SPITTING IMAGE ⁀➷ SNAKESKIN, PROMPT

( ⁀➷ ) It's not a good time to be a new apprentice, as the thick of leafbare draws closer and closer. A chill runs through the air, a coat of white dusts itself across tree branches, and Fallow hasn't had much luck in catching anything. The forest is quiet, still. Empty. It's hard to learn when even the seasoned warriors are complaining of empty paws.

Fallow isn't empty-pawed now, but she doesn't exactly have prey either. She's found something much more interesting, strange string of sheer spattered with small, thin scales. Some kind of shell with nothing to hold; it drags across the leaves as Fallow brings it back to the patrol. Not food, certainly, her curious nibbling has proved that. It's deposited unceremoniously upon the forest floor, golden eyes flicking between it and the older patrol members. "Found something," the apprentice declares flatly, nudging her find forwards. She blinks down at it, face scrunched up in confusion. It does not betray the curiosity she feels, all the energy translating into what seems to be her favorite emotion: frustration. "Dunno what it is," Fallow mumbles. One of the others will know, hopefully.

Shinepaw had been going on more patrols since his recovery, trying his best to play catch-up now that the sickness was out of his system. The shaft of sunlight was trying to stay focused, to work his tail off and become a hunting machine for Thunderclan. The boy wanted all these things, but still could not deny his own nature.

As Fallowpaw appeared with a strange object clutched between her jaws, Shinepaw’s sense of curiosity mutinies against his sense of discipline. Like a student opting to play on their phone instead of study for a test, the boy became distracted. Sun-dappled fur shuffled forwards, and sky-blue eyes fixed themselves on the…what was that?

“Is it…a plant?” Shinepaw offered, hesitating for a moment out of fear of sounding stupid. it looked like a weird root or something, maybe it could be used for medicine? Or what if it was poisonous? The anxious apprentice took a step back, scared by his own mind. “Should we take it back to camp? Maybe Berryheart can tell us what it is.” The boy reached out to prod it, concluding that if it was poisonous then Fallowpaw would have been dead already. It didn’t stop Shinepaw’s face from scrunching up as he ran his paw across it, though.

freckleflame enjoys patrol with stormywing. the she-cat was spunky, and for once, it wasnt the tortoiseshell’s job to keep that sullen silence at bay. her apprentice, however.. sea green eyes flick to it every now and then, it’s sullen eyes and flat face. fallowpaw was a downer ; as much as she wished to lean in, cheer her up, there was something ancient and unnerving about it. still, no child had ever thrived on scrutiny — as much as she glances, wide - eyed, towards stormywing when fallowpaw announces a simple ‘ found something. ‘ the something in question didnt seem to be prey, either.

thick paws stop in the snow, watching as shinepaw totters up behind fallowpaw and pokes at something he deems a plant. she thinks of her father, and the red berries. she rounds close, just in case.

looking over fallowpaw’s shoulder, she sees it — a sloughed sleeve of scales, a thin layer of something white and wispy along its underside. recognition sparks in her gaze, ” oh, that’s an adder skin — y’can find lots of them up by snakerocks. when i was young we used t’ hang out past the stones when our mentors take us out, darin’ eachother to get close enough to get one when they weren’t lookin’. “ and perhaps that was dangerous information to give to two young, curious apprentices, but the two tagging along with their patrol were.. fun-adverse, if she were to put it nicely. it would sooner be stormywing bringing them to the rocks, once they were quick enough. still, her ears perk as if she realized her tongue had carried her too far ; a sheepish grin dances along her maw, tufted audits tipping back as soon as they’d lifted, ” but that was.. dangerous, for sure. what i’m tryna say is that could mean there’s one slitherin’ around here somewhere. always look where you’re goin, ‘specially in the undergrowth. buggers are tryna keep warm and you could step right on ‘em if you aren’t careful. “

Freckleflame is right - her new apprentice is a downer. She never thought her first chance at training would be with someone so...so...dejected? Whatever, she's sure she can turn it around. Hopefully. She catches her fellow warrior's glance, but quickly averts it back to Fallowpaw, approaching as she sniffs. She scoffs in amusement when Shinepaw calls the thing a plant, but Freckleflame is quick to swoop in and correct.

She recalls those games fondly, as she'd definitely been one of the daring troublemakers to play such dangerous games. Of course, she doesn't think Fallowpaw is near ready for something like that, so she shoulders herself in beside the tortoiseshell warrior to shake her head, "Snakes aren't out right now anyway, so can't play that game. Plus, I think Flycatcher would have my tail if I let you do something like that!" She chuckles, but she's sure she could be easily persuaded to do something like that. When her apprentice is older, that is.
I WANNA TASTE LOVE AND PAIN ☁︎

Nodding in agreement with Freckleflame, although she wouldn't have given that information to the apprentices. Should an apprentice of hers ever attempt such a thing? They'd be on tick duty for a moon for sure. "They're right you know. Adders are dangerous, one bite could leave you a one-way ticket to StarClan. Not even Berryheart could help you." Maybe expressing just how dangerous they could be would be enough for the young apprentices to understand why they should be more careful. Then again, they were apprentices. She recalled how stubborn and rebellious she'd been at that age. A simple scolding of how dangerous they could be wouldn't have stopped her.
