through the spillways — hawkcloud

The night breeze feels cool against his fur, and the tom struggles to fight off a yawn. Foxtail has never been a huge fan of guard duty— he would much rather have the night go by in a weird dream where the fish talk, or one where Tigersplash sprouts wings. Depending on who you're assigned with, guard duty can either go two ways; quick or the longest few hours of your life. He felt tired, but he wasn't nervous of falling asleep while on guard duty. Not with his littermate to keep him company during this cool night.

He takes a glance over at Hawkcloud, and he wraps his tail around his paws. "It's a b-beautiful night, isn't it?" Foxtail would mew, his ears twitching at the crickets chirping. While he would rather be asleep in his nest right now, he does love how peaceful the night can be. The croaks from the frogs and toads.... the chirps from the crickets.... it's all soothing to his ears. "How's your training with M-Magpiepaw coming a-along?"

Unlike her littermate, sleep feels a long way from Hawkcloud's grasp. It takes all the she-cat has to maintain some semblance of guard-worthy dignity and refrain from bouncing about on her paws. The evening's leaf-fall breeze is refreshingly chill, and the familiar lilt of insects and frogs weave their voices along the bubbling of the river. But most importantly, Foxtail is beside her. "It is!" his sister chirps in response, full of excitement at the night's possibilities — even though the only thing they're meant to do is sit there and keep watch. The excitable warrior has half a mind to drag her littermate away for a bit of exploration, but she knows well enough not to get them both in trouble for leaving post. Still, the prospect alone has Hawkcloud's paws tingling with excitement.

That is, until the lead warrior's following question. Hawkcloud grows still, her eager expression slowly fading away until she appears strangely contemplative — a highly uncharacteristic look for the she-cat. "It's..." she begins, but her voice trails off, too. Eventually, she settles herself down into a seat beside Foxtail, and when she turns to look at him, her eyes are wide and forlorn. "I don't think they like me very much." Hawkcloud turns away again, trying to give a sheepish smile, but there isn't much humor in it. It all feels strange to the she-cat, and it's been eating at her heart for a few moons — and now that she's confiding in her brother, she nearly feels she might cry. "When Lichenstar named me their mentor, the look on their face was so... angry. I don't know why," Hawkcloud admits.
