A small part of him maybe resented the name given to the apprentice. Forestshade had every right to honor his mother the same way he might've, her first mentor and a cat with significant relevance in her life but he also couldn't help but feel a little bitter the name didn't stay in his family. It was such a quiet voice though in comparison to his excitement at being given his first apprentice, something he had always been worried over never getting for no particular reason. Maybe it was because he didn't think their clan deputy had a high opinion of Briarstar's lineage and might've said something to Chilledstar, there was no denying the fact Smogmaw was somewhat of a stickler for his own and didn't like their dynasty; something to do with power or an inferiority complex if he had to guess. Or maybe he was overthinking, or maybe the blue tom was just a jerk. Who was to say.
None of that really dampened his newly awakened enthusiasm though.
"Little Thorn, on your paws. We're going out to see the territory!"
Skunktail had slipped into the apprentice den in silence, found the nest with his new ink spill of a student and raised a paw to nudge her awake as he spoke, "Almost stepped on you, didn't even see you in here."
It was still a little alarming how a blind cat had named a child after his mother who so much resembled her without even knowing what she looked like outside whatever description Starlingheart had given.

BRIARKIT — hello, my old heart.
Briarpaw didn’t think of her namesake all that much, the apprentice knew to carry a certain pride with it as she was named after her clans first leader and her mothers first mentor, the legendary Briarstar. While she had been told of their striking similarities, Briarpaw had only ever shrugged, there were dozens of shadow-furred warriors such as herself, what was the big deal?
Determined to make her own name for herself, Briarpaw has already awoken by the time Skunktail nudges her, green eyes looking electric in the dimmed light when she turns them up to her mentor.
Little thorn, on your paws.
She is up, unable to suppress a hefty yawn as the warrior continues. "I blend in." The raven child hums in reply, and while her tone is flatter than the toms, Briarpaw is eager to get going.
"Are we going right now?" She prompts, shuffling towards the exit without even thinking of breakfast- she had a whole world to explore.
