wc rebels THE POWER IS ON, THE GUILLOTINE HUMS [rebel patrol]

The patrol is small, as she’d expected from the ragtag group of cats who’d taken shelter in the barn. In WindClan, tunnelers were already few in number, but now they are even fewer. And the lack of tunnels beneath their paws only makes Scorchstreak feel more useless as she strides across unfamiliar territory with her fellow exiles in tow. She’s grateful for Sunstride, for giving her such a task, but at the same time she wonders whether they will actually find anything worthwhile out here. At least her patrol is made up of cats she likes—her black and white sibling is a comforting presence, while Mouseflight had proven himself trustworthy whilst they traveled together through the mountains. Pinkpaw is another situation entirely, but she aims to remain positive with the the apprentice.

She assumes that her apprentice must enjoy this time spent without tunnels to traverse; Pinkpaw seems to cling still to the idea of being a moor runner. Perhaps the break from tunneling will give the younger she-cat some incentive to become a better tunneler in the end, though. She glances back at the other cats, pausing for a moment in her pawsteps. "I think that tunnel we came across before may be our best bet, for now," she muses with a flick of her tail. It had been an awkwardly built tunnel, with less of a sloped entrance and requiring a jarring turn to enter, but it was a tunnel. It could lead somewhere useful; Scorchstreak may have been born in this area, but she doesn’t remember it well. Her time spent traveling, and the following time spent in WindClan, have dulled her memories. "Or we could check on the other side of this slope."

Mouseflight had felt lost since his time in the mountains, even more-so since their little ragtag group of "WindClanners" - could they still call themselves that? - had been effectively exiled from the home many of them had been born and grew up in. A small part of him wanted to go back, to beg for Sootstar's forgiveness just to have some normalcy in his life but the bigger part of him, the part that knew better, was glad that she was no longer his leader, glad that instead they were following Sunstride even if this wasn't a proper clan anymore. It felt more like the mountains, borderless and just relying on each other how a clan should properly be. The thoughts swirled in his head as the small group of tunnelers walked together, the thoughts causing him to inwardly scoff to himself. There was once a time he would have still been in WindClan, fighting for Sootstar and her crooked ways as she showed herself more and more to be the crazy moor-queen that the other clans had claimed herself to be. He still wondered now if he hadn't gone to the mountains to learn what he now truly believed a clan should be like if he would have defended Sootstar as he had Sunstride.

Thoughts broke as words reached his ears and the small calico looked to Scorchstreak, ear flicking once in thought as she asked about where they should check, where they should go. "Whichever is closer, I feel too exposed up here." But he also hadn't really been in the tunnels since he'd gotten back either, feeling too cramped down there just waiting for those dirt-packed walls to collapse and crush him.

Pinkpaw doesn't really get what they're here for, but she follows behind her mentor dutifully, still. This was serious... probably. And she remembers that she, um, promised someone something, so she ought to be super serious, too! And that means she should be quiet. The quietest cat ever. Like a spy on a mission or a monster creeping across the moor... No, the bad guys were the monsters, they were the super cool monster hunters. Her ears and tail stand high to attention. She lets herself admire the moor, too. The weird twoleg place was kind of cozy, but she missed sleeping under the sky...

I think that tunnel we came across before may be our best bet, for now, says Scorchstreak. Pinkpaw blinks. What were they even talking about? Or we could check on the other side of this slope Pinkpaw didn't know if she was ready to go back in the musty, dirty, horrible tunnels again... Whatever is closer, um, Mouse-something says. Pinkpaw gives a small "hmph," pouting her lips. Maybe she'd be okay with the tunnels if it'd let her get a good smack on the evil cats... " Are we gonna sneak - attack them? " she asks, maybe a little bit too loudly, but she was super duper serious!

There was no longer an uneven injured limp to Rattleheart's steps, though he was still far from fully healed when it came to the significant wound running down his side. It had simply finally begun to scar over, the pain lessening with each day that their scattered group spent resting within the barn. Though he still didn't want to risk tearing the dressing from his side or reopening the wound itself, he had been one of the first to volunteer the moment he had heard Scorchstreak was leading a patrol. He was one of the few tunnelers that they still had left in their "new" Windclan, and he wasn't about to let his sister potentially get hurt venturing back near their old territory. Mouseflight and Pinkpaw coming along just solidified that decision for him, even if he did trust Mouseflight to be able to handle himself. Pinkpaw too - granted, to a lesser extent - ever since she had started taking things more seriously, but she was still just a child.

A child far too young for all of this, he was beginning to think.

His gaze flicked up from his paws when both Scorchstreak and Mouseflight spoke, commenting on the tunnels in a way that made him chuckle softly despite the potential severity of the situation. "I've got to agree with Mouseflight... it feels like I've spent way too long out of the tunnels. Not that the barn has been that bad." Just... open. Somehow it felt even more open than Windclan's true camp, even though they had literally been underneath the open sky then. Though he had to assume part of that was just the unfamiliarity of it. Pinkpaw's comment made him laugh again, glancing over at his sister's apprentice with a smile. "Well... ideally we won't run into any of them right now. But knowing what tunnels we can utilize may make it easier for us to retake our home. Including with some sneak-attacking." Hopefully knowing how useful the tunnels could truly be would give Pinkpaw a bit more enthusiasm for the path that she had been chosen for.

It's meant to be a normal patrol. Rumblerain is all but promised this as they set out, though none of their patrol-mates say so in as many words. Hollowcreek might keep Nightmareface's paws a bit steadier, and Peonypaw looks content to just be along for the trip out towards Horseplace. Of course, however, why would it be a normal patrol?

The young moor-runner stiffens as the crossbreeze brings with it the smell of traitor instead of prey and horseplace dung. Rumblerain drops into the frosty grass immediately, hoping they've done so before they've been noticed as they catch movement further along the moors and the breeze brings with it a snippet of conversation.

It takes a moment to identify three of the scents: Rattleheart, Mouseflight, and Pinkpaw, or one of the latter's littermates. No, they're pretty sure that's Pinkpaw. The fourth, however, they catch immediately and their heart sinks. Scorchstreak. Why her? Rumblerain doesn't know if they think of the amber-eyed tunneler as anything but their ... their ... it's their mother.

A now-familiar ache takes hold around their ribs and stifles their breath, the short fur around their shoulders bristling. As much as they want otherwise, she'd never be anything but, would she? It would be easier if they could pretend she was dead like Badgermoon. That she was gone, maybe dead and held gently among the stars, wasn't sniffing around WindClan territory and pretending to be a Clan cat when she has no right to. Some kitlike part of Rumblerain wants to run to her, to cross the slope with their tail high in greeting and their whiskers twitching. They'd see their siblings again. They'd see Redpaw, and Wolfsong.

But they can't. She's chosen her path. Sootstar would kill them if they did the same. Would Thriftfeather forgive them? Would Cottonpaw? Would StarClan forgive any of them? Rumblerain doesn't know if they believe in them with their whole heart but, tucked close to their chest, they're sure there has to be a reason they've turned their eyes from WindClan. Rumblerain thinks of tattered butterfly wings cradled gently among the frosted moss of their nest, and they feel sick.

"Hollowcreek," The moor-runner hisses to the patrol leader in a pained whisper, wide eyes pleading the moment he sets his sights on them. He'd be able to smell them now too. Hopefully he could make a decision to chase them off before Nightmareface did it for him with her claws out. They don't know if they'll be able to.

❀༉˖° At times like these, he felt like a grumpy kitten. Peonypaw had decided to bring up the rear of the patrol, tracing the others' pawsteps with his own as he followed after them, and didn't inch any closer to the front. Normally, he'd be over the moon at having something to do - something that resembled important matters -, but nowadays every patrol felt like it was too foreboding to actually enjoy.

He knew meeting RiverClan would just end up with them throwing insults, and as satisfying as it'd be to punish them for it, the current WindClan did not enjoy the safety of numbers. And on the other paw, the worst kind in Peonypaw's opinion, running into those who had fled the camp all those nights ago was all too real. He endlessly thought about what he would say to them. Sneer, hiss, tell them they're stupid- or freeze, throat dried up and limbs unwilling to bend to his will.

Whichever way you put it, it was a recipe for disaster.

And as he tasted the air and got hit by familiar scents, Peonypaw knew it'd come true today.

"Is that..." he began, but there was no need to finish. Rumblerain called for Hollowcreek and Peonypaw turned his eyes on the warrior with expectation. At least he was surrounded by warriors - and he was almost old enough to be considered one, too. It'd be okay.

Just to prove a point (mostly for himself), he stepped next to them. His heart skipped a beat when he recognized Rattleheart, but this was not the time to back down. Peonypaw would not be found cowering behind his Clanmates.

He was quiet, but his eyes were piercing- searching.
°

( ) Call for a 'normal' patrol tended to sway the expectation in any other way. Hollowcreek was none too label a patrol as anything but that- whether claws had to come out or not. He was given a few to join him on this side of the moors. Rumblerain, who he had great pride and expectations to reject their family's ways. Peonypaw, who held courage and pride to do what was right beside their Supreme. And Nightmareface, a molly who held a terrifying level of malice for those out of Sootstars approval.

His whiskers twitched as the faint scent of their turncoats had turned into something more recent. A fresh gust alarming the four of them quickly. Of them he could detect Rattleheart, one of the loudest and most outspoken from the beginning. Pinkpaw, the blasphemous scourge carrying on her bloodlines failures. Mouseflight, the pretender that had lost sense of loyalty while away from home. Then... Scorchstreak.

Rumblerain's hiss earned a single ears twitch, and he motioned for them to get closer. The wind is in their favor, and he encouraged them to remain just out of sight until they could get closer.

"It is, Peonypaw. It's the locusts trying to get back in! Don't let them." Hollowcreeks fur remained flat, confident strides carrying him closer as he focused on Scorchstreak. His shout announced their arrival, maybe moments-too-late for some to react but certainly the former Lead.

Hollowcreek lunged for Scorchstreak with claws outstretched to catch her flank and throw her into the ground belly-down. The tunneler, smaller than him felt like fighting through wheat. Easy to knock down. Intent on keeping her down with one paw, he used the other to slash down her shoulder.

"Have HARES made their home in your head? Did you think we wouldn't catch you?" He snarled as he dug his claws further.
( I SEE YOUR COLLARBONE ; AND WANNA LOSE CONTROL )

Nightmareface still hates patrols aboveground. What is the point of being a tunneler when she has to do what all the larger moor runners have to do? She trudges along in frustration, a permanent scowl etched across her face and her head low as she prowls, the open sky making her nervous and jittery. But all nerves are sent running when she hears the low hiss from Rumblerain, bicolored eyes swinging upwards to land on the- the traitors.

Her claws instinctively slide from their sheaths as she slips forward to stand at Hollowcreek's flank, a tendril of saliva dangling precariously from her gums. A hungry sneer stretches across pale lips and she growls low, "With pleasure." As soon as the patrol leader starts moving, she is striding after him, smaller than her moor runner clanmates but bold just the same, tail lashing behind her.

And when Hollowcreek lunges to attack, Nightmareface is behind him, attempting to corner Mouseflight as she rounds on him. A former peer in the tunnels, now nothing but a disgrace. "Here, kitty-kitty," She snarls menacingly, amusement dripping from her voice. Her ears remain flat, though, listening to Hollowcreek and Scorchstreak's interaction.

Mouseflight and Rattleheart seem to be of the same opinion that the nearest tunnel is the best one to explore, and Scorchstreak nods once. "Then we’ll go to the one we found before," she states, though she knows she’s not the final authority in the decision. She lets out a huff of amusement when her apprentice asks if they plan to launch a sneak attack on WindClan, though. She shakes her head stiffly, turning to shoot a glance at the younger she-cat. Rattleheart speaks up to say much of what she plans to, and so she only adds, "I’d like to avoid confrontation for as long as we can. Sunstride only wants us to check the tunnels for now, not attack on our own." She consciously does not add any comment on how pointless such an endeavor would be. They are all tunnelers, built for digging and ducking through small spaces rather than for throwing their weight around on a battlefield.

It is unfortunate, given their status as tunnelers, that they are discovered all too quickly. With her back turned, she has no defense as a larger figure barrels into her, knocking her to the ground on her stomach. Fiery eyes dart to the others in her patrol, attempting to warn them with a yowl. "RUN!" She remains otherwise silent as the tom snarls mockingly at her, even through the feeling of claws slashing at her shoulder. In a sudden, chilling moment, she sees the face of Cicadastar hovering above her own, fangs bared. A snake prepared to strike, with Scorchstreak as the prey. She cannot just lie down and accept her death—she sees the scar upon the other’s chest, a match to her own. He is no lead warrior, just as she is not. Lips drawing back into a snarl of her own, Scorchstreak aims to twist out of the tom’s grip, striking out at his face with unsheathed claws. Whether she succeeds or not, it doesn’t make a difference. She doesn’t need to beat him in a fight—any of these enemies, for that matter. She only needs to hold them off long enough for the rest of the patrol to escape.

Mouseflight understood the need to be above ground with this specific patrol, and though he had conflicting feelings about the tunnels he found himself yearning for them now as cats come towards the patrol. Larger Moor-runners and tunnelers alike, and Mouseflight finds his ears flattening as he hears Scorchstreak's cry to run and he almost did. But what kind of clanmate would he be to leave Scorchstreak here alone to fight? But they had Pinkpaw here, a cat far too young and inexperienced for something like this.

Not like he could leave anyway with Nightmareface swooping in on him. Eyes watched the other as she taunted him, tail-tip flicking in annoyance at the whole thing. It seemed as though every cat loyal to Sootstar were mouthy, spoke too much, and he couldn't help but want to fix that. With an annoyed growl erupting from his throat, Mouseflight's claws reached forward to attempt to claw at Nightmareface's face, an attempt to catch her off guard at the very least before trying to disengage. It didn't matter if he was successful with the hit or not, he'd run for Pinkpaw next, trying to get her to move and run back to where they came.

No. No, no, no.

Rattleheart's mind began to race the moment Hollowcreek's voice came crashing through the air, his gaze snapping over to the moor runner just as he leapt towards Scorchstreak's unsuspecting form. The tunneler knew his sister's call to run was the right move, but he also knew he couldn't take off just yet. Not when she was still in danger, Hollowcreek's snarling form a clear threat to his fellow tunneler's smaller one. Maybe too much of a threat for her alone, but against the two of them? Maybe then things would be a bit more even, at least he hoped so.

A snarl was ripped forth from his muzzle, the dull pain in his side being forgotten the moment adrenaline started rushing through his veins. He threw himself towards Hollowcreek, attempting to land upon the larger feline's back and dig his claws in. If he were successful, he would then try to clamp his jaws down on Hollowcreek's shoulder with as much force as possible. It was a ruthless, desperate attack, meant to catch Hollowcreek off guard and distract him from his unexpected assault on Scorchstreak. If he could just break his concentration, then perhaps their whole patrol would be able to rush off without any more unneeded wounds. Though it was slightly hard for him to keep the words in his mind to himself, whether he caught a mouthful of Hollowcreek's fur or not.

Ready to feel the same pain that Harbingermoon felt?

No. Apparently not. It was, um... that strategy stuff Featherpaw talked about... But they were gonna do some sneak - attacking later at least! This answer has satisfied her, she tells them with a quiet, " Oooh. " At her mentor, she gives a small nod, eyes wide. As long as she could bite later, she guesses a bit of waiting is okay... Pinkpaw thinks she smells something funny, but she's not that good at smelling things yet. Maybe she's just imagining it 'cause she's sorta hungry...

She turns in surprise when she suddenly hears fierce snarling and turns to see a bigger cat with claws dug into Scorchstreak's flank. Not just any cat, but one of Sootstar's cats, a mean and scary one snarling mean words to her mentor. " Scorchstreak! " she shouts, and she doesn't know what to do with her paws at all. Was she brave, or was she reckless? Scorchstreak says to run! But she wants to help! But she wants to be a good apprentice and listen, too. And now there are more mean cats, one of them rounding Mouseflight now with an angry sneering expression. He would claw at the ugly cat before they could do anything— and then he's running toward her, and Pinkpaw's blinking aimlessly, smile traded for wide - eyed shock. She guesses she'd run, even if she didn't want to. She didn't really want to. She didn't really, but—

" W-what about—? " her paws are already moving alongside is, but she looks back at Scorchstreak with a worried face. She was gonna be okay, right? Rattleheart was helping her, so she was gonna be okay. Why couldn't Pinkpaw be the best fighter ever already, so she could hit other cats hard and Scorchstreak and Featherpaw would call her brave and nothing else? " Leave them alone! " she'd yell as she runs, and she tries really really hard not to trip over anything.
