*+:。.。 Bugpaw wanted to be someone who could make others laugh. It is a lofty goal, especially for one who relies heavily on archaic humor tactics like puns, but she was determined. If she smiled long enough, laughed hard enough, and looked at the world with eyes shining with positivity, then it'll surely encourage others to do the same. Any lapse in her efforts could spell ruin! No matter what, she needed to be someone who, in the very least, proved that there was always a reason to smile, even during the darkest time.
But today was so hard.

Bugpaw would watch from a distance as Meadowpaw left for patrols. Although the sun was growing dimmer by the day, winter it turned in the sky as a good friend should, the few rays that still burned brilliantly made Meadowpaw's fur catch flame. She was so pretty...when had thoughts like that felt so bad to have? Ever since the two had broken up - if it could even be considered that, what with Meadowpaw calling their relationship a "pretend", nothing felt right. Good things were now painful, and bad things were excruciating. Before, sleeping over in Meadowpaw's nest had been a fun nightly pass time, gossiping into each other's ear as Bugpaw worked up the courage to hold paws had been a memory that made Bugpaw giddy! Now, to be even in the same den as Meadowpaw kept Bugpaw awake at night, the thought of what her paw might've felt like leaving Bugpaw's eyes itchy and her breath harder to control.

They were still friends...at least she hoped so? How could one not know if they were or weren't? What were they, then? Bugpaw still loved her...but that hurts - so she just cares about her? Could love have been diluted? Gosh, that hurts to consider. Everything hurts to consider. Everything just hurts -

Bugpaw blinks when she feels someone bump into her. How long had she been standing just at the mouth of the apprentice's den? "Oh excuse me!" she giggles, but the words feel thick, the laughter strained. When she attempts to move out of the way, she notices familiar blue and cream tabby fur, and upon recognizing Squirrelpaw, a burst of happiness fills her chest.

And with that, Bugpaw suddenly begins to sob.

It was incomprehensible to imagine that anyone could look at Bugpaw and not immediately fall in love with her radiant energy. Her sister had a certain charm that she had never seen before; an ability to dazzle even the grumpiest of cats just by talking to them. It was something that Squirrelpaw had admittedly always been jealous of. She was never capable of brightening people's day the way that Bugpaw instinctively could, and she wished she had that kind of spark. But being privy to the real Bugpaw, getting to be the one her sister confided in behind closed doors, was a privilege she could easily console herself with. There was nothing she wouldn't do to keep that smile on her twin's face, no distance she wouldn't travel to keep her shining like the sun.

But Squirrelpaw had been failing in her duty as a good sister recently. She'd been so wrapped up in how difficult the mutiny had been for her, so focused on her own raging feelings that she hadn't been paying enough attention to Bugpaw. It was an easy thing to do, when the other blue tortie was so good at pretending she was fine. She hadn't seen the cracks beginning to form, hadn't noticed that her sister had been pulling away or spending less time with Meadowpaw. If she looked closely enough, she would have seen that Bugpaw was so far from okay.

Squirrelpaw had noticed her sister standing at the mouth of their den, and had purposely bumped into her shoulder as she passed on her way out for morning patrols. "Geez, watch out, Bugface!" She'd thought it would make the girl smile, or spit out one of those terrible puns she seemed to have an endless supply of. A mischievous grin quirked at the corners of her mouth as Bugpaw giggled and apologized, but her expression quickly fell. It was an odd response... She expected a fake mean mug thrown her direction or at the very least, a bit of silly teasing. Not... whatever this was. "Buggy?" she asked in a voice dripping with concern.

And suddenly, like a dam bursting after a heavy storm, her sister's cheerful mask broke. The sobbing caught her by surprise, her forest gaze widening to the point of hurting before her brow furrowed with sympathy. "Oh, buggy..." She cooed in a soft voice and pulled the other apprentice into a tight hug, allowing her to cry into her chest for a few moments before she glanced around and realized that they were drawing unwanted attention. "Here, come with me." She guided Bugpaw to a more secluded corner of the camp, where nosy eyes and ears wouldn't bother them. She sat down with her, pressing into her sister's side and comfortingly draping her tail over her back. "What happened?"
