patrols around the territory, hunting, and despite his own shortcomings in combat, routine group training sessions as to ensure that the clan is as safe as it can be as well as keeping their claws and minds sharp enough to fend off any potential threats looming over them. Due to Ternstar's new implementation of allowing outsiders into the clan under specific circumstances, Amberhaze would want to ensure that this kindness does not turn into something others intend to abuse nor would he want to unintentionally invite trouble on to their loosened borders. He would believe that a strict schedule of routine border checks and marking renewals are of the utmost importance at this time while also ensuring that those who do not pose any genuine threat have a fair chance at being welcomed into the clan.

From a social standpoint, it's no secret that Amberhaze isn't the most skilled when it comes to interacting with others, however this doesn't mean he's entirely incapable of it. Putting his nervous stutter and voice cracks aside, he is actually quite the diplomat, oftentimes preferring to take more peaceful routes when it comes to dissolving conflict. He's a great listener and values the consideration of issues from multiple angles, allowing for every side to speak their peace before coming to a definitive decision himself. He is a pacifist and things such as violence and war would be the very last resort in any high stakes situation, and would do everything in his power to prevent devastation from occurring during moments of high tension as the risk of such a thing could mean a horrible outcome for his clan. Of course, he is also aware that sometimes the only option for peace begins with hardship, and in the case where he is unable to settle disputes between themselves and others with words, he will have little issue with unsheathing his claws. Extremely protective of what he cares for- namely Shadowclan and its resources- he would never turn down an invitation to fight for what he believes is worth preserving despite his inherent fear of conflict. Although he is not the best in the realm of physical combat, he is still capable of fending off enemies efficiently should it be required of him, oftentimes his motivations for doing so coming from outward sources such as the struggle of those close to him and his instinctual desire to protect them.

Personality wise, Amberhaze may very well be Ternstar's polar opposite. He is timid, gentle, shy, considerate, and friendly towards others. Although he has trouble reading the expressions of others at times and unintentionally misreading a room, he is not one to openly spread judgement or malice towards anyone for any reason unless they provide a reason to do otherwise. He is highly opinionated, however he will typically keep them to himself and share them with those who he deems to be the most trustworthy or those he has a more tight knit personal bond with. Generally, he gets along just fine with his clanmates and treats outsiders similarly, but this does not mean he is not cautious when times call for it. He does not run his mouth nor directly participates in idle gossip and knows when secrets should remain hidden for the good of his clan or himself, meaning that he is quite reliable with sensitive information. Amberhaze is a hard worker, oftentimes being one of the first to volunteer for anything that needs to be done at any point in time, and is always eager to assist others with whatever it is they may need. Very openly skittish and easy to scare, it can be difficult for those around him to break past that initial barrier, however if they do, they will find a very committed cat beneath the surface who only ever wants to be in the good graces of others. He is a bit of a pushover, but not to the extent that he would allow himself to be completely walked over- he hates to feel as though he is not in control of himself, at the very least- and he can recognize when its time for him to put his foot down and stand firmly beside himself and what he wants or doesn't want.

Extra/Trivia info:
— Unfortunately, Amberhaze's paranoid and delusional nature would remain present despite his potential promotion. He has always been a firm believer of the "Shadowclan curse" and is very susceptible to things pertaining to conspiracies or omens whether or not they have appropriate means of proof to back it up. Paired with Ternstar's own deluded beliefs of things that make little to no sense, things might get a little crazy!

— Amberhaze would be in support of the new death penalty implementation should the crime be serious enough to warrant it. He does not enjoy killing himself, however in his eyes the eradication of any kind of danger by means of violence ensures that they will be forever safe from that particular threat. Safety is something he seeks out obsessively and endlessly, and the extermination of something that could harm him or his clanmates would do well to ease his mind.

— He is quite the Ternstar supporter, believing her to be a promising leader given her headstrong and dedicated nature, however there are certain things that she has implemented which he does not particularly agree with. Namely, the opening of borders to those who are considered to be "in need." Although Amberhaze holds little to no resentment to outsiders or those looking to join Shadowclan's ranks, his immediate thought towards anything new or unfamiliar is that it could be dangerous. Not everything is as it seems, and to him, just because one seems vulnerable does not necessarily mean they are...looks are deceiving, after all. He would not directly argue with Ternstar about this decision, however it would be apparent in the way he obsessively patrols the borders upon it first being implemented that it has him rattled. With time, this fear about this particular matter will ease, however it will always be present in the back of his mind and he would always navigate situations involving newcomers with immense caution.

— Generally, Amberhaze would be of the belief that Ternstar knows more than him when it comes to what would and wouldn't be best for the clan and himself. This is due to his low self confidence and self esteem, and although he would do well to take charge on his own in Ternstar's absence and maintain the duties required of him, when she is around to handle things herself he will more often than not be floating somewhere at her side and allowing her to be the forefront of the clan's decision making. If she encourages him to be more outspoken about his opinions and should she ask for his input on general and important matters, he would provide his own input, but not before. This could be something he works past however, given Ternstar asks or encourages him to speak his mind when he sees fit if it means the potential betterment of the clan...or if she simply wants to hear from him.

— Not the most eloquently spoken in the clan by any means, Amberhaze can sometimes be a bit of a chore to speak with. He is prone to fumbling over his words, oftentimes speaking with a stutter, breaking apart his sentences, or trailing off entirely. This will be present even during more heated or important situations, as it is something he could never truly break the habit of. He is very physically expressive, oftentimes wearing his perpetual stress upon his face in the form of a grimace, and his anxieties plainly set in the way he seems to be constantly twitching. This may cause him to be a bit of a distraction at times, and could even be seen as a liability or sign of weakness when faced with the scrutiny of other clans. Of course, his own clan and Ternstar are aware of his capabilities, however if you're looking to intimidate it may be best to leave him to watch over camp!

— Amberhaze thrives on positive reinforcement and will oftentimes push himself towards doing something difficult by his standards so long as he is receiving the appropriate amount of encouragement for it. If he is told one has confidence in him, chances are it would be enough to get him to suck up his fear and take the plunge into new territories. Typically, once he braves something that he is unfamiliar with, he will have a much easier time doing it again in the future until that too becomes something that he is fully capable of carrying out. It is, of course, not a requirement and he is entirely capable of hyping himself up when need be, but the effects are much more immediate should they come from outward sources. (This is because he doesn't always trust his own judgement.)

Are you interested in the possibility of holding the position long-term?: Yes

Other: If I happen to be picked for the position I must ask for your patience as I learn! I have never been an HP before so this would all be completely new to me but I would be so happy to learn and to share the experience with everyone else on the team. <3 There's also a chance I may come back to edit this should I think of anything new to add, I've just been working on it for a day or so by now so I'm a bit tapped out.

Why are you interested in this position?:
As someone who's been active with Fern for a very long time now, I've come to learn a lot about ShadowClan and see myself with plenty of visions for how it could be in the future! I think it would bring me a lot of development opportunities for Fern that otherwise lack impact if she were to remain a warrior. Plus, I have a lot of love for ShadowClan and want to do everything in my power to see it become a thriving little community :-)

On Tabbytales, I've had two Lead Warrior positions so I know what the expectations are regarding High Positions. Though the Deputy position would be new for me, I'm pretty adaptable and can deal with change and new challenges well enough for me to be confident saying that I can handle it. Aside from a brief stint last year, I have been consistently active during my 2 years of Tabbytales, with Ferndance reaching more than 15 posts a month on many occasions and myself trying to remain active in ShadowClan's discord as best as I can. I pretty much don't leave the plotting channel alone whenever I'm free and try to engage with people in character channels whenever I have the social energy for it.

Why would y/c make a good fit?:
Ferndance is a long-term character in ShadowClan, having been around since the first week of its creation in-character and almost two years out-of-character. She has had two apprentices reach warriorhood (Wormwatcher and Laurelgrin) and an extra two she has helped train in some capacity before an incident (Wolfpaw and Honeymoon) which aligns with the expectations of the newest warrior code! As a character, her skillset mainly revolves around hunting and tracking. Within fights, she pretty much always goes for the kill due to a more druidic mindset that believes that, within destruction, comes rebirth. It has helped her remain fairly upbeat in a moody clan.

Ferndance has previous knowledge of being a Lead Warrior and, when she is available, she is often chosen to lead patrols which suggests some level of authority in the group (or at least, trust to get things done). She will do what she needs to do and, after becoming a mother and finding her place within ShadowClan, will be much more sensible giving out orders and ideas than she has been previously. However, she is still likely to retain that lighthearted whimsy that makes Fern Fern: patrols will go out, but some of them may have some interesting stipulations!

As stated in previous applications she's fiercely protective of the clan's youth after becoming a mother herself. She would be pretty adamant and consistent about keeping up safeguarding measures in place to protect apprentices and young ones from the seemingly inevitable harm that comes with being a ShadowClanner. Under Ternstar, she is likely to suggest bold ideas and actions and would have little qualms with adding her voice to the decision-making process like before. She is, after all, a very confident cat. Perhaps too confident. It's not a position she'd be shocked or humble about accepting even if she didn't show any outright ambition for it.

With Needledrift's death on her mind, if she were chosen for Deputy at this point in time, she would likely act as an aggressor towards other clans and advocate for the harshest solution to outerclan conflicts such as prey disputes. She is *very* likely to cause fights with ThunderClan and doesn't seem particularly happy with peace until she's killed the cat that killed her loved one. Whether this becomes a factor for short-term Deputyship as she isn't in the right state of mind for it, because of it is not what Tern anticipated her to be or she does something that puts the clan at risk, I'm down to explore either!

And finally, as one of Tern's friends and in-laws, I feel like there could be some silly goofy biases to explore. If Fern does end up being a perma-short term, then it could provide Tern with the growth to consider looking for options outside of her circle.
Are you interested in the possibility of holding the position long-term?: Yes! I do think Fern's character growth would benefit from a more Long Term position (or a short-term, a step-down and then a long-term) but wanted to put my interest in regardless since I can be flexible <33
Other: This is a little more copy/pasted than I wanted it to be sorry but I didn't have time for anything chunkier before the deadline </3. Good luck to everyone that's applied!
