"Owlpaw," she calls lazily. They're taking a break from their duties and with the river right along the edge of camp, Sunpaw's already found herself slipping into the surface of the water. The cold chill of it is comforting, and the feeling of her fur soaking down only reminds her of her newfound agility in the water. She's already smiling. But she knows that maybe... Owlpaw might have a different opinion of it right now, so she keeps it to herself, just curling her toes into the water lazily. "I'm older than you, right?" She vaguely knows, but she's never actually asked. Plus, if she's being honest, it's not as though she had exactly been paying attention to Owlpaw until pretty recently where their friendship became stronger. This is probably something she should know, right?
"So like, you technically have to listen to what I say, right?"
He was keen on taking breaks, especially when hemlockshine wasn't watching and breathing down his neck about how lazy he was. So as soon as Sunpaw decided to take a break, he would too. The larger apprentice would be found rolled over with his belly stretched out on the edges of the river, basking in the warmth the sunlight provided them. His paws tucked into his chest, one green eye poked open as his denmate spoke, and at first he was going to respond, but he was glad he didn't immediately.
"No... Remember my elder greys? I'm older," he lied, with a scoff, closing his one eye again. But in reality he was younger than the she cat. "What do you need," he groaned, as if she already asked him a million things. But of course, she asked when he was comfortable. He didn't mind doing stuff for her though, but her directly saying she wanted to boss him around made him feel a bite... Spiteful.
If there was one thing about RiverClan that Sunpaw would begrudgingly admit was pretty great, it'd be Owlpaw. Or maybe she just got lucky to find someone her age who understood her more... grating personality, but even now they take to eachother's presence without a single thought. She takes to the river, he takes to the sunbeams, but both of them are equally comfortable without force.
"Yeah, okay, but if you weren't Elderpaw," she chimes. But maybe that answers its own question. He is younger than her then? She lazily turns her head to look him over again. Huh. But he groans at her implication, and she squints at him as she slaps a paw on top of the water to try and splash him indirectly
"I was just asking. Sheesh, do you think I'm just here to bug you?" Well, he wouldn't be incorrect, but she hides that grin to herself as she briefly ducks under the surface to get her face wet, twitching her ears as she resurfaces. She'll hold her original thought until after this. "Okay then, if you're Elderpaw, what would you want from me, huh?"
"To not splash my old aching bonness," he rumblEd, tossing her a side of a grin as water splashed over him. "But yes, you are older than me unfortunately." He responded with a straight answer finally, rolling over onto his paws to reach over to the water and splash it back at her. A mischievous grin would be on his features.
Unfortunately, as he swiped his water at her, she submerged anyways, missing his splash. So in turn, his tongue would stick out to her. "You're elder paw today." He said, rolling his shoulder and standing up to do whatever she requested. Perhaps just a bit too eager.
But he enjoyed sunpaws presence, it sent little flaps in his stomach to be near her. It brought a vulnerability to his mind to see her, and- he didn't quite understand it. No other girl ever made him feel this way. But she made him feel this way. It was... Nice.
His dramatics make her snort, which in turn makes a little laugh escape from her as he tries to splash her back. Tries, because she disappears under the water. He sticks his tongue out at her and she just rolls her eyes. "Real mature, Owlpaw," she teases.
"Aw hey, why are you getting up?" she complains. Dang it, there goes her idea of putting her wet paws right on his chest so he'd get soaked. But there's a little snicker from her anyway at how quickly he gets up to her paws to follow her 'demands' despite him just complaining about it.
"You're too easy, Owlpaw. You'd really do anything I said? No questions asked? Even if it was something really stupid?" she asks curiously. Now this really is interesting. Sure, they're friends, but even she would be questioning the things he would ask of her. If only because she would want to know what she was getting into. Why is it that Owlpaw is so willing?
"I'm glad you think so," he teased, knowing damn well she didn't actually mean him as a mature figure.
He moves to stretch, though stops as he heard cracking in his shoulders and Sunpaws words. "Because obviously you're struggling with something, and maybe I don't mind helping you. Got a problem with it?" He asked, finally pulling himself up to watch her with mismatched eyes. And a part of him questioned even himself.
He was never really willing to help others, or do as said. Especially shown with how hard Hemlockshine was working him lately. But maybe it was putting him in a better footwork to just do things and be more apt to help. He did have a lazy demeanor, and he didn't exactly want to be lazy. But he just was. "what? You gonna tell me to jump off the gorge? I just might, for you," he said in a teasing tone. Though, he kind of felt serious about it.
Sunpaw just rolls her eyes. And for once it's a sort of teasing that doesn't annoy her to hear it. Even if she flicks an ear and heaves a sigh as she realizes Owl's being serious about this, which means she also has to meet it in kind. Well, sort of at least. She might have been joking to begin with, but this is a fun power to have.
"Got a problem with it?" she echoes him openly, but she pulls herself out of the water, dripping from her fur, and shakes her paws out lightly. "Who said I'm struggling with anything?" she counters cheekily, looking up from her paws to cast Owlpaw a snarky grin.
And then she gasps playfully. "Really? For me? You'd jump right off?" It's only a half second she can hold that tone before she snorts. "I said something stupid, not something deadly."
And... would he really? Why? It hangs her up for a second so that for a moment her words sort of lag. She forgets what she was going to say. "Since you're such a loyal 'paw to my Elderpaw...-ness," He better not say anything, "Then... Tell me something you like about me."
"Me," he scoffs, letting out a laugh and a grin as she asks who said she was struggling. "Do you have a tick you cant reach?" Owlpaw continued, almost breathless from the burst of laughter coming from him after the latter statement.
"Maybe, but only if you ask nicely." He adds, the grin remaining on his face. She was a bit more of the demanding but not asking nicely, he felt. But it wasn't an actual jab anyways. "I know!" He countered, stumbling for a second as he actually didn't know. But he wouldn't let her think otherwise.
And then she asked a question and his heart fluttered. What he liked about her? The way she made his days brighter, the way she gave him drive and determination to do better. For her. The way her fur flowers a certain way when the sun hit it. He blinked, watching her for a second, contemplating. He couldn't say that ...
"Well... Ah, I heard something from the other apprentices- and I think it fits- if you look at the tree-" he lifted his paw to point out a single leaf falling from its branch, dancing and twirling in the air. "Even leaves fall for you." It was definitely not put the same way. But how was he supposed to admit the first feelings that came from his mind?
"StarClan above, stop talking," she huffs; not that she's actually being serious about it because even as she starts ruffling her pelt out, trying to get the worst of the dripping to stop, she's got that tiny edge of a smile on her face. She's amused.
"Since when do I ask for anything nicely?" she mutters in response. It's horribly self-aware for the fact that she's immediately got Owlpaw countering her seconds later. She snickers.
But then she asks this, expecting him to joke back; maybe say something off-hand or silly, or something vaguely genuine like they've said in the past. That Owlpaw is at least a little bit smart, that she's at least a little bit fast - but he really pauses. Like actually actually pauses, and for a second Sunpaw does too. Should she... not have asked that? Why is he thinking about it so hard?
Her heart skips a beat and she no longer knows the answer she's looking for.
Something from the other apprentices. Right. And what he says is so unbelievably corny that there's no way he spent that amount of time thinking about it. But it works. She snorts; laughs, too, but her laughter sounds a bit breathless in her own ears anyway.
"Sure, Owlpaw," she says rapidly. Because there's a little sudden increase in her heartrate that tells her maybe she... shouldn't go down this line of dialogue any further. She pivots with him instead, not knowing it was ever a pivot at all. "And you must be a frog, because you make everyone's hearts leap."
