Visiting their mother's grave together had been the first time Midnightpaw had felt close to Frightpaw since the invasion. Being around the silver-spotted girl brought up a whole slew of feelings she wasn't ready to deal with: grief, anger, guilt, heartache. She didn't want to blame her sister for Nightingalecry's death, but she couldn't forget what she saw either. She couldn't help but wonder if Frightpaw had just stayed out of the way, would their mother have won against Ebonylight? And then there was the overwhelming sense of doubt and displacement at knowing now that they weren't really siblings. Did she have any right to be upset about Nightingalecry's death when she wasn't really her daughter?
It was difficult to sort out, and Midnightpaw wasn't good at confronting her emotions. She would rather ignore them and wait for them to go away. But she missed Frightpaw and wished she could have her exuberant sister back, talking her ear off like she had before that terrible night. So the morning after they went to the grave site, the ebony apprentice had gone out of her way to catch a juicy robin. She was socially inept at the best of times, and coming up with a better icebreaker was beyond her capabilities. So she brought her meagre peace offering over to the ghostly molly where she rested in camp, gently placing it at her paws. Midnightpaw lowered herself to lay on her belly across from Frightpaw, sky-blue gaze wide and vacant as ever. "How are you?" she asked quietly.
