He rests upon the edge of the rippling pool, where countless gleaming fish scales shimmered at the bottom. Beepaw had showed him this place, a precious revelation that Nettlepaw had chosen to cling to. The other apprentice may not have meant it this way, but when Nettlepaw looked into the water, each scale represented a star. A memory. A loved one, lost. One of those scales, glistening beneath the ripples of the pool's surface, was his mother. An offering he had presented, because the fish scales often shimmered like stars.

The morning was cold, but the chill of leaf-bare did not push the tom away from his solitude, where he sat in brooding silence, buffeted by wintry winds. He wonders if Reedflower is up there, watching him.

She had been... suffocating, at times. Pricklepaw still defended her fervently despite her flaws, but Nettlepaw had still loved her despite them. All the times he had struggled out of her grasp, determined to bathe himself. Determined to be independent, despite his blindness. Now, he can't help but miss the closeness. The hovering. The doting. Shadestone was distant. He seemed entirely uninterested in his sons, too busy patrolling, or hunting. Though it was the normal life of a warrior that his father followed, Nettlepaw can't help but feel bitter about the lack of love and attention. He felt like he had no one else to turn to, not even his own siblings.

A sigh presses past his maw as the apprentice stirs the surface of the pool with a paw. It's a soothing motion, and he almost doesn't notice the press of paws nearby. One ear twitches in acknowledgement, as if to say, I hear you, to whomever approached the solemn boy.
