spread your wings and kiss the sky | climbing competition

With a gaggle of apprentices following her lead, Howlfire calmly leads them just outside of camp. The decision to host this little climbing completion was one born out of a need for a distraction, both for herself, and for her younger clanmates in the wake of a few tragedies.

Howlfire does not take her charges far - in fact, camp is still visible behind them - but they are far enough for them to still feel a sense of independence. "Now, which one of you would consider yourself the best climber?" Howlfire asks, maintaining a serious expression as she peers down at the apprentices. After a few of them mumble responses, Howlfire's mouth splits into a wide grin. "I don't want you to just tell me, I want you to show me!" Howlfire then proceeded to gesture at the nearest tree. "Whoever can prove to me they are as skilled as they claim will win this!" There is a brief pause as Howlfire ducked her head into a bush, before pulling out a fat wood pigeon from within, caught during an earlier hunting patrol she had been on. "This competition isn't just about how high you can go!" Howlfire warned her apprentices. "I want to see how you climb, how you manoeuvre across the branches, how you maintain your balance. Now, go! Prove to me which of you is the best climber!"

// a little silly for fun thread! apprentices only are invited to participate, warriors may watch though!

Sorrelsong, once afraid she would be named Squirrelpelt due to how often she is in the trees, follows Howlfire's gaggle of apprentices, her face split by a wide smile. The molly trails just behind the group to make sure there are no stragglers, though she would be happy to chat with any if there were some. Her claws itch as she lays slight on the tree Howlfire has picked out. It is quite the sight with a sturdy trunk and wide branches. It takes everything in the molly not to climb the tree herself, just to show the little ones it's safe, but she restrains herself. She's at a loss for how to encourage the younger cats how to climb but offers her own soft encouragements as it seems fit to the shyer apprentices.

To climb to where the trees scratched along the clouds and the blues was the true mark of a Skyclan warrior, in Chrysaliswing's eyes. After all, to go as high as the beasts of the sky was to meet with Starclan, swim along the milky waves of Silverpelt, to gaze upon their ancestors flitting amongst mottles and motes of kindling white. So when Howlfire arranged this climbing competition, Chrysalis dragged Jaypaw along, though getting her to do anything was like dragging his long, unfurling pelt through a maze of ivy tendrils. If anything, the chimaeric warrior was glad to pawn her off to another authority for the time being. He sat down near Sorrelsong as heterochromatic gaze watched the apprentices balance along the bowed boughs and scale up and down the rough bark. Secretly, he hoped Jaypaw would be the victor of the friendly competition, thus proving himself to be a great replacement mentor. Selfish and heedless, sure, but anything to get him invested in a boring, trite situation as this was worth it to him.

𓆝 . ° ✦ Weedpaw isn't competitive by nature. He doesn't care for proving himself against his peers or otherwise trying to show off to warriors. He has been taught for as long as he can remember that he's special- courtesy of his mother, of course- and he doesn't need further validation from his clanmates. Or worse, those outside of his relatives and family. However, his mentor is here, and the other apprentices had been jeering at one another at Howlfire's prompting of a competition for them. Weedpaw is begrudgingly willing to participate.

Weedpaw hesitates, lingering beside Sorrelsong and casting his gaze above. The sun filters through the leaves, dancing across them and dappling the ground and felines in a common blanket. He hasn't even been taught this technique yet. He has no chance of winning over the other apprentices; especially not Jaypaw, who has been apprenticed for awhile and now has Chrysaliswing for a mentor. And as if speaking of the devil, Chrysaliswing has all but dragged his apprentice to the competition behind Sorrelsong. If there's anyone that Weedpaw doesn't envy, it is certainly Jaypaw.

Against his better judgement, Weedpaw steps forward. He does not move with haste, knowing that he will not prove himself to be the best climber today. He plants his front paws on the tree trunk, and focuses on the canopy above. Then, with all the strength that the unpracticed young apprentice can muster, he unsheathes his claws and tries to pull himself up the bark of the tree. It probably appears to be most similar to scrabbling as he slowly and awkwardly scales the trunk, and Weedpaw begins to feel his ears burn with embarrassment. And when he glances down, he realizes he hasn't climbed very far at all
