She'd only been awake for a matter of hours when her mentor stopped by to check on her. In all the chaos of the battle, Squirrelpaw had quickly lost track of Lightflower and hadn't seen the silver tabby struggling for her life against Hemlockshine. But seeing her now, how tired she looked, it was apparent they had both been through hell. The emotional toll of the battle was evident in their weary eyes.
"Are you… okay?" She croaked quietly as Lightflower settled beside her in the cool dark of the medicine den. Perhaps that was the same question her mentor intended to ask her, but she got there first. "I'm sorry…. That I didn't win. I'm sorry… that I haven't… taken training… more seriously." It was a mistake she wouldn't allow herself to make again in the future. She was determined to learn from this experience and become a better warrior.
But an uncomfortable question rested on the tip of her tongue, one she'd been rolling around in her mind since she'd woke on the frozen earth of the camp clearing. She didn't want to ask it, but felt she needed to. "Lightflower…. Would you be mad… if I asked my mom…. To teach me… to fight better?"
She was not trying to say her mentor wasn't a capable warrior; she really loved Lightflower. She respected her mentor's skills and experience. But she felt woefully unprepared for the harsh realities of their world, and knew that she would require extra help if she was ever going to become someone her clan could be proud of. Especially now that they were at war. Her emerald gaze wavered hesitantly, hoping the question wouldn't hurt her feelings.
