The steady drum of her heartbeat is what she opts to focus on as she departs the nursery that night, careful to make sure both Bristlekit and Marmotkit were sleeping soundly before she had left.
Tonight was the night she was to meet Elmbreeze again, who would hopefully have his answer and action plan ready. By dawn, they could be a family- a real family, not one hidden by the shadows of the night.
She reached their spot by the river with ease, though her legs were icy from the building snow, she made a point to make sure her stomach was covered at all times. A faint pant leaves visible clouds billowing from Echolight's nostrils and partially opened maw, it had become difficult to walk such lengths in her condition. If she had to guess, their kits were less than a moon away now, which made this rendezvous all the more important.
She sits, snuggling up against a tree to both balance out her weight and to curl into herself, though she figured she wouldn't be waiting long- Elmbreeze never made her wait long, especially in weather like this.
Ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum.
Her heart beat seemed louder than ever as she watched the fluffy snowflakes glide down from the sky, the powder almost muffled the worlds noise.
She leans her head against the tree, when she feels something stir in her gut- butterflies?
No, her children. "Be still now, little bunnies."
Her request is hardly above a whisper as she fans her tail out over her flank.
An hour passes by, and there is nothing but the silence of the snow.
Another.
Echolight casts her eye over her shoulder, noting the frost that had begun to develop, stemming from stray snowflakes that nestled in her dense pelt.
Ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum.
Her heart rate begins to excel, but she shakes her head. "No…no.." She whispers, her tone is desperate, even if it's spoken to only the empty landscape in front of her.
She doesn't budge, her front teeth sinking into her lip.
"Don't do this… no.."
Warm vermillion spills from her punctured lip, dribbling into the once pure snow.
She releases her bite, a shaky forepaw lifting to cover the flesh wound.
It's only when the suns light begins to poke from the horizon, casting the sky in a soft lavender, does Echolight begin to feel herself give up.
Oh, Elmbreeze… how could you?
Something sharp and painful squeezes at her heart, and she feels nauseous.
Another flutter shifts from her stomach, followed by two more, and Echolight blinks. "Don't fret, we'll be okay. I promise…"
Perhaps, from an outsiders perspective, she'd appear mad as she craned her head towards her belly and spoke soft but futile comforts.
She weakly gets to her paws and turns around, but her bleeding heart causes her to pause and give one last glance towards the other side of the river, but nothing stirs.
How could you?
"Speech."
