Bluekit's relationship with Sootstar is not equivocal to any other Clan kits' with their mothers. Sootstar is the WindClan leader -- she had no time to nurse five kits when she had affairs to run. Bluekit's earliest memories are not of her mother, but of a nursing queen and the pressure of her siblings nursing alongside her. When she has those distant milk dreams still, Bluekit does not yearn for Sootstar's scent or the softness of her body, but of a faceless queen she does not share blood with.
It's not maternal love Bluekit wants from Sootstar, though. She wants her mother to look at her and be impressed by what she sees. She wants to become her mother, wants WindClan and all of the other forest cats to look upon her with reverence. She wants to walk with StarClan. She wants to be important. Bluekit spends an unorthodox amount of time observing Sootstar when her more rambunctious siblings are playing or fighting. She studies the way her mother carries herself. She attempts to emulate her words, down to the inflections.
Since Juniperfrost has died, though, Bluekit has felt Sootstar's absence. Normally, her mother is out and about in camp. Everything that happens in WindClan is her business, and she has never discouraged Bluekit or any other interested littermate from following her about camp. Bluekit hasn't been able to do this, though -- Sootstar has not left her den. She's seen her father go in, but he exited with a puzzled and disheartened expression. She's never known her mother to keep to herself so much.
Hesitantly, Bluekit hovers at the entrance of Sootstar's den. Her mother's scent tempts her to enter without permission, but she was raised better than to intrude. The tiny she-kit clears her throat and mews into the crack, "Sootstar?" The childish, girlish voice trails off. "Mother? Can I come in? I..." I miss you, but that's not quite right, is it? She doesn't know how to say what she's feeling. She doesn't have the words for it.
Instead, she waits for Sootstar to respond to her, wrapping the fluff of her tail about her paws.
