Guilt was a feeling Herondawn was not entirely familiar with. He tended to hug the back of groups, and let the shining members of RiverClan handle the important ongoings. He lended a paw here and there if it was needed, but he was mostly uninvolved. By accident, he was uninvolved with the flood. He had taken a morning stroll to the beech copse to see if he could rustle up breakfast, and had come back to destruction.
He was a calm, level-headed cat by nature, but he had panicked when he couldn't immediately find his sister. Herondawn had weaved between cats stumbling and being carried to the beech copse to find the silvery pelt of Swirldance. When he had found her, he had nearly broken down in relieved sobs.
Swirldance was born different, and he tried to acknowledge it as little as possible. She was unsteady on her feet, and no amount of training had made it better. It didn't need to be better. Swirldance was absolutely perfect the way she was. Funny, kind, and irreparably stubborn. He was born different, too, and his oddness was woven into his quiet demeanor. Most toms his age would be boasting their prowess and speaking so.... boldly. He couldn't bring himself to greet anyone new. Well, except for Cicadaflight. He was a very rare exception.
With a small bluegill clutched in his jaws, the foggy tom trotted up to his sister. He had found it hard in the recent days to leave her side, that guilt like a sharp thorn he was unable to reach. He set the fish down and settled to share it with his sister. "Here! I think Iciclefang caught this one, so you know it's going to be good." Evening crept along the horizon, and the rest of camp was settling down for their last meal of the day. "How are you feeling today?"
He should have been there. He should have been the one to haul her from the grip of the river and bring her to safety. He would never let this go.
