He stared with tired hues, tail curled around massive paws to let out a chuff, amusement curling like smoke against his lips at the familiar sight. He’d been fortunate enough to see ‘em in SkyClan, just before the sky turned pink, remembering older times. He shifted, easing himself against the rough bark with a strained grunt, shoulder buzzing, but not nearly as painful as before.

“Look.” He rumbled to anyone without earshot, having plucked himself away from the settling cats to find a suitable spot to rest for the night when he caught sight of the illuminated bugs dancing about. The older warrior offered little else unless someone inquired more about the lightning bugs he’d grown up with as a kid.

A sense of déjà vu filled rotten limbs, not out of memory, but a wish to see his own chase ‘em with excited squeals. He breathed, sinking further against the rough bark, knowin’ that was a wish far out of his grasp. His smile was subtle, wonderin’ if Pearlpaw and Lostmoon would enjoy the sight when he returned.

Afloat, the stars had wound down to earth. Fernpaw hadn't been paying much attention to where he was walking when he had meandered over to them, lone eye following one particular one. Chartreuse, it stood out a little bit more than the others and shone with such an uncommon colour among its peers that Fernpaw couldn't help but stare. Like low fog they hung- he couldn't remember the last time he'd seen them, especially this many of them. Awe written in verdant eyes, even the sightless squint of his left.

"There's so many," he said, an obvious but genuine observation. His voice held a small song to it, the melody of being impressed but hushed. It'd be no fun for anyone if he spoke too loud and accidentally repelled them, dispersing them back to the stars from whence they came. It was Duskpool he stood beside, he realised at last. Charming even on a mild face, he gave the older tom a smile. "Do you see 'em much in SkyClan?"

"In greenleaf, mostly." Orangeblossom answers for Duskpool promptly, though a glance passed sideways towards the two toms forces her to turn her head the other way. That question hadn't been for her. Pressing her teeth shut against continuing her train of thought, the white-and-ginger molly paces a few steps to the side to watch the fireflies from a distance.

To Orangeblossom, fireflies have always been a signal of hope. A symbol of changing times, of an unspoken promise that things were going to look up soon. The last time she'd seen them was ... late greenleaf, she thinks, drawn by the excited murmurs of her Clanmates to a clearing where they freewheeled about and twirled around each other. Once again, they've appeared just when they've needed it most; at the crux of their journey, a few moonrises after they'd lost Little Wolf ... while the sight relieves some of the malaise which has plagued her ever since she'd heard Cherrypaw's shrill scream, Orangeblossom finds herself missing the raven-furred ThunderClanner.

A tired gaze landed on Fernpaw, maw parted to answer when Orangeblossom beat him to it. He rumbled in agreement, offering a flick of his tail in quiet thanks if she looked his way. “Don’t see ‘em much in the colder seasons.” He shifted, muscle straining but otherwise, he settled without making a ruckus. He couldn’t blame ‘em for hiding away until the warmer seasons. He was gettin’ real tired of the cold; frigid and numb, uncooperative and he sure as hell hated askin’ for help.

Duskpool focused his attention back to the illuminating bugs, somethin’ that would have brought hope now felt bitter. He grinned weakly. He still wouldn’t mind showing ‘em, but whenever he saw them, it brought a wave of melancholy over the scarred brute’s shoulders, darkening his spirits. “Makes ya think of the stars.” He rumbled softly.

If Yukio was here, Duskpool knew the kid would have made some speculation about ‘em being the deceased, but he wasn’t here now, was he?

He was sure there were fireflies in the moors, sure that he had seen them before, but Mouseflight couldn't pinpoint a certain time that he had. There was no reason for them to go near the camp - too many moving bodies and not enough plants - and any nights he had been out had mostly been spent inside the tunnels. Now, with no tunnels around him, the warrior found himself in awe of the glowing insects, and he couldn't help but reach a paw out to touch one when it began to fly away.

The second it was touched it fell to the ground and Mouse watched as it soon flew up once more, away into the sky higher than he could reach it. Head nod at Duskpool's mention of the reminder, and he looked towards more of the fireflies that scattered themselves across the territory before them now. "Do you think it's a sign?" He couldn't help but breathe out, eyes glancing around for a moment to look for Magpiepaw before they landed on those around him. Did it mean StarClan were watching them? That they'd be home soon? He could only hope.

There’s a bittersweet song to the familiar dance he is witness to, the flickering swirls above them. Small sparks of comfort float before Greeneyes, a namesake of a friend not on this journey that renders the last memory of him he has - a tearful goodbye shared between the two of them, a plea to stay. Greeneyes shifts to sit beside Duskpool and the rest of the audience, silence held in his tired demeanor.

We’ve got the cure, Fi. We’re almost home, he silently tells the healer-in-training, a one-sided conversation never to be heard by his friend as the pointed tom carries on with his life in the pine forest. Sleeping soundly in his nest, he hopes, with little patients to dote over, to carry the stress of fending off yellowcough symptoms for. If not now, then soon enough.

Mouseflight’s words are soft-spoken, but loud enough to evoke a memory - that of the last time the SkyClanner had seen this performance, an omen read in their sky-bound frolic. Their presence now - so far from home, cast over the journey’s trail - only solidifies Fireflypaw’s words. A small smile tugs at his maw as he nods his head at the WindClanner.

Good things,” Greeneyes speaks with a soft hum, a bent tail curling around his paws, “Good things are to come.

"They're p-pretty," his quiet words startle himself, blue eyes fluttering in surprise. But... it's true - the soft glow is gentle and warm. He's seen lightning bugs before, last leafbare in fact - when times were different, when he was still hardly more than a kit away from his mothers belly. It's strange, knowing how much time has passed and just how much things have changed. Mouseflights words shock him, and he bristles on instinct - the last thing he needs is more omens, more signs. Greeneyes is optimistic - saying 'good things'. But... peri has been hopeful, before. And look what had happened - injuries litter his journey-mates frames, and Little Wolf is gone. No, he is cursed - cursed by the very stars themselves. He keeps his thoughts to himself, choosing to remains silent - but his sorrowful gaze remains all the same as he stares. Such a beautiful reminder of his pain.

In the dim lighting, it wouldn't be all that easy to miss the fireflies, but with Duskpool pointing them out, it's nigh impossible. Even without any urgency in his tone, the sudden break from silence is enough to send Luckypaw's head snapping up, any brewing drowsiness banished as he searches for the next threat, only to be met with - bugs. He can't help the wrinkle of his snout anymore than he can help the softening of his smile just after, watching the lights blink in and out of existence. Once before, he'd seen these insects; they'd stumbled into camp, for some reason or another, and found their way to Wolfsong's den, wreathing themselves into Cygnetstare's fur. Cygnetstare. What was his mentor up to, he wonders? Is she alright? Have they gotten sick, too? Even now, is she waiting with bated breath for him to return, lungwort in tow? The idea of such scrutiny makes him squirm, his chest tightening, though his smile doesn't falter.

There's discussion about the fireflies - when they're most around, and what they might mean. A sign, Mouseflight suggests - good things are coming, Greeneyes adds. Could they really be some sort of sign? As far as he knows, they're just bugs, but StarClan works in strange ways, he supposes; that fishbone Wolfsong had found is proof of that. Such talk is almost enough to distract him from another memory tied to the blinking insects - it hadn't just been Cygnetstare there to observe them, not even just Wolfsong, either. Another hulking figure lurks in the back of his mind, black and white and sturdy and traitorous, his mind supplies, even as he can't help but remember the way Badgermoon had followed after him, watching over him that day. They're like stars, he had agreed, Duskpool points out, and seeing the gentle blinking now, a frown tugs at Luckypaw's maw, smile flickering just like the very insects they had gathered to watch.

Like stars - like Little Wolf, somewhere up there among the real stars. Like Badgermoon might as well be, if he's not already gone up there to meet with the departed. Suddenly, the gentle glow of the insects doesn't seem that inviting - not when there's so many thoughts tied to them that he'd rather not focus on, not right now. Are they a sign after all, he wonders? Whether they are or not, there's no denying that they are pretty, even if their glow strikes home in his torn heart. He'll just have to - he'll have to focus on the good, focus on the positive tied to them. Luckypaw can do that, right? That had been the first time he'd met Cygnetstare proper, hadn't it been? Or, at least the first time he'd actually approached her, too off-put by her...well, off demeanor before. They're certainly still strange, he won't deny that, but the thought of being scared of them now just feels silly, having spent so much time relying on her in the tunnels.

"I've only seen them once - they got into camp, landed right on my mentor. Made her look all, glow-y, y'know," he adds softly, not yet willing to tear his gaze away from the gently flickering lights even to join the conversation. It feels right, to recount the memory aloud - and yet, it also feels strange, speaking of Cygnetstare to these cats, whether by name or only by mention. Like...like the two don't belong together, the WindClanners back home and those before him. It's a strange feeling, and one Luckypaw finds he doesn't particularly like; instead of investigating it, wallowing in it, he instead watches a firefly drift lazily across his field of vision, moving with no sense of urgency, as though it has nowhere to be. Or, maybe that's just the best it can do, ill-equipped for strenuous circumstances. Regardless, it's enjoyable to watch its journey from an outside perspective, huddled near cats that were complete strangers not too long ago. Funny how things work, he thinks, his smile smaller but still clinging on, determined.

The sight of fireflies is enough to make his head lift from where it had originally laid and the way the bugs glowed and danced was enough to bring a little light into his own eyes. He listens to Orangeblossom and Duskpool tell Fernpaw that fireflies didn't appear in the cold often but in warmer seasons, Mouseflight asks if it's an omen or sign from Starclan, and Greeneyes answers that good things are to come. And he wonders if it's true, he wishes for it to be. Hailstorm smiles at what Luckypaw says and tilts his head at the fireflies then turns his eyes to the sky above them wondering if this was a sign from Starclan but Little Wolf as well... That the grim days were behind them and they'd be home soon.

Keep us safe. A silent thought that remains unspoken and he breathes out slowly admiring the glowing bugs that lit up pink kissed skies and he feels warm for a heartbeat, Hailstorm feels like it'll be over soon and they'll be home. Soon.
