His paws drummed against the earth. Oh, how they ached with the vigor of battle yet leftover. He was largely unharmed from the interaction- mostly, he had done what he could to retrieve clanmates on their retreat, to help some cross back over, to swim some of the rest. He was tired, but the fighting wasn't over yet, was it? Lichenstar's writhing body flashed in his mind, and while tears threatened to drag themselves to the surface, he knew he had other things to worry about right now.
No, not just things. Salmonshade. His mentor, who had been there when he needed her, at every step and turn. His breath caught as he slowly, nose lifting to investigate the air. The way the frost was disturbed here.. his mouth parted, Horizonpaw's eyes intent on the path that had been laid before him. Tracking skills, all ones that Salmonshade had taught him from the beginning. A hiccup leaves him as he continues forward, and pushes through frozen underbrush to the bank of a small creek, ears pushing forward.
Painted in colors of a dawn that threatened to break, of the white of misted fog that clouded the land when it was warm during the day and chilly at night- Salmonshade sat not far from him. "... Salmonshade?" Horizonpaw called tenatively, his tail twitching behind him as he slowly stepped closer. The worry in the short-spoken apprentice's words was evident, as evident as that of birdsong on an early morning. Crisp and clear. He was concerned, and it came from a place of.. of known relationship, of trust- not of pity.
