An echo of the past slipped into the recesses of her mind again. That face in twolegplace felt so familiar to her, the placement of markings and the shade of blue. That night she heard the sound of a sole hungry kitten meowing in demand for attention. She felt a little sluggish today as a result, unable to find that solace of sleep between the phantoms of the past. It couldn’t be her, there just wasn’t any way that it was possible and yet she is left to ruminate on the subject. Fangs and teeth gnawed at her cheek as her tail swayed nervously, eyelids felt heavy as she sought out something to do to keep her mind off of things.

Normally she would seek out her sibling or Honeysplash if something troubled her, one was back home in their twolegnest and the other was not on speaking terms with her anymore. She tried to keep her distance, for their sake, she didn’t want to upset her anymore. Unsure of who to speak to about what troubles her anymore she stands in the clearing, taking in a gentle breeze. No, that’s not entirely true. There’s someone she could speak with, another spectre who had started to infiltrate her thoughts. Green eyes seek out a black tabby pelt amongst her clanmates, a smile brought to her maw when she finds it.

“Kite, would you wanna go climb with me?” She wasn’t the best climber by any means but Kite surely seemed to be a natural, maybe at least watching them would take her mind off of this. Old impulses in behaviour come crawling back to her and she doesn’t wait for an answer, with a flick off her tail she whisks off out of camp. Stopping by the entrance to glance back at them before continuing her walk, the type of tree didn’t matter; she just wanted to leave right now, and experience something quieter. She is quick to try and shimmy up the first tree she spots once far enough away. Yet as hard as she tries her claws just can’t seem to find purchase against bark. Brain too distant in thoughts of the past, she tries again, getting a little further only to give up and jump back down once she could feel the pull of gravity.

Finding rest underneath the shade of the tree by the base of it instead, with a frustrated sigh she licks at her paw. Sparing Kite an apologetic glance “I’m sorry, it’s… Not my day I guess” she confesses with a faltering laugh. “I saw someone who looked a lot like my daughter in Twolegplace” the confession extends, falling from her with ease surprisingly. It's strange, the only other cat that she's been this explicit in discussing her daughter with had been Silversmoke, even then it wasn't on the best of terms. Why she feels the confession pulled from her when in Kite’s presence she doesn’t quite understand but she’s happy to be here with them. She isn’t ready to think of it being anything other than a coincidence right now but she finds comfort here regardless.

Kite was mystified on Florabreeze's current relationship, or lack thereof, with Honeysplash. It was confusing to them as just a few sunrises back Florabreeze had been telling them of their mate and now, from what Kite has seen they do not speak any longer. What could the reason be other than that Honeysplash disliked them? Kite could not fully understand but truthfully Kite would not ask. The cat did not like even the brief mention of their siblings and so they would not even consider asking Florabreeze to enlighten them. It simply was not their place to do so.

Florabreeze had something on her mind, Kite knew this before Florabreeze even invites her to go climbing. Kite's friend arrives at camp looking disheveled, heavy with tiredness and continues throughout the day looking more wearisome each time their paths cross. It was a strange thing for Kite to see such a lapse in Florabreeze's oftentimes upbeat demeanor and positive mannerisms. The fact it was so noticeable drove Kite partially mad, she could not imagine having such outward expressions of emotions and seeing such a display creates a knot in their throat which they cannot shake. It saddens Kite to see Florabreeze in such a way.

As the invitation to climb enters Kite's ears they perk forward, thankfully Florabreeze approaches them first or otherwise Kite would be in turmoil with the unknowing of whether it would be okay to ask what is on her mind. Kite hadn't needed to accept the invitation, Florabreeze leaves just as quickly as she came with Kite quickly following. When a glance is directed over Florabreeze's shoulder Kite nearly trips over their paws as a unfamiliar pang hits them... Those stunning green eyes. Kite floats after Florabreeze, pausing a distance before the tree she chose, they crouch preparing to instead launch themselves upwards- yes, to show off- but they do not as Florabreeze scrambles, slides down the trunk and sits in defeat instead.

"That's okay..." Kite murmurs lightly, approaching Florabreeze but abruptly halting, not because of a look casted in their direction but for the words that came next. It made Kite straighten, head cock in curiosity. "Your daughter?" The black tabby pads forward and brushes her head against Florabreeze's chest, eyes looking upwards expectantly. Should Kite ask...? Press further? Kite saw Honeysplash's brood this morning, so it cannot be them... "You daughter... has been missing for a long time?"

Kite presses reassuringly into Florabreeze, brushing by their chest to settle next to their friend. Their paws flex into nettles and their head runs a million miles per heartbeat and Kite struggles to chose the right words, understand what they should do. "I'm sorry... Florabreeze, I am not a... mother... I am unsure how I could ever understand, but my dear friend... know I am here for you." They turn their dull eyes upwards towards Florabreeze and nods rigidly, hoping this was the right course of action to take. Kite wishes in this moment that they could understand the feelings of Florabreeze, of what it meant to have a child... Well, Kite will try their best to comfort and support Florabreeze all the same.

In this moment she is thankful for the weather starting to cool, fearful that she may have fainted well before now. She wasn't good with stress, and now that she's actively speaking with Kite she could feel her body subject itself to waves of hot flashes. There's always doubt when she talks about her, no matter how vague. Doubt that she should be doing this, she should let go. In many ways she's been trying to, yet the memory lingers.

Her tongue darts out, pressing against the upper part of her maw. ‘Your daughter?’ is barely audible in her ears, she greets the question with a nod. She debates dropping the subject, trying to decipher some way out of it. The feeling of Kite's head against her chest, it's momentary yet Florabreeze leans into the touch anyways. Brushing her head against Kite's own in reassurance, it's enough to convince her to continue.

“Yes, ah. Some Twolegs took her from me.” She remembers it clearly, her own Twolegs were there and didn't do anything to stop it. No matter how much she cried out for her, she wasn't blessed with a large litter. It had only been her little girl, and now it was just her. “Her name's Magnolia, she was two moons, stars above she'd be around fifteen moons now” it was hard to not keep track, some days were foggy. Someone's she wonders if the illusion of memory has altered in form, maybe she was older or maybe she was younger.

She keeps her paw next to theirs, in a way this too is grounding. Kite is trying, the daylight warrior understands that. Having spent so much time around them she noticed that there was a disconnect in discussing feelings, a mostly neutral face is what she's greeted with. It doesn't bother her, she enjoys it if anything. She enjoys them. “It's okay, I'm not expecting you to know how to understand” there's that chipper tone, minute in the waves of sorrow yet it peers through the gaps.

Her paw shifts to press ontop of Kite's “thank you for listening” it's spoken in a whisper. A quiet purr of a meow, green eyes glistening with moons of suppressed grief. “I don't think who I saw was her but… It was just confronting? I guess? Made me realise that I'll never know what she looks like grown up." There's hope that she lives, yet maybe it would be easier if she accepted the idea of death. With a choked laugh she removes her paw from her friends, wiping at tears shed. There's a moment before she speaks again, maw split into a dimmed smile. “You were going to climb that tree right? Don't let me stop you!"

Kite listens with quiet curiosity, chin tipped upwards so they can keep their gaze constantly tangling with Florabreeze's as they attempt to read each subtle movement of her face. Around fifteen moons her friend had a most beloved kit taken from her, a part of her history Kite was trusted enough to know. "A most beautiful name," Kite murmurs, their airy voice has an undertone of awe as they imagine a kit nuzzling into the Maine Coon, seeking their mother's warmth, swiftly stolen. Imagining this made Kite's lip curl, an anger began to writhe in their stomach as they thought of the cruelness you must be capable of to steal a kit; there is no doubt in the tabby's mind that Florabreeze would've made a capable mother to Magnolia.

Kite wretches their eyes away from Florabreeze's, not wanting the molly to mistake their resentful expression as being directed towards her. Instead Kite focuses on their paw besides a larger one which they inch closer towards. ...I'm not expecting you to know how to understand. Florabreeze says this in a falsely chipper tone which seems to reverberate in Kite's ears. Their dark face twists as they lament, "But... I would like to. Understand, for you, my friend." Kite keeps her face pointedly downwards, afraid their words are not taken as the truth. The tabby would like to take their pain from such a loss and absorb it, steal it as the Twolegs had Magnolia and take it on for Florabreeze.

Their breath hitches as a solid paw presses onto their own, something they'd truthfully been waiting for. "What if it was her? Magnolia will return some day and you will reunite with her..." After such a suggestion, Kite flexes their paw beneath the pressure of her's and continues to as a peacefully sad silence envelops the two and Kite nearly beckons Florabreeze towards them. To lean against them and somehow Kite will manage to hold her larger friend, comfort her in a way Kite never has to any other before.

Shockingly, Florabreeze lifts her paw away from theirs in an attempt to wipe tears away. Kite lifts their head and with their nose nuzzles away the remaining tears, pulling away only slightly to observe the tears which have not fallen yet and gleam in pools of green. Despite her sadness, Florabreeze still manages to chuckle, dazzle Kite with even a halfhearted smile. "I can climb any other time, I'll be here for you... until you don't need me." A bittersweet smile nearly appears on Kite's face before they blink rapidly, any semblance of this emotion erased from shadowy features. Until I ruin it all, my dearest friend. "Maybe, one day I can teach... Magnolia to climb as well as I can... oh, not that you do not climb well...! And you can teach her to hunt, as you did for me..."

“You would?” She isn’t sure why it’s surprising but the fact that Kite desires that deeper understanding felt like an unforeseen revelation. Maybe that’s what spurs her to keep her paw pressed against their own, their body heat dancing together along a stifled silence. The only thing breaking it at first is her own choked down breaths, threatening to turn tears into sobs. Kite provides mercy through speaking, something else just to fill the air. Something to keep her distracted momentarily.

The suggestion is nice, it’s ideal. Things would be too easy if that were the case, if it had been really her then that means that Magnolia had been within her grasp this whole time. Did she give up? Not search hard enough? Florabreeze holds belief that she hadn’t given up on looking for her daughter but maybe she really did, life being filled with too many other events and responsibilities. Yet foolishly she still clings to that hope, maybe it really was her. “That’s a nice thought, what if… What if she doesn’t want that though?” She mumbles her doubts out loud, leaning against her friend as she did so.
It’s not an impossible future, she’s had to grow without her. Who knows what Magnolia’s thoughts on her mother would be, it could be likely that she is missed in turn but maybe she’s loathed? The feeling of Kite’s nose against her cheek is enough to pull her away from the orbit of an anxiety driven spiral. That’s not her style, she didn’t cry this easily- how embarrassing to be reduced to a blubbering mess in the company of another. “I’ll always need you” at first she believes she was seeing things but no, Kite really did smile. It was nice, even at bittersweet moments like this, she knew her friend rarely shared emotions freely so no matter the situation it always felt important to see this.

“I think you climb better than I do, you saw how I was just before” she flicks her tail to the tree behind them, not moving from where she leaned against them. Careful enough to keep enough of her body weight off of them, aware that they were smaller then she is. “Maybe you can teach me how to climb better?” The offer is gentle, as her paw takes it’s place ontop of the black tabby’s own. A distraction, something that they can both enjoy rather than basking in each others somber company. Not that Kite’s company isn’t wonderful, they look almost serene with how the light breaking through the leaves traces patterns over their pelt.

Kite wishes they could convince Florabreeze that she would be a great mother, that time heals all wounds- even ones that run deeper than the surface; but, they would not tell Florabreeze this in fear she will just believe they're lying for her benefit. But in the short time Kite has known Florabreeze they've felt her warmth, the way in which it lures one in with a true sense of safety. What child would want for less? Kite had been drawn to Florabreeze for this very reason, like a moth to a beacon of light.

"Always..." Kite repeats softly, leaning deeper into the warmth of Florabreeze. It does not matter if she is slightly smothered by her long fur, the black tabby leans closer still and returns their head against Florabreeze's shoulder, sighing in contentment. Florabreeze tells Kite she is a better climber than herself but the compliment falls on deaf ears, Kite is much too occupied in trying to copy this moment permanently in her memory. Truthfully, they're unable to as the image of Florabreeze and Magnolia bounding through the forest crosses her mind which Kite can only wish her friend could see, an image which threatens to form another smile on their stormy features.

The only thing that rouses Kite from their euphoria-induced daydream was the pressure of Florabreeze's paw on their own once more. "Hm..." Kite removes their head from her shoulder and looks back up, blinking rapidly through the strong sunlight. "I'd... love to, Flora! Then you can teach Magnolia when she comes here, hm?" Reluctantly, Kite removes themself from the Maine coon, pulling their paw from beneath the larger one. They dance away and shake out their pelt, dispersing the fur which shed from Florabreeze into the light breeze. Kite teases, "You nearly... gave me all your fur!" Swiftly, Kite bounds forward and with a powerful push Kite launches themself onto the tree and hurtles themself upwards onto the lowest branch. Kite lightly calls down, "Show me... what you're made of! I'll critique after."
