someplace under the sun | patrol assignment 08.28.22

"SUREFIRE, YEAH, THE SETTING SUN WANTS COMPANY"
Daisy Flight sat beneath the shade of High Branch, its gnarled silhouette dipping the clearing into a twist of shadow and sallow sunlight. Dawn graced the treetops behind her calico form. Letting the brittle sunup air chill her throat, the deputy sucked in a breath. "Skyclan! Round up, round up. It's patrol time. After Briarstar's announcement of borders, we have chosen to follow suit. These won't be instigatory trips, just an opportunity to lay scent markers and look over our borders." The implications of these hard lines her uneasy, but she supposed it would be needed. Hopefully, it would save them from repeating the past.

"Harpyfall, you will lead a patrol along the Riverclan border. Bring Basilpaw with you, and Leopardclimb, Drizzlethroat and Dawnglare." Their medicine cat's name was said with a little smirk, coy and dignified as it was. "I think it'll do you some good." She trusted the named cats to take good care near the waterway- Cicadastar seemed off to her. In what way, however, the molly couldn't put her claw on.

"Now, Blazestar. I've slotted you into a patrol along Thunderclan's border with..." She gave their leader a bright look. He had moped long enough, and so Daisy Flight decided he needed some time out of camp. "Ah, Deersong- please bring along Captain, Churrodream, Asterpaw, Redstorm and Sparkpaw. Rest assured, I will look after camp in your absence." It took a moment of sweeping the crowd to recollect the planned participants. So many moons in the nursery still held their clutches on her memory. She'd shake it off though.

"And finally, a hunting group to be led by Squallmist. Take your apprentice, Centipedepaw, Missy, Crimsonbite and Bumblepaw. I hope it gives you time for a little group teaching. May your prey be slow and fat." Taking full advantage of the new mentor arrangement the deputy thought it best to give the apprentices a chance to learn from those that weren't their usual tutors.

Pleased, she gave a quick groom to her snowy chest. Daisy Flight was glad to take a little of her leader's slack, sharing the responsibility was growing on her- being deputy had it's fleeting moments.

He's roused by Daisyflight's high, brisk voice, calling to the SkyClan cats and telling them to round up. Border patrols, she says, and Blazestar's brow furrows slightly. He initially wasn't too concerned with borders -- after Briarstar had announced she'd be patrolling her own at the Gathering, he'd dismissed it with a shrug.

After Haze and Squallmist had gone to WindClan, though... after Sootstar had killed Haze... he knows it's for their own safety if they ensure their borders are enforced.

He sighs and drifts out of his den to sit beside the calico. He thinks he'll only watch her organize the patrols, but the pointedly tells him to lead the one along the ThunderClan border. "I will look after camp in your absence."

He parts his jaws to protest, but finds nothing emerges. With a small, slight smile, the flame point nods and finds the warriors and apprentices she'd named in the crowd. He supposes it will be nice to get out of camp and do something for the Clan, and besides... Little Wolf could be there.

Bright eyes flaring with that thought, Blazestar turns to Deersong, Captain, Churrodream, Asterpaw, Redstorm, and Sparkpaw, and announces, "Well, then. You should all eat something, and then we'll set out.

The silver tabby looks up at the sound of the deputy's call. Patrols, she says. They're doing patrols. Building their borders, things like that.

Squallmist isn't sure how he feels about that. Sure, borders were good, especially in the wake of his brother's death, but the process of making borders caused alarm to him for the same reason. It only took one disgruntled outsider to come across the patrol for something to go wrong. At a time like this, that's the last thing SkyClan - the last thing Squallmist - needed.

But Daisyflight continues to speak, assigning Harpyfall to lead a patrol in RiverClan's direction, and Blazestar to lead another towards ThunderClan. Squallmist carefully listens to those chosen, only for his uncertainty to rise as he hears Drizzlethroat's name. As he hears Redstorm's.

A sibling on each patrol.

StarClan, keep them safe. Keep them all safe.

Squallmist thinks Daisyflight is done with her assignments and turns to leave, only to hear his own name seconds later. Ears flick in acknowledgement and he looks back to the calico-furred deputy, listening as she calls for him to lead a hunting group. Perhaps some time out of the camp would do him some good, he figures. Besides, it would be a good opportunity to get some training in, an opinion of which Daisyflight seems to agree with.

"As you wish," he says, a nod of his head before green eyes scan the camp for the rest of his hunting group - for Centipedepaw, Missy, Crimsonbite, and Bumblepaw.

"My group," he calls when he's finally got eyes on all of them, "Come with me."

Harpyfall straightens when Daisyflight's voice rings across the camp, tufted ears twitching in a silent acknowledgement. She directs him to mark out the border between SkyClan and RiverClan, between them and Rain's murderer. His eyes narrow, a distasteful curl of his lip following. Very well... He would not look for a fight. But if one were to find him, he wouldn't run with his tail tucked.

The cream cameo nods to Daisyflight and beckons for his patrol members to gather; Leopardclimb, Drizzlethroat, and Dawnglare, as well as his apprentice, Basilpaw. He'd chortled when the medicine cat's name slipped past Daisyflight's maw, a disbelieving look of, 'are you serious?' crossing over his expression. But as he regards the taller tom with a glare, there is a smug satisfaction that nestles within his chest to know that Dawnglare would have to obey him.

Once his patrol had gathered, Harpyfall jerks his head towards the entrance and begins to pad off. "Come on, let's make this quick."

Silver ticked ears perk up at the sound of the deputy's call and she raises her h ead up from where she had been attempting to take a nap. It's been a strainous day but she is more than willing to actually get moving and do something. Daisy talks about starting borders as well because of Shadowclan is doing it and she finds herself curling her muzzle a little bit. That group should not be copied in her opinion but there is nothing that she can do about the situation at the current moment. Pushing herself to her paws the woman makes her way over and she listens to the patrols that are going out. Her siblings are all on different patrols and she takes a moment to think about this. Sometimes she gets anxious about not knowing if things are okay with them and she glances over to look at Squall who also looks for her. She gives a small smile to try and reassure him, after all Harpy is their lead so things should be okay. Stepping off with the other she nods her head in understanding of his words.

Making this quick is the best option but she also knows Riverclan only because their leader used to be one of those marsh cats. Trying to stifle the fatigue she feels in her limbs she takes a deep breath in as she follows the other. "Right behind you, Harp."

Redstorm is glad that he isn’t going to River Clan or Wind Clan. He thinks of all the possibilities, how big of an opportunity he would have to dig his claws into either of those disgusting murderers or the idiots who followed them. He’s certain Daisyflight is thinking of this as she assigns him to a patrol to go to Thunder Clan.

Over time, his anger would fade. It wouldn’t always be so great but for now, with Squalls wounds so new and his other brother buried under fresh dirt, he would give anything to taste their blood.

He’s reluctant to leave Drizzlethroat and Squallmist. What if something happened? What if he wasn’t there to protect them? He watches them go with worried blue eyes before turning to Blazestar and the rest of his patrol. At least Churrodream would be going with him, that was a consolation, at least.

“You ready to go see some real ugly looking trees?” He asks her with a soft smile. “Thunder Clan will take one look at this group and wish they had stayed with us” he teases lightly before he turns with a whisk of his tail to join the rest of the patrol. “Keep up would ya” he flicks the smaller brown she cat with his tail then looks to Blazestar and nods.
