Sootstar wants to be trusting of her clan, especially their youth, she does. Yet every time she’s let her guard down somehow… someone slipped through the cracks. With Firefang no longer covering for her in the apprentice’s den she needs a new willing apprentice to be her watchful eye… and she thinks she has the perfect cat in mind.

Sunstride’s apprentice, Sunflowerpaw.

”Sunflowerpaw,” Sootstar calls to the apprentice as they pass by her den, it seemed they were in the middle of a chore. It could wait. ”I’d like to speak with you. Pause whatever you’re doing, it won’t take long.” She doesn’t wait around for agreement, she slips back into her stone den and awaits the apprentice from her nest.

// @sunflowerpaw sorry this took me so long to get up! Ty for your patience

.°☀ AND IF IT EVER STARTS TO FEEL BAD, LITTLE FANG

Sunflowerpaw is carrying some moss to the elder's den when a voice calls upon them. It's a frustrating interruption; they've only just begun to be able to do even the most simple of chores around camp, what with Vulturemask hovering over them like a hawk. They take pride in it, in their new allowance of such menial tasks. They might ignore the call were it anyone else, but they know that voice. It's Sootstar, and they would be remiss to disobey their leader.

So Sunflowerpaw hesitantly places their moss by the leader's den -- the other apprentices will find it, surely -- and follows Sootstar into her den on unsteady paws.

What reason could she have to meet with them? Their brother, sure, he talks with Sootstar all the time, but Sunflowerpaw? The leader barely seems to give them more than a passing glance. They hum a soft, questioning tone, fixing her with a curious (and slightly wary) stare.

Soostar wastes no time once the attention of Sunflowerpaw is hers. ”Dangerous times are upon the clan. Enemies lurk in every shadow.” Ominously she starts, yet despite the dreadful tone she carries a calm demeanor.

”Cats who sought to harm WindClan have infiltrated the minds of apprentice’s such as yourself before. Making them believe that betraying their clan and convincing others to do so as well is their only hope.” The blue smoke sighs, the image of Snailpaw firmly in her mind as she tells this to Sunflowerpaw. ”I need an apprentice I can count on to tell me if a situation, such as Snailpaw’s, ever arises again. We were almost too late in catching Snailpaw… if we had not stepped in to turn them on the right path who knows what would’ve happened.”

Quiet falls over them as she tries to read Sunflowerpaw’s gaze, what did it reveal? ”Can you be that cat? Could I rely on you to tell me if any of your peers begin to show disloyalty to their clan?

.°☀ AND IF IT EVER STARTS TO FEEL BAD, LITTLE FANG

Sootstar's words clarify little, at first. Dangerous times, she speaks of, enemies lurking in every shadow. It sets them on edge. A warning, then? But why for them? Why Sunflowerpaw, barely beginning to recover from the consequence of their own recklessness, who holds so little power to do anything about these supposed threats? And yet, it is not spoken like a warning. Sootstar's tone is level, calm. Of couse it is -- she's the leader, she probably has everything figured out already. Sunflowerpaw just doesn't quite understand where they fit into her plans.

She continues, speaks of ill-meaning cats infiltrating the minds of apprentices. It's a danger they'd never thought to consider. Sunflowerpaw is a cat concerned moreso with a select few trusted cats than with the whole of their Clan. And yet, they cannot deny that all the ones they love are part of WindClan -- as well as themself, of course.

Perhaps they haven't been seeing the big picture, here.

Snailpaw, a fellow apprentice, is a cat that Sunflowerpaw has given little thought to. He's older than the rest of them, which is strange, but they've never thought to question his intentions. He seems harmless enough. The idea that even a cat as innocuous as him -- an apprentice they are to train alongside -- could harbor cruelty... It sets their mind running. Who else could be plotting against WindClan, against everyone they know and love?

Their eyes had been downcast, as they considered Sootstar's proposal. They've reached a conclusion, now. Sunflowerpaw may be powerless to do anything, but Sootstar is not. They still don't fully trust the leader -- and perhaps their wariness is warranted, if her words hold truth -- but she will make a good ally.

(And truthfully, a small part of them swells with pride at being entrusted such an important task by their leader.)

Sunflowerpaw meets Sootstar's gaze, a steely determination in their golden-sun eyes. They offer nothing but a sharp nod, no words wasted on pleasantries.

They agree, not that Sootstar had expected anything less. ”Thank you.” She replies gratefully with a dip of her head. This would put her mind at ease, the apprentice’s being corrupted had been a long worry, even more so with Firefang now being unable to watch after them. ”You may go back to your duties. Tell no one of this, those who need to know will soon enough.” Her feathery tail flicks dismissively.
