pafp TEMPORALITY AND PERMANENCE [mentor check-in]

༄༄ Scorchstreak trusts Sedgepounce. They do. The other tunneler had gone on the journey into the mountains with them, bold enough to volunteer himself for the dangerous trip. And most importantly, he had survived. He had returned to tell the tale of danger and teamwork, and has remained a dedicated warrior since. He did not stray from the corona of light cast by Sunstar's victory over Sootstar, and he did not flee to the hills with the rest when their queen fell. The period during which he had been missing was resolved; he had returned as loyal as he had ever been, and still the tom holds Scorchstreak’s respect.

Golden eyes narrow as she spots him meandering through the camp, and the thought to check in on her niece passes through her mind. "Sedgepounce," she says as she draws close to the moor runner’s side, having not bothered to give him any warning before slipping from the tunnel to greet him. She hovers at his shoulder, eyeing Sedgepounce. The way he stands, the way he holds himself—will he pass that down to Bunnypaw? Rattleheart’s kit deserves only the best mentor, and if Scorchstreak must interrogate her niece’s mentor to ensure that Bunnypaw gets the training that she deserves… she will do so. "How is Bunnypaw’s training going? What are you teaching her? Is she progressing steadily?" The trio of questions falls from her maw without pauses in between, offering the tom little chance to respond before she is firing off the next, and the next. Her gaze remains locked on his face, searching. Seeking.

What do I want today? Hare or bird? Sedgepounce wonders, thinking of lunch. It's a dilemma so preoccupying that he's entirely oblivious to the threat looming in the shadows until it's striking him directly, a snake in the tunnels. "Uh—Scorchstreak!" Sedge returns. She stands beside him with golden eyes piercing, observing, and for a moment she just...stares. Sedgepounce stares back. The whole thing hits him with a sense of deja vu, except Scorchstreak is no Badgermoon, and Sedgepounce is no longer a misbehaving apprentice. He wracks his brain for reasons he could be in trouble and for once comes up short.

"Oh, uh." He blinks dizzily at the rapid-fire questioning, feeling very much like a bug pinned beneath Scorchstreak's unyielding paw. She's at least a head shorter than he is—a fact which does nothing to make her seem any less intimidating. "Well...She learned a lot about the Warrior Code and our borders last moon. This moon we've been focusing more on hunting and sparring techniques. Uh—no catches yet, but I think that's pretty normal." He can't really remember when he caught his first prey. Maybe younger than Bunnypaw, but at her age he was already halfway to warriorhood too.

Is she progressing steadily? "She..." Sedgepounce starts, stops. A pensive frown crosses his maw.

Casting a furtive glance around camp, Sedge leans closer to Scorchstreak. "Bunnypaw's trying her best," he admits, voice hushed. "She's just...anxious. Like, all the time. She gets scared to go hunting, she shuts down whenever we join a border patrol. I've tried to show her that she doesn't need to be so scared, but...I feel like if I push her too hard her heart's gonna explode or something." Sedgepounce looks upon Scorchstreak now—not as deputy, but as journey-mate. What do I do? he all but pleads.

Chartreuse eyes practically flutter as the Deputy's voice pierces the silence and like a serpent unwinding from its burrow, the chimera slinked away from the Nursery and into a range to better be able to hear what the pair were talking about. Disappointment caused his ears to twitch as he realised they were just talking about an apprentice, one who, according to the tabby, could scarcely even be called a cat. Mousepaw seemed more fitting, through Sedgepounce's description, he saw a little one skittering through life as prey in a world of carnivores, hiding under every stray patch of brush that would protect them from reality. 'She would have never been allowed to stay in Sootstar's WindClan.' He tilted his head, the smile upon his muzzle twitching as he reminisced of the rogues that had plagued their lands and the timid cats who had lurked in the shadows waiting to strike.

It almost felt like a victory against Rattleheart, for him to be able to say his kittens were far better suited for this life than hers, but as he thought it, his gaze caught Scorchstreak's and he decided that being a rooster was best saved for the Nursery where his superior parenting skills would be better appreciated. "She is sick, is she not?" He turned towards Sedgepounce, the passive smile faltering at his own accusation. "We have seen it before, where cats lose the ones they hold dearest and change because of it. It is like a second pelt upon their shoulders, yet whenever someone else tries to take it off, they put it back on. It becomes... comforting." She is comfortable being so damaged by Rattleheart's death. He thought himself above trauma, that he survived despite the weight of the forest crashing down upon him at every waking moment because he was too strong to give up.

When the physical body ailed the presence of more talented cats, it was a blessing to know that his mind was still sharper than an eagle's talon.

"Perhaps insight from someone less comfortable would be beneficial," he angled his head downwards to look towards Scorchstreak, eyes like a doe's.
