MY WORLDS ON FIRE, HOW 'BOUT YOURS?
THAT'S THE WAY I LIKE IT AND I NEVER GET BORED."

OOC- This takes place on the twolegplace border, where many of the daylight warriors live. Anyone is welcome to join, just know that they are closer to the fences because this takes place at sunset, after the daylight warriors have returned home for the night. They’re just hanging out and relaxing before they head in. Feel free to join in with your warrior, daylight warrior, or a nearby kittypet who knows them!

It was a fairly common practice for the daylight warriors to linger at the fenceline once they’d returned home for the night. It was their own way of ‘team building’ as he saw it, a chance for them to bond and support each other away from the stress of the clan. Not to mention it was just plain old nice to have company when winding down for the night. Right about now their clanmates back in camp would be sharing tongues and waiting for the last of the patrols to come in, readying themselves for a night of sleep.

Johnny would be a liar if he said a part of him didn’t wish to be there also, lounging peacefully beside Silversmoke as they relaxed and spoke about everything and nothing. That part of him would curl up in their nest every night and never think twice about thing if it had it’s way, but Johnny knew that wasn’t possible. He had obligations to uphold and other members of his family that he loved. And tonight was their night.

”I am not looking forward to leaf-bare this year. Cannae believe the weathers turning on us already.” he sighed as he flopped down in the neatly kept grass near once of his neighbors fences.

To be fair, it was still pretty decent out, with summers grip still lingering during much of the day. But towards its end, when the sun finally fell below the horizon, there was the beginning of a coolness in the breeze that he knew would only get worse as the days wore on- until frost and bitter winds brought on cloudy grey days that hid the sky from view for moons on end.

He prayed to the stars they had an easier time of it this year.

It had become a usual sight for Florabreeze to walk alongside Jellypaw and Sfogliatella when joining the rest of the daylight warriors on their way back to Twolegplace. Recently there had been a new development as Kite had been walking to the border with them, she suspected it was more for her than any of the other daylight warriors but she hadn’t spoken of it. She had said her goodbyes to her friend at the border and wandered towards the fenceline, not without glancing at the black tabby one more time. The maine coon stretched her paws against the sturdy wood of the neighbours fence, glancing up at the slowly dimming sun that signalled the fact that most of their full time clanmates would be preparing to return to their nests.

“That makes one of us, I’m excited to not be so hot all the time” her meow is feather light, abandoning that make-shift scratching post of a fence in favour of lounging on the grass alongside the bob-tailed daylighter. There was a residual heat left from when it faced the full brunt of the sun, it was almost a blanket draped underneath her. Soon there would be no warm grass, that was a downside as the weather grew colder. “What’s the clan like during leaf-bare?” She hadn’t had the pleasure- or maybe displeasure? Of experiencing it in arguably the worst time for the clans, as far as she was aware it wouldn’t be any different. Maybe a little colder? Hm.

“Hopefully our Twoleg nests will be warm when we go back on those nights” she muses out loud with a content sigh, their nests always seemed to be controlled perfectly to compliment the climate. At least hers was, maybe some daylight warriors were less fortunate? She didn’t feel the need to particularly stress over that fact, instead she looked skywards, focusing on the twinkling stars slowly coming to view. Light pollution made it a little difficult to see them in all the glory that she imagines the clan cats get to experience but it’s still pretty enough.

*✿❀○❀✿* She didn't often hang around the other daylight cats; after a long day of training, she wanted nothing more than to curl up into her soft nest and try and sleep off the ache in her muscles. Today was one of the few days she joins her clanmates along the fence line, tired eyes watching the cats chatter and Bella smile. Bella was glad to be among her clan mates once more after being away for so long. She curled her mismatch tail around herself and let her eyes drift close.

Bella chuckled at Johnnyflame's blatant dislike for leaf-bare, her soft green eyes and peaked open at Florabreeze's question. She gives a curious chirp; by the time she had joined, the cold had long been gone, and with new leaf everything was thriving. "How does everyone say warm without a two-leg nest?" Her short fur would be of little help in keeping the cold from sinking into her bones. An uncontrollable shudder goes down her spine. "Leaf bare can take all the time it needs getting here, hopefully it decides not to come at all."

✦

It was becoming increasingly harder for Kite to say goodbye to Florabreeze each day when the sun began to lower, thus why the tabby began to accompany the daylight warriors to the border. They attempt to remain as a silent presence, eyes tilted upwards to watch Florabreeze as they spoke with their companions. It was nice, to see how Florabreeze interacts with the clan outside of the moments in time that Florabreeze steals from the Maine Coon.

"Safe travels," Kite murmurs, nodding a farewell to each warrior they accompanied to the border. They would not be stepping even a whisker length over the scent marker, much to their disappointment. It could be one of their greatest wishes to be able to murmur their goodbyes to Florabreeze in private, right at the entrance to Florabreeze's Twoleg den; but this would have to do. To Florabreeze, Kite presses their head beneath their chin and chuckles, "May your couch be extra comfortable tonight..."

Since this ritual began, it was always hard to see her friend step across the border, in sync with those that had a paw in separate lives. It took all the effort, and grace, to turn on their heel and begin their trek back to camp with Pollenstrike at their side, as it would surely be a bad sight for Kite to be wandering the territory alone.

Teeveepw isn't sure when, exactly, it'd started, but each day they find themselves more and more reluctant to return home with the sun. It is not that they don't love their home, their twolegs, their comforts - but the world is far more vast then they'd once thought. The stories their mother had told had not done SKyclan justice - and they hunger for more.

And so, they don't return home immediately - lingering upon the fenceline, content with the company of the older warriors. A perfect excuse not to leave just yet, even as they add nothing to the conversation - one ear trained upon the chatter eyes as mismatched eyes focus solely upon the skyline. Even now, they can see the beginnings of stars creeping into the skyline, as though STarclan has finally woken up to go about their days.

Leaf-fall cools the air, and already the others are worrying about what it still too come. 'Is leaf-bare really that cold?' they wonder - they have not yet lived through such a season yet. It will be their first, soon enough.

*+:。.。 Glitch is the only one among the daylighters with a bounce in her step. Despite her muscles screaming in protest after all the walking, wrestling, and moss collecting that comes with clan life, she finds her energy rejuvenated instantly with the promise of returning home. Home with a protective barrier between her and the glaring, domineering sky, carefully bleached of odd smells and comfortably mute of every horrifying cry and rustle that the forest refuses to cease in production.
It's a bit of a struggle for Glitch, still kitten-weak despite her age and a pound or two heavier than the average forest cat, to climb to the top of the fence. She kicks and struggles, but remains determined - home is just across this peak! With a final hnnng! She makes it, pulling herself up and over, panting heavily as she balances precariously on the top.

Here she sits between two wholly different worlds. Not for the first time, as her fellow Daylight cats talk amicably about the weather, Glitch's eyes wander back to the forest. A tingling along her spine makes her patchwork pelt rise as she watches the shadows writhe and claw amongst the trees and bushes. Not for the first time, she wonders how she could've ever allowed herself to enter that frightening place. She wonders when it'll ever stop being scary...if that's even possible. For those around her, it's truly their second home, but for Glitch...she isn't sure.

Still, as always, she lingers. Glancing back at TeeVee who seems to be more than happy keeping out in the open, cold and vulnerable...augh! Glitch can't bring herself to leave her sibling behind, so lingering she shall as well. Torture! Adjusting her balance on the fence, Glitch glances back at the older cats. She eyes their scars, their complaints about the changing weather, their sore muscles, and pelts that reek of moldy leaf litter and sweaty wild cats and...

"Why go back?" Her voice is small and fragile, but blurted out within the lull of the conversation it sounds downright screechy. Glitch immediately crouches low, pressing against TeeVee as anxiety takes its firm, familiar hold upon her pattering heart. "Ah sorry - sorry - I was just wondering - if it's cold, and our nests aren't why...why would you leave?" she wonders the same with herself although the answer is fairly obvious by the grip she still holds on the fence. Where her family goes, Glitch goes. But what motivated the rest of her kitty-pets?

MY WORLDS ON FIRE, HOW 'BOUT YOURS?
THAT'S THE WAY I LIKE IT AND I NEVER GET BORED."

”Aye, I’m sure all you long-furred cats will be looking forward to it.” he mused sympathetically, remembering well the clanmate they’d lost to heatstroke that year. ”If Silversmoke thinks he’s getting away with not sharing that fur of his, he’s got another thing coming! chuckled the tom. Last leafbare Johnnys attempt at getting close had been firmly rejected, but these days his now mate seemed far keener of letting him near. ”Might be the first time I don’t freeze what’s left of my tail off.”

Flora’s question brought a thoughtful hum from the ex-lead as he considered how to answer without scaring her off for the entire season. ”To be honest, Leafbare can be rough. It’ll definitely test your resolve as a Skyclanner” he admitted, not wanting to sugar coat it less they find themselves unprepared. ”It’s bitter cold, and the prey sometimes stops running for days at a time. Cats can get sick too- sick bad. The only real good thing that comes from it is that most of the tension between the groups drops off since nobody wants to waste energy or herbs on fights. But even a ceasefire was not always guaranteed during the rough months of winter.

”How does everyone stay warm without a two-leg nest?”

And excellent questions. ”Well, you don’t. Not always at least. Sometimes when you're out there and the wind and snow is bad, you're gonna feel the cold from your nose to your tail. Your ears get so cold they burn, and the wind makes your eyes tear up and blue. But then you head back to camp and there’s dry nests and warm bodies to curl up with- and just like that you're as cozy as a bug in a rug.” he explained with a smile. It wasn’t the most pleasant thing, but it was survivable for the few months the cats had to tolerate it. ”I know it doesn’t sound nice- and it’s not- but at least we get to come back to a warm nest and a bowl full of food every night. Can’t say the same for our clanmates.” he added, smile fading into something more bittersweet. ”Part of me wishes we could just bring the clan back with us- but Starclan knows they’d never go for it.”

A shame, really. He would have loved to share the benefits of his home with them in the same way that they shared theirs with them.

Ears twitched in surprise by Glitchpaws sudden outburst of a question, but their sheepish correction didn’t go unnoticed.

Another excellent question, from the point of a logical kittypet.

”Because those are our clanmates out there.” came his simple answer, easily found and not unkind as they were spoken to the apprentice. ”What kind of cats would we be if we just abandoned them out there because it got rough? Coward, that’s what. And Johnny could be called a lot of things but that was not one of them. ”Besides, for clan cats, every piece of prey counts in a time like Leafbare. The mouse you catch could be the very thing that determines whether a clanmates lives, or dies from starvation during the night while your at home in your warm nest eating your full bowl of kibble. And in my book that’s well worth a little discomfort in the cold.”
