private SILENCED BY THE BANG — ICEBREATH

──ᨒ↟↟ᨒ↟ᨒ↟↟ᨒ── He dips his paw into the small, stone-lined hole where he stores moss. His claws snag a wad easily, and he holds it close to his chest while crossing the sandy den to Icebreath's nest, where Wolfsong can observe their healing process. There is little he can do for her; Vulturemask did not teach him of many pain remedies, with the exception of dandelion leaves. He will offer those to the warrior once he leaves the moss atop her swollen paw, and if it were possible, he would have her soak in the Sun-Warmed Pool, just as he did Sunflowermask.

"We shall see if this eases some of the swelling," he explains as he drapes the moss gently over their paw. "How is your pain? I trust you will be honest with me— nothing which passes between us will reach other ears." Not by his doing, at least; the same cannot be said for eavesdroppers, but the den is quiet today.

WOLFSONG of WINDCLAN FORMER ROGUE TURNED MEDICINE CAT. 38 MOONS, HE/HIM, NPC X NPC. MATES WITH SUNSTRIDE (07/05/2023). BIOGRAPHY, PINTEREST, & PLAYLIST.
  • ★★★☆☆ WOUNDS: You're (mostly) in safe paws. You'll know if he's less experienced if he asks for your permission to try a treatment. No wound can scare him away from knowledge.
★★★☆☆ INFECTION: He can prevent most infections. If you feel feverish, let him know; he'll hum thoughtfully over herbs and sniff your wound before saying, "With your blessing..."
  • ★☆☆☆☆ ACHES & PAINS: If you complain to him of pain, he'll ask where. If it's a headache, you'll likely feel a bit better. For anything else, "Try this, if you'd like, and tell me how you feel."
★☆☆☆☆ BROKEN BONES: At best. he can ask you to remain lying down in the den. He may try to distract you with conversation while he considers what herb to feed you.
  • ★★★★★ TRAVELING HERBS: Going somewhere? No worries; Wolfsong knows just what you need to stay hale and healthy during your journey. The rest is up to you.
★★☆☆☆ KITTING: Thanks to Starlingheart, he's better prepared for the arrival of kits, but any complications will need a little faith and a lot of luck.
  • ★☆☆☆☆ POISONS: It's best if you avoid eating anything unfamiliar to you— it's probably just as unfamiliar to Wolfsong. The best he can do is offer you yarrow and sit with you.
★★☆☆☆ ILLNESS: If it's white or greencough, you'll likely recover. Otherwise, prepare for odd concoctions and the usual request that you consent to a little trial-and-error.

Icebreath watches the medicine cat with interest as he navigates the den, collecting supplies. Despite her almost lifelong suspicion of this profession, she has to admit that the work is incredibly valuable -- and impressive. It's something she's become increasingly aware of ever since someone she actually likes assumed the mantle... and now that she actually needs serious treatment for the first time. They also find themselves appreciating how peaceful this job seems, at least in comparison to warriorhood; no expectation to patrol or, more pressingly, to fight. That must be nice, she thinks impulsively, and then bites her lip as shame uncomfortably pricks at her. They love being a tunneler, they really do. It's an honor to carry out work that's so important in its own right. Even entertaining the thought of anything else feels disrespectful. Embarrassing. She is cut out for her work. She is.

Though she reflexively twitches her aching paw as the moss comes into contact with it, only a brief moment passes before she realizes how nice the coolness of it feels. It's still strange to see Wolfsong in this role, handling them and their wound so gently, as if he isn't a scarred, seasoned warrior himself. They almost miss his question amid their musing, but ultimately they do catch it -- and his continuation, his reassurance, surprises her. What surprises her more is how relieved she feels in turn. "It hurts a lot when I put pressure on it," she admits, "but otherwise it's tolerable." Granted, stubbornly walking and running on it for a week has allowed her to build up a decent pain tolerance.

The scrawny tunneler is quiet for a bit, but she looks troubled, pale gaze still trained on her wounded paw. "Do you think Sootstar's upset with me?" She looks up as she speaks. The words feel uncomfortable on her tongue, and they regret it almost as soon as it's out. They're afraid to hear Wolfsong's answer; they don't know why they even asked such an obvious question.

──ᨒ↟↟ᨒ↟ᨒ↟↟ᨒ── Tolerable, they say. Wolfsong will take her at her word, but that does not mean tolerable should go untreated. Given how long Icebreath waited to see him, Wolfsong also considers that the pain may, in fact, be irritating— they simply manage it well enough to maintain normalcy. "Here," he says, nudging dandelion leaves toward her. "Eat these, and tell me if the pain changes at all." He eyes daisy leaves, wondering if such a paste may do Icebreath's paw some good. He will wait to see the results of dandelion first.

Her tentative question draws his gaze sharply back to her, though he was merely...taken aback by it. Wolfsong hums thoughtfully, considering how best to answer. He is reminded of how young Icebreath still is, that it was not so long ago that she was an apprentice. Then, he thought it strange they seemed close to Firefang, so wholly opposite in every way, but perhaps she found some sort of comfort in such a brazen demeanor. Wolfsong once did the same, as a grieving kit, latching onto Sunstride's loud spirit. "Sootstar has lost much," he says eventually, looking away from Icebreath at last. He stares at the shapes on the walls, dried mud he'd applied while the kits still slept under his heart. "I believe..." He glances at the medicine den entrance. "I believe she is quick to find fault and weakness in all of us because her back is against the gorge, and we are the ground beneath her."

He looks back at Icebreath. Wolfsong has had Sootstar's favor these past moons, yes, but he is not clan-born, as Snakehiss delights in knowing. It was a long path to where is stands now, and the future is uncertain. "Her displeasure is not a measure of your character, Icebreath. It is not the fault of soil to crumble after a heavy rain, and the person who blames it is unbalanced."
