⋆✦⋆ It wasn't sunrise yet but Dreampaw was wide awake in his nest in the apprentice den. At sunrise, Asterflame had decided they'd be going to the Sandy Hollow to practice his battle moves. It wouldn't be too long until he would need to meet his superior at the entrance of camp.

He thought about the day ahead, twisting and rolling over among the trinkets that lined the nest where he slept which were mostly snake skulls but also an already browning leaf he'd plucked from the treetops a week earlier because he thought it was proof of how good a climber he was. He was about to heave a sigh when it caught in his throat as he was suddenly hit by a wonderful new idea.

Why not invite someone else along to train? The more the merrier, right? And the perfect training partner was obviously uh… An image of a particular cat with red tabby fur flashed across his mind's eye and he couldn't help but feel giddy with his own genius. Exactly! Gingerpaw was just the cat he needed for training today! He was reliable and could match his energy, or well, at least better than Asterflame ever could.

Standing and straining to step across a few still sleeping bodies of his peers, Dreampaw found Gingerpaw and in a half-cruel, half-exuberant spirit, he'd aim a jab of a paw at the ribs of one of his only friends.

"Gingerpaw! Hello, hey…! I've got training with Asterflame at sunrise. Got any plans? Could you and your mentor make it, plea–" but he stopped and blinked away some tiredness that still clung to the edges of his mind. What was he doing? Others could possibly hear him. The Dark Warrior talking like a normal cat? As if!

He quickly cleared his throat loudly as if to disregard what he had been saying. He spoke again, this time with a more intimidating and commanding tone of voice, "Gingerpaw, consider yourself lucky. The Dark Warrior will allow you to accompany him to training today."

*:・゚✧ Sleep was difficult. Gingerpaw was not plagued by nightmares that prevented him from a good nights rest, but he did have many doubts that plagued him that kept him up at night. The doubts he had were all focused on his lack of growth compared to his denmates. it's been plenty of moons and he was still struggling to keep up. if anyone were to watch him train they would see that he had the resemblance of a newly turned apprentice. his own brother wildheart during his apprenticeship was much more skilled. in fact, he'd heard his older brother quickly picked up what he was taught. despite the fact that they looked very much alike that you could tell without a doubt they were brothers, they were drastically different. Anyhow, He is dragged from the depths of his slumber by a harsh jab at his ribs. Amber eyes shoot open, "U-URK!" The red apprentice groans and his whiskers twitch in mild annoyance. What's the big deal?! Can't I at least be woken up gently? Geez!

The culprit is none other than Dreampaw. They've known each other ever since they were born, well... Actually mom said Dreampaw was born a moon earlier than I was. So it's more like I know Dreampaw ever since I've been born and he knows me for almost his entire life? Specifics aside, the pair knew each other and were close friends. That's why despite the rude awakening he would forgive dreampaw for it and won't yell at him that hey maybe waking your bestie with jabbing their ribs is not cool. At the mention of his name and greeting he yawns and nods that he is indeed paying attention to his friend who is asking to hang out with him.

Amber eyes blink in slight confusion in his friends sudden silence. Forgive him, he is still waking up from his rude awakening that when dreampaw resumes speaking it hits him. Oh, right. Dark warrior. I'm best friends with The dark warrior. hehe, you're cute when you do that dr- I MEAN. That's right, the dark warrior makes others bow down in his presence. Gingerpaw proceeds to rise to his paws and gives The dark warrior a salute, "I am grateful your darkness. what kind of training does the dark warrior allow me to join today?"

Maybe the way they converse with each other is strange in the eyes of others, but he sees nothing wrong with it. This is his closest and dearest friend and he would never be ashamed of the dark warrior, although he would be lying to say that he didn't enjoy the small moments where dreampaw spoke to him and not the dark warrior. if you asked him if he had a preference he wouldn't have any to be honest. the cat in front of him is his dear to him and that's what should matter, right?

⋆✦⋆ “Battle training.”

His smile is wide as ever, white fangs flashing, eating up the salute and delivery of ‘your darkness’ as he always did. It never got old. Being the Dark Warrior was the best!

Perhaps there was once a time moons ago where the Dark Warrior’s claws weren’t as eager to rip flesh and fur but since his mentor had noticed he displayed promise in a fight, it was fighting that he would soon eat, sleep, and speak. Working dawn to dusk, he’d be sure to take to the idea of vanquishing foes like squirrels to trees. In coming moons an opportunity to show his skills in a real battle would present itself. Dreampaw couldn’t wait, after all, the Dark Warrior was unbeatable and he’s make all his foes flee in fear. He wanted to be good in a fight so he could be depended on for something he was naturally good at.

And he wanted to cherish the feeling of striking down another cat, a l l t h e w a y d o w n to either stars or the abyss–which did not matter–in the name of Thunderclan.

And above all of that, he wanted Gingerpaw there beside him. The Dark Warrior’s greatest follower would be powerful, too. Ideally no more than a fox-length away so he could witness his true power. But also because he wanted, no needed, him there beside him. He had always been with Gingerpaw at his side for as long as he could remember so the future would be no different.

“My mentor says we’ll shift our focus from hunting to battle skills. Prey is destined to be hunted by me for I can feel them through the ground from here to Fourtrees and can blend into the shadows like a haunting specter!” Truthfully, he still missed pounces where half-experienced warriors would never but his technique had developed well-enough, assuming his patience and focus didn’t wane so much he got off track. But as far as Dreampaw was concerned, his hunting was perfect since he rarely noticed any of his potential shortcomings in the slightest.

He reached to this time gently poke at one of Gingerpaw’s white paws with one of his own, encouragingly, excited, and wistful. He hoped their mentors would get along. He knew Gingerpaw had a new mentor in Shiningsun now but he wanted things to still have some semblance of how it had been and they could train together when allowed. Because it would simply be a shame to drift apart, right? In fact, the Dark Warrior would find it unforgivable.

Dreampaw would flick an ear back behind himself in what was supposed to be an indication to the front of camp. ”Race ya to the tunnel. Don’t you dare disappoint me!” and then the chiefly black tortie would take off, vaulting over one final sleeping peer before emerging into the early-morning bustle toward the camp entrance.

*:・゚✧ Battle training... That wasn't too bad. Gingerpaw gives his friend a slight nod in acknowledgement of what today will be about. When he trained with Darkflight, he picked up battle training better (not by much) than hunting. Although he supposed that made sense. Hunting and fighting were two different areas. His struggle with hunting was the need for stealth. For some reason it was like prey was able to spot him from a mile away, which... Sucked to be honest because how was he supposed to practice hunting if all prey within radius fled before he could even take a pawstep? He is aware that the bright pelt does him no favors, Darkflight made it abundantly clear that he would have a harder time hunting compared to his other peers with pelts that blend in with the forest. It is only natural he would think of Dreampaw hunting because if you placed them standing together they were the sun and the moon. Well not literally but the idea was there.

Gingerpaw wouldn't say he displayed promise in battle, but his former mentor did acknowledge that he was slightly better at fighting than he was hunting. Besides! Practice and hard work would make things worth it, right? He might not be gifted as some might call his brother Wildheart, but that didn't mean he was going to give up. He was going to improve himself and with someone like Shiningsun he can see that despite the older tom not having as much experience as his former mentor, he was still going to become strong. Maybe not as strong as his brother, but he was going to work hard to attain the strength he could be proud of. And... He would be lying to say part of it was not shaming his friend Dreampaw. The last thing he'd want is his best friend abandoning him or dismayed at his lack of growth.

Not that he thinks Dreampaw would ever abandon him because it just seems unreal. It's hard to even imagine them not being together. They've always been together. He doesn't want a day where The Dark Warrior isn't there. To be honest while Gingerpaw knows Dreampaw for all his life, sometimes he struggles to fully understand what his friend is saying. He does understand, or that the gist of it is that Dreampaw is saying he's an amazing hunter. other than the easiest part to dissect which is that Asterflame is shifting his friends training more towards battle than hunting. In any case he puffs out his chest and purrs, "it's only natural for prey to tremble in fear and succumb to your darkness. no prey is able to escape the shadows." is it bad that he's feeding into his friends ego? perhaps, but was it so bad?

Surprise would be found on his face when his paw was gently poked by Dreampaw's own. It wasn't as if his friend was incapable of being gentle, but it was not commonplace. is... is something wrong dream? or is am i supposed to take the hint and be soft too? Unaware of what was going on in the dark tom's mind, he gave him a soft smile and would slowly and gently place his white tipped tail on their paws. This moment between them would be broken when he notices dark ears flick, amber eyes would trail towards the exit of the den.

Very much like a haunting specter his friend described himself, he would leave the den. Hey! No fair! With a huff and roll of his eyes, he jumps over the same sleeping peer and bounds over to the camp entrance. Of course, Dreampaw is ahead of him. He picks up the pace, loud thumps would be heard drawing near, "Don't think I won't catch up!" The distance between them would grow shorter and shorter, a maniacal laugh could be heard coming from Gingerpaw who was tail length away. "What kind of Dark warrior follower can't keep up with the shadows?"

⋆✦⋆ Tail swishing in tell-tale excitement, Dreampaw would run straight for the camp entrance. Asterflame was supposed to be meeting him there but he didn’t see his mentor’s form waiting there yet. He had demanded a race and he was holding nothing back, per usual, as he ran. And starry skies above help any cat who may accidentally amble into his headlong reckless rushing.

He caught Gingerpaw’s words in the wind and heard the steadily approaching patter of pawsteps behind him. Yes, that’s right, his followers were molded from the same darkness that both swarmed around him and trembled at his own impossibly darker darkness. ”Haha, whooo!” he’d breathily cheer into the air as he added his own eccentric and slightly villainous laughter along with Gingerpaw’s.

But then something changed.

Dreampaw was undeniably agile, able to twist, turn, duck, slide, and tumble with all the ferocity of a stoat in a weasel war dance. That being said, he was short-legged and had less than ideal stamina for a full-out sprint than some of his peers and that included Gingerpaw. He was certain that Gingerpaw could and would beat him. Who knew long-distance running was something the Dark Warrior so despised?

It was right about the moment Gingerpaw would catch him that Dreampaw swatted at his friend’s face with his tail and without a word of warning, slid to a halt right in front of him. This was beyond risking a collision and he wasn’t sure if Ginger would trip to avoid him or crash into him or something worse but the dark tortoiseshell wore only a smile as if this was exactly as things were supposed to proceed all along.

They were still a few meters away from the place anyone would usually call the camp entrance.
