He had been assigned to do a task with another apprentice. The blizzard had left a hole in the elders den, and Shallowpaw was suppose to help fix this problem with...his clanmate. He disagreed with that this was a good idea. Shallowpaw did not like to work with others, liking to do things on his own. It was just easier that way. Made things done a lot smoother and better. Also meant he did not need to communicate all too much, especially with his denmates who not even seemed to like him all that much. Better to be on his own than interact with somebody who didn't even want him there. Shallowpaw just wanted to focus on his training so he could become a warrior one day. Why complicate things for?.

" Shallowpaw, your partner is gonna be Moonpaw. You two better make sure to work together!. If you two need help with anything make sure to ask one of us, alright?. Great!, i must run real quick but i will be back and check up on you two later!. Good luck!" The warrior runs off leaving Shallowpaw and Moonpaw behind, alone, just the two of them. He turned his head around to stare at the other apprentice he never even had talked with before, and neither had he heard them even speak before. The thought had crossed his mind this one might be mute and if that was the case how was he suppose to communicate with them?. The blue lynx point blinked his eyes slowly, thinking deeply over how to overcome this...obsticle. He had been ordered to work this out with this one after all but he had no clue how. After some thinking, Shallowpaw was none the wiser and he ended up just staring at them, now with unblinking eyes like he was expecting for something to happen, like an solution to his problem would magically come to him.

She can't deny that she's fine with this request. Moonpaw had felt so wary and uncomfortable outside the camp for some time and swallowing down that unease had been a struggle she was not sure herself capable of overcoming. Every sound, every crunch of snow, made her think they would be attacked by a wandering border patrol or something even when they were often times nowhere near a border itself. It was a silly fear, she was well aware of that-but it was not so silly she could ignore it. Like a particularly pesky flea it bit and bounced around where she could not crack it and the tortie point was left floundering was how to behave. For now she took the tedious camp duties in stride, clung to them like a lifeline. Patching up a den was not that difficult a task but it might be given her assigned partner.
As the warrior left she found her pale blue gaze drawn to Shallowpaw's direction, blinking slowly at the other apprentice with some confusion but a faint smile in greeting. She didn't think she'd ever seen him speak once. Berryheart didn't talk often either but she knew him capable, this blue tom was possibly mute if she had to guess? There was no way she had just conveniently never noticed him talking before. Right? Moonpaw mulled it over quietly in her mind as she examined the materials they'd been given to work on the hole; some mud would help patch the bracken and moss fibers in place but the cold would probably make it hard to dry proper so they might need to weave it all together temporarily to plug it.
If he didn't speak, maybe she shouldn't either so he felt less strange about it. She could pantomime what she wanted to emphasize, probably. Moonpaw had never tried to speak without words before but she was willing to give it a try for Shallowpaw, who had never crossed her as a bothersome or meanspirited cat. He was just kind of there most the time. Honestly, she preferred it to how loud Sunfreckle and Rabbitnose's kits were and Stars forbid Ragwortpaw.
Raising a paw up in a light wave she gestured to the pile of sticks and twigs, bracken and other bits of flaxen fibers, before pointing to the elder's den with a smile and a nod. Hopefully he got that?
Turning to dip her head she grabbed a mouthful of material to carry onward.

He didn't smile back just observing what she was doing. When she lifted that paw up to him to wave it down to the pile of materials they were suppose to use to cover this hole up, he did what he had been asked to do. Shallowpaw made sure to take in all of it. So she wanted them to begin then?. That was easy enough for him to understand and something he prefered doing as well. It looked like he didn't need to find a way to communicate with her. Just showing what he wanted might be good enough for this to work between the two of them. Shallowpaw returned with a nod of his head to confirm he had understood, and when Moonpaw picked something from the pile he did so as well, picking up enough for his mouth to carry.

The apprentice turned towards the hole so he could get closer to observe it better. He then placed the materials back on the ground so he could get to work. Honestly, he had never really worked with a task like this before. How was he supposed to cover this hole?. Should he use the mud first?, or the twigs?. Or maybe the bracken?. Shallowpaw opend his mouth about to say something but then reminded himself. Moonpaw wouldn't be able to give him a answer anyway. So he had to come up with something else. A plan got plotted in his head turning his attention back to his task companion. Shallowpaw watched to see what she was planning to do, and then he could copy her method. That was the best he could come up with in this situation.

( ) Lichenpaw is antsy. Banned from leaving camp alone, and rarely sent out on patrol -- if Lichenpaw was prone to snooping in other cats' business before, he is far worse now. He's constantly searching for something to do, restlessness eating away at him with each passing day. He is not a cat accustomed to idleness, far more used to his vagrant life in the twolegplace, constantly on the hunt for food and shelter.

He's interested in his fellow apprentices in particlar; Moonpaw and Shallowpaw have caught his eye, but he feels like he still doesn't quite know them. That is, of course, unacceptable. Shallowpaw in particular is unusual, as Lichenpaw, like Moonpaw, has never heard him speak before. But now, here is a perfect opportunity to learn more about his fellow apprentices.

Lichenpaw strolls towards the elders' den, trailing after the other two cats. They don't seem to notice him until he speaks, far too loud, breaking the silence that had surrounded them. "Heya! Do you need -- uh, wait hold on. I'm Lichenpaw, just, if you didn't know, we haven't spoken before, but I've been around -- er, you can call me Li, though." He rambles a bit, voice growing more mumbly as he does, before perking right back up as he continues, jerking his head towards the hole in the roof, "Do you need some help? Because I can. Uh, help that is. With the roof. If you want?" He offers a wobbly smile as he concludes, voice pitching up, hoping the other apprentices won't turn him down.

Huh?. Shallowpaw turned his head around to the voice so he could stare at the other apprentice. When had he get in here?. Admittedly Shallowpaw had not been paying attention to anybody else who might have joined them in here beside Moonpaw. He had been too distracted with his task to really bother himself with anything else. Now when he was staring eye to eye with this one though...uh, wasn't this one Sunnyday's new apprentice?. Lichenpaw was his name. "I know." No hesitation there. Shallowpaw actually was quite observant and paid closer attention to his clanmates than anyone might think. At this point he actually knew every single name of his clanmates. A warrior should at least know the names of those who fight alongside them. At least that was what he thought and...Sunnyday would never forget one of his clanmates names, he was sure of it.

For some reason though this one didn't know his name. Shallowpaw just blinked his eyes at this realization not looking all to bothered by it. That was okay. He was not exactly the most memorable face in this clan. " Shallow." he spoke after a moment, saying so little after waiting to even say anything. He honestly just wanted to get back to his task rather than converse with this one right now. They looked like someone who could talk none stop if someone let them and Shallowpaw had no time for that.

Luckily to him that was, Lichenpaw offered to help with the task he had been assigned with alongside Moonpaw, and the idea of having someone he actually could communicate with might not be all too bad. But then again he was not much of a talker to begin with. Moonpaw's silent voice had actually been quite nice. Still, three was better than two and the faster he completed this task the faster he could get out of here and do something more productive like training with Sunfreckle. He much rather did that then spending time with his denmate to be honest. " Sure."

Moonpaw carefully and delicately folded some bracken into a tight weave, a skill she picked up from desperately trying to make herself useful in camp to avoid going out in the aftermath of Morningpaw's death, but now something she took the slightest bit of pride in. Her ears pricked upward to the soft pawsteps approaching and she turned to smile politely to Lichenpaw's approach and subsequent offer to help. The new member of their clan was not the sort of cat her grandmother would've allowed in, but it was Emberstar's kindness who offered the young tom a home and Moonpaw couldn't say he wasn't adapting well enough. If anything she felt as though Lichenpaw was taking to clanlife more than she was, a clan born cat with messy, kittypet blood deep in her veins. It was a bitter thought and she swallowed it down, refused to let it linger long, but as she opened her mouth to answer for both herself and Shallowpaw he spoke up on his own. The tortie point's mouth opened and closed in silent surprise, having not expected him to speak at all given her assumptions he was mute from before-they had spent this entire time in silence and she felt horribly foolish now.
"You-you can talk?" She blurted out, ears burning and fur bristling in embarrassment, "I've never heard you say a word!"
Everytime she was on patrol with him his mentor did most the talking, she'd never passed him in conversation before, he never greeted anyone with much more than a nod or tail flick; had she really just conviently missed every instance of him speaking before? It felt like a failing on her part, a lapse in observation and skill. Moonpaw almost wanted to cry over how irritating it was she made a fool of herself.
"O-of course you can help, Lichenpaw!" This too she shoved down, this feeling of ignorance, she distracted herself with encouraging the other apprentice to join them instead. "We're making sure the den has no holes and patching the ones we find."

( ) Lichenpaw tilts his head when the other tom introduces himself. Huh. He forgot to ask in his rambling introduction, but it's good to have a name to put to this enigmatic face. He'll remember that. "Weird name," he says tonelessly, seemingly without thinking.

He jerks his head back up, nervous grin creeping its way onto his face. "I mean! Not that its, uh, not that it's bad, just. Um. I think all Clan names are weird? And that's, uh, a new one." Wow, he is explaining this poorly. "...I mean, it's Shallowpaw, right? Not just Shallow? That's--that's how it works? Unless you want me to -- unless it's like me being Li, and -- y'know what, nevermind. Nevermind, sorry. I'll uh, stop talking now." Shallow -- Shallowpaw(?) is staring at them with possibly the most unimpressed expression that they have ever seen in their life. Yeah, okay, he's definitely said too much here. Well, Shallowpaw seems open to letting him help at least, so Lichenpaw strides further into the den, only for the other apprentice to speak.

"You-you can talk? I've never heard you say a word!" Lichenpaw blinks. What? He just thought the tom was quiet.

Moonpaw looks... bothered about it. Interesting. He doesn't quite know how to deal with that, though. "I mean, uh, seems -- seems like he can talk, yeah," he says lamely. He turns back to Shallowpaw. "I mean, unless you don't want to? My apologies, I -- I don't want to uh, pressure you? If I am. I know I'm, uh. Well. A lot, sometimes. You don't have to respond, is all, if you don't want to. I can talk plenty for the both of us."

Moonpaw also gives him the go ahead to help, gives him some direction, even. "Great! Perfect, I'll, uh. Do that, then. Yep." He eyes the gathered materials. Oh, he has now idea how to do this. "Didn't -- didnt actually catch your name," He says to Moonpaw, before making to grab something from the pile of materials. "I'm, you know, I'm new here, trying to get to know everyone. Nice to meet you both, by the way." He mumbles around a mouthful of twigs, clearly unsure of what to do with himself.
