SUMMER SONG [✦] heatwave

Green-leaf was a beautiful time of year. The forest was healing from the fire that had raged through it in the last cycle of the seasons, the foliage growing back stronger than before like she had predicted it would. It was not the first fire she had seen in her life, after all, and she is certain it would not be the last. This time, however, they were in a clan. Stronger through their numbers and their willingness to work together to survive. It was nice to see the forest thriving like it should be, to see the prey coming back, but with Green-Leaf always came the unbearable heat. Her dark pelt was like a beacon for it. It drew in the suns rays and made her miserably warm, making her yearn for leaf-fall, which she knows is right around the corner.

She is beat from hunting that morning, though she had tried to get out early to beat the worst of the sun the air was still stifling. And it would only get worse as the day progressed. When she comes back to camp she deposits her kill and immediately makes a beeline for the warriors den, mouth open partially to allow a pant. As she enters, she sees she is not the only warrior trying to beat the oppressive heat. "This weather surely is something huh?" she says to the cats who are there as she finds her nest and throws herself into it. She can only imagine what cats like her son were feeling, cats with dark plush coats. She is thankful to have been born with short fur. "Anyone got any tips for staying cool when it gets like this?"

With the hectic lives that they both live, Lily feels like she hasn't interacted with Little Wolf enough. She's missed her older sister. So, when Little Wolf appears and talks about the weather, Lily Pad pipes up immediately. "Oh, it's horrible. It almost makes me miss leaf-bare." Almost. She didn't miss the lack of prey.

"Unfortunately, no." Lily had been doing her best to spend most of her time in the shade when she could, but that's about it. "Maybe it'll start raining?" She doubts it, but a girl could dream.

( ) The heat was definitely unbearable, Hailstorm's snowy coat might not have been a beacon for the sun like Little Wolf's but it was definitely plush and thick which still made his body rather hot. It sometimes made Hailstorm wish that they were able to swim like Riverclanners so they'd have some way to cool down their bodies then they could make double use of Sunning Rocks. He lifted his head up seeing someone else slip into the warriors den, it wasn't much cooler than it was outside considering the bodies that were inside and he had half the right mind to leave but decided to stay where he was. "It sure is... It makes me wish that it was leaf-fall already," Hailstorm would say with a soft huff leaving him and rested his head onto his burly paws, his ears perked forward to show that he was still idly listening.

His expression was thoughtful for a moment before turning his dark orange gaze in the direction of Lily Pad who said that maybe it'll start raining and he honestly wished for a bit of rain right about now. "Maybe if we ask a Riverclanner really nicely, they could give us some swimming lessons." He'd say jokingly with a dumb grin on his face and shrugged his shoulders then his ears laid flat against his head, he added chuckling quietly "I don't got any other bright ideas, unfortunately." Man, he really wanted it to rain right about now.

nightbird generally didn't have many woes regarding the weather when it was docile. a light rain was refreshing, maddening once it grew into thunderstorms that washed scents away. the snow was useful when it powdered the ground lightly showing the tracks of skittering mice and squirrels, but the blizzard they experienced this leaf-bare was debilitating.

even some warmth wasn't too bad. it warmed her dark pelt in a usually relaxing way. but it had been getting hotter, more so than she could have ever imagined. sweltering, unbearable. usually her endurance was impressive, but it had her faint and fleeing to shade not long after leaving it. nightbird had taken her apprentices out early, finished with them not long ago. she had found refuge in her nest much like a few other warriors.

the lead listens to their chatter, tilting an ear to little wolf's request for recommendations. unfortunately, neither lily pad or hailstorm had much to offer. she offers a snort of amusement to the latter's joke before rolling to pull herself to a sit. it was even to hot to lie down. "never thought i'd say this but the river does sound nice." she is nearly reluctant to even say such kind words in reference to riverclan's namesake. "hailstorm, since it was your idea you should have the honor of askin 'em. it's only fair." she hums flippantly, a humored grin sent to the light-furred warrior.

Like his older sister Lily Pad, Raccoonstripe’s tabby pelt is thick and dark, and greenleaf has proven to be brutal. The sun that their Clan had welcomed readily only moons before now beats upon their bodies and dries the moisture from their tongues. He listens to his Clanmates’ ideas on staying cool, and they recommend using the river. Thoughtfully, his nose twitches. “I wonder if just wading in the shallows might feel nice. Screw swimming.” He shudders, remembering Silverlightning and Flamewhisker swept away by the currents. He doesn’t fancy a swim himself. “Or maybe we could soak some moss and dab our fur with it…

He props himself up on one tufted elbow, dark eyes shining. “S’pose we should be more grateful. We’ve got the tree coverage, at least. Imagine being in WindClan with nothing to shield us from the sun.” He couldn’t imagine living so exposed to the skies and the elements—and not for the first time, he’s grateful he’d followed his mother and kin to the oak forest they live in now.

Berryheart was prone to moving about throughout the day- herb-hunting, and then flitting from one sun-spot to the next in the confines of camp. Ever had he been prone to frequent daytime napping- a light sleeper, even the lightest buzz of conversation jostled him from hazy dreams, drowsy eyes hooding in half-awareness. Ever-possessive of a penchant for eavesdropping, Berryheart could not help but overhear, from where he lay- a tail-length or so from the entrance of the warrior's den- many voices of his kin. Inky and Cloudy, too... complaining about the heat, it seemed. He could hardly blame them- his naps had been harder to grab a hold of, his pelt mostly in-shadow as it was...

A good listener, he could not help but overhear his brother speak of soaked moss as a coolant. It seemed a sound theory... one the fire-flecked tom could find little fault in. The cats within the warriors' den would hear his low monotone through the wall, a simple murmur of "I have moss." If they wanted to test the hypothesis... he was equipped to let them.

( ) Hailstorm couldn't help but chuckle when he heard Nightbird speak up and mention how he should ask since it had been his idea, he sat up before raising his head up and placing a paw onto his chest as he replied playfully "I shall do my best to convince them," A soft purr leaving him before his eyes turned over to Raccoonstripe who seemed opposed to swimming though for very good reasons, Hailstorm is certain that if he set a paw in the water and attempt swimming... He might sink. He pushed that thought away continuing to idly listen "Both of those sound like good ideas," A nod of his head and let his body slip back down onto his nest as he heard the warrior mention Windclan, that was true, the moorland cats could've been dealing with it worse than them. Most of the clans had their trees and Riverclan, well, its river.

Perking up at the sound of Berryheart's voice, the snowy warrior found himself almost flinching though he recovered quickly and pulled himself onto his paws once more. It would be in their best interest to, at least, try the soaked moss and see if it helps the lot of them cool down. If not, Hailstorm could possibly bring up the river once more but going through with Raccooonstripe's idea than his own. He probably couldn't convince a Riverclan cat to teach them and if he did, well, maybe they'd let him sink who knows. "Oh yes, we'd love some moss." He glanced to the rest of his denmates tilting his head forward as if signaling for them to follow and Hailstorm stepped outside. Trying to stay cool would be a lot more beneficial than complaining about not being cool.

Unfortunately for Leopardtongue she was one of the cats who's darker fur caused more heat to be drawn to her, though she considered herself lucky that she didn't have the really dark fur like Nightbird or Little Wolf. When the talk of the heat was being done, the she-cat couldn't help but prick her ears and listen, hoping for tips that could help her not be so hot while she was out walking around in the territory, but so far it seemed like there were just temporary solutions that hadn't yet been tested, both requiring getting wet, which would prove difficult sometimes. They wouldn't hurt to try though.

"Maybe there's places through the territory to help with the heat too." She'd suggest, thinking. There had to be a way the prey kept cool in the heat like this, unless they were StarClan blessed to not feel the effects of it so that the cats had plenty to eat during green-leaf. If the moss worked though she'd try anything to keep her fur wet in the heat like this, even learning to swim if need-be, though she didn't think that'd work for those with longer fur - seemed like it'd just slow them down on dry land with wet fur.
