private There's just too much that time cannot erase || Frecklefam

It's no secret that Rabbitnose has been struggling. Skipped meals, avoiding company, failed hunts, even sleep has become difficult. His dreams are nightmares, the moment of Sunfreckle's death haunting him every time he tries to rest. The clan is moving on, leaving him behind. Of course, there are other deaths stabbing into their hearts as well. Batwing and Flycatcher are gone, one to wolves and one to rogues. Both of them leave behind grief stricken friends and family and kits that will never know them. Anger and frustration grips him more often now. He wants everything to just stop. Everything needs to just....

Stop moving. He can't keep up.

No matter how he tries to keep pushing forward, he just cant.

He can't imagine how his kits must feel, which lead him to tonight. Over the course of the day, he found each of them and told them to meet him that night after everyone has gone to bed. Rabbitnose may not be able to comfort himself, but he can't let his kits suffer in this same agony. They deserve better, and maybe...They can help each other.

When the sun finally sets and the clan heads to bed, he waits in a far corner of camp. He won't begrudge them if they preferred to just go to bed, but he hopes... He hopes they all come. He wants to hold them close, tell them how much he loves them. Tell them he's sorry he's such a mess right now. He wants to fall asleep with all of his kits, right here under the clear night sky. Maybe Sunfreckle will join them, even if they can't see him. The thought jabs painfully into his heart and he fights to keep his eyes from watering. They're sore enough from it.

she knows. there isnt much to do about it, but she knows ; batwing and flycatcher's deaths spurred her, if only to continue her duties in wake of such staggering loss. they were down countless sets of paws but their influx of kits still need to be fed, orphaned or not. thick, tired limbs bring her lumbering back in through the bristle of their gorse tunnel after a meek patrol and instinctively, freckleflame finds herself looking out for a familiar pelt of vicious white, breathing idly the warm scent of fresh - run blood trickling down the plush pelt of a squirrel trapped tight between her teeth. rabbitnose's time was spent most often alone, wasting away in the mess of his nest. sunfreckle's nest, scent long faded and lost to the damp green sludge of rotten moss, so bedridden the alabaster of his fur seemed to deepen green with its wear. its a familiar feeling, the hopelessness ; a ghost of sunfreckle sits crouched, miserable in the nursery of her mind, matted and grieving. their family had always worn their hearts in the stripes of their coat, despite how desperately she wished she were different.. but there was no mistaking her as her fathers daughter.

his light fur casts a sullen halo around his sunken body when she finally spots him, waiting just outside the warriors den and looking just as haggard as he did when she'd left to hunt. the sun still dies beyond the newleaf green horizon and yet his eyes brim with darkness ; an exhaustion beyond the body, beyond the soul. a want to sleep, safe and curled near the family he had left. she'd be lying to say she hadn't longed for something similar ; for the feeling of familiar fur and scents, to be tangled with her siblings once again. when was the last time they'd napped, tangled together like kits? when was the last time rabbitnose had groomed them, had taken them hunting for mushrooms and bugs? back in early apprenticeship, if she'd hazard a guess. there were more of them, then.. as she approaches, the dimming light of a purple - blue dusk setting behind her bleary head, freckleflame imagines a time in which coats of blue and gold would be entangled with them. rainbowpaw, emberpaw, mossypaw.. so many fates unknown. until only recently, she'd imagined her father's kidnapping to be the worst that could happen ; to not know, to only hope he met a better end. anything was better than what they'd gotten. what they'd seen.

so she understands the difficulty, still, even as she places the squirrel tenderly at his feet upon approach. the blood, the tear of fur between teeth.. but his weight loss was noticeable beneath a wispy blond pelt, and her concern roused higher by the day. she lifts, nudges the side of his neck with her muzzle encouragingly, ” supper. share with me, “ she doesn't ask if he's eaten already, instead opting to settle in at his side and lick her chops with a rough salmon - pink tongue. just a couple bites would be fine, ” 's my last hunt alone, you know. im takin' bravepaw out tomorrow.. “ and it hurts, still, because bravepaw had been sunfreckle's apprentice and everything still, still seems to twine her back to him. her placating smile falters slightly, hanging in an awkward half - droop where she doesn't know whether to stop altogether or pretend anyway. after a moment, she clears her throat instead, ” so i gotta be all bright eyed 'n bushy tailed in the morning. sure hope mousenose doesn't snore like she used to.. had to pack my ears with moss t' sleep anywhere near her, back in our 'paw days. “ a half-sighed lie, but a lie to fill the silence -- she was good for that, if nothing else.

she / her, eldest daughter of rabbitnose and the late sunfreckle. big, fluffy cream - ribboned tortoiseshell with seaglass eyes. larger than life! each and every part of her is broad ; wide in everything from her face to shoulders to her feathered tail, something reminiscent of her father’s kittypet heritage in the square of her chin and hulk of her figure. she appears illusionarily fluff - ridden at first, thickly pelted in shades of fire and soot, long & tangled, knotted with undergrowth — seeming soft and pudgy, and she is.. that figure curving into hard, hidden bulk along heavyset flanks and well - muscled limbs. a characteristic lack of personal space leads her to a slouching, touchy posture, often inclined to lean or bump against her peers.

Like Rabbitnose—like Freckleflame—Mousenose has not been herself since the gruesome death of Sunfreckle. The wiry tortoiseshell has spent the last half-moon in a daze. Eyes that normally shine with brilliance are dim and distant. A mouth that previously quirked into wily smiles has parted only to snap and snip at Clanmates, at her apprentice, her kin. Mousenose is enveloped in grief like a morning fog that the sun cannot penetrate. She walks with heavy paws to where Rabbitnose and Sunfreckle sit, starlight silvering their silhouettes.

She sits, facing her sister and father, her expression dull and tired. Her oft-unkempt pelt is similarly tussled and mussed, dirty. Freckleflame tries—damn her, she tries, offering a piece of newleaf-fattened prey to a thin, gaunt-looking Rabbitnose. Mousenose watches, her mouth tightening into a grim line. She hasn’t even noticed how awful their father looks, how tired Freckleflame’s amber gaze seems. She hasn’t spoken more than a few half-spat sentences since Sunfreckle’s death. They’ve been entranced in their own sadness, too occupied to look and see what’s in front of them.

I don’t snore anymore,” she mews. Indignance creeps into her tone. “And even when I did, at least I didn’t kick other cats in my sleep.” She eyes her sister pointedly, and though she can’t put her paw on it—it feels good to banter like she used to be able to…
