Algaepaw watched his reflection upon the silvery waters. The river kneaded at his mirror self with tender fingers, like the peaks of argentine were to comb and fuss at his tousled pelt, though a mere echo of the apprentice she had just molted into. She had grown much more than before, so much so that she almost did not recognize herself, as the peach fuzz fell away from the cushions of his rounded countenance. Wiry chest sprang upwards in throes of snow-covered stalks, ungroomed and unrepetant as it was. Still, with almost birdlike motion, the young apprentice stared at the giver of mercy and the arbitrator of punishment alike. Y'know... The closer I get, the better it becomes. Aureate eyes glimmered, as if twin halos that brandished upon the murk, though mere specters of the life and light they reflected. He was so close to getting it, close to touching a speckled nose to the illusion, and closer to finding out what it wanted from him. Secrets of the world seemed to cusp upon this very moment, for fate led him gently to his match. Algaepaw hardly realized that velvet paws tipped too far to the edge for comfort, as though tailing the ghost he saw within the mire, chasing the only thing of nature that would dare match her fiery gaze. Feathery tail whisked behind him in a display of unbridled curiosity, though perhaps he would bargain for too much today, and the rapids only bided its time until it could devour him alive.
