A S H P A W.

Her ginger brow furrows as she creeps closer, peering toward the pair of apprentices gathered by the water's edge. Among pebbles and reeds, they seem to be chattering, friendly and casual. Maybe they're gossiping, or talking about training, or...

Well, they could be talking about anything. Green eyes blink and dart over the scene. She doesn't intend to eavesdrop, she just—isn't sure how to insert herself. Conversations have a flow that she can only remember understanding. It's been ages since she's really talked to anybody, however hard her clanmates have tried. Awkwardly Ashpaw sits herself a few tail-lengths back.

She'll sit quietly until she's noticed, hoping someone will magically pad up close to talk to her. Minnowpaw had, the little tabby a bit younger and scared-er than Ashpaw... but brave enough to say hello, which Ash currently cannot boast. She knows that she's usually the one to barge in yelling, welcome or no, ever unapologetic. She hasn't forgotten.

She just doesn't feel like it right now.

honeypaw had also been by the river, but was on her own a little further down the bank. it was primarily a fishing excursion. she had planned on getting some done! the intentions were there, but per usual she was distracted by something shiny. her nose was cold from being dipped countless times into the water when she thought something cool was beneath the surface. unfortunately, she had found nothing real good yet. full of hope though, she continued looking.

eventually, she came across the prettiest pebble she had seen in a while. it was bicolored, a bright warm brown and ivory, with pretty bands all throughout. she quickly grabbed it from the river, it's smooth and cold surface sending a shiver down her spine.

when she looked around for the nearest clanmate to show her prize to, she spotted two apprentices chatting. she began a happy trot over, the rock placed gently between her teeth. then, another apprentice caught her attention. she was sitting alone, observing the other two. honeypaw changed direction on a dime, now approaching ashpaw.

"hi!" she chirped a friendly, yet muffled greeting. as much as she wanted to talk, she wasn't going to just abandon her new possession! when she got closer to the other apprentice, she set the rock down and gave her a kind smile. she seemed timid, but honey hadn't been here long enough to know why exactly. "do ya like it?" the tabby inquired, pushing the rock towards ashpaw. now that she looked at it, the brown in the stone was quite similar to the other molly's fiery pelt. the moment she made the connection, it was no longer her rock. "it's for you, if you'll have it. the color kind of reminds me of your fur!" she added, sitting down and shuffling her paws rather nervously in anticipation for her response.

She is ever observant, despite being locked in the throes of conversation with another apprentice. At least -- she is listening to the throes of conversation, her attention split oddly between her Clanmate and their observers. Ashpaw. Unkempt, quiet, disengaged from Clan life for a few moons now. Some have tried to dislodge her from her strange mutism, and Honeypaw seems to be trying now, carrying a pebble around in her mouth and reminding her of Darkpaw. Though her brother wouldn't be gifting his rock to anybody.

Iciclepaw holds a paw up to halt the other apprentice's flow of chatter. "One second," she says, turning to pad over to Ashpaw and Honeypaw. She dips her head in a curt greeting to both she-cats, focusing her gaze on the stone.

"Pretty," she murmurs. She lifts her eyes to Honeypaw's. "That's kind of you, to part with it." Iciclepaw gazes at Ashpaw with a carefully concealed interest. "Maybe you can put it in your nest? Maybe it's good luck." StarClan knows the little ginger apprentice needs some.

// feel free to have your cat be the one iciclepaw was talking to, or it can be an npc!

A S H P A W.

Honeypaw's approach scares her right out of her skin. Ashpaw jerks away, whipping around, wild eyes wide—

Ears pinned back, she gasps for air, gaze darting around for the threat she knows is there. She knows he's there.

...but he isn't.

Just Honeypaw, chattering happily and offering her a—

A rock?

Ashpaw's ears lift, hackles falling, tension slowly slipping from her shoulders. Safe, she's safe... Honeypaw isn't like him. No one... no one here is like him.

And... a stone. Picked out for her?

That's... that's really, really, nice. Ashpaw leans forward, touching her nose to the little stone.

"It's pretty," she says quietly. "Thank you..."

Iciclepaw's approach doesn't cause nearly the same response—just a small flinch at the addition of a new voice. Iciclepaw was one of the cats she'd been watching, hoping to join the conversation yet unsure how, so it's easier to track the molly's sound and scent and footsteps.

Put it in her nest...?

That's a nice idea. She grins at the idea of good luck, turning glass-green eyes to Iciclepaw, bright and fond. She doesn't remember the calico being a superstitious type, but Ashpaw firmly agrees. Gifts are definitely good luck. "Yeah. I bet it is."

She cocks her head, gaze flitting from Iciclepaw to Honeypaw, taking note of the latter's anxious shuffling.

"I like it a lot," she says with a little purr. "I'll put it in my nest, yeah... the one Minnowpaw made me." Iciclepaw had helped her switch it out, and the fresh soft moss had been a really nice change. Warmth blooms in her chest at the memory, and at the sight of the little rock—Honeypaw had really picked it just for her?

She reaches out a paw to bring the pebble closer.

"Thank you," she says again, purring steadily now.
