Beetlepaw's paws drum against the earth as he runs from camp- adrenaline fills his veins. His father is somewhere behind him, his mother wrangling the situation at came and heading out to.. to wherever Orangepaw was coming back from. He didn't even want to think about that- he was sick at the thought of what was occuring. Riverclan, and Shadowclan, at the same time? The rumors that they were getting friendly? What about Skyclan and Riverclan now, too? The cold snap is barely felt as he streams forward, his ears forward and eyes wide.

Arriving to Sunningrocks with the rest of reinforcements, he's stunned. Beetlepaw comes to a stop, vision switching from fight to fight. So much red. So many.. yowls, of fear, of pain, of anger. Cats, dripping wet, emerge from the water as their own reinforcements arrive. He watches briefly as his clanmates are attacked, as Riverclanners stagger but they continue to emerge like wraiths from the water. Someone bumps him- he isn't sure if it's Riverclan or Thunderclan, foe or friendly, but it spurs him into action.

Claws unsheathe as he flings himself into battle. Burnstorm's words ring in his ear, strict instruction to stay away from the water if Riverclan ever attacked. It is ignored in favor of the burning sensation in his heart, the utter anger in his body. "Riverclan!" He screeches, leaping at the first cat that emerges from the water near him.

Swirldance isn't by any means an expert in the role of a warrior. Her claws have known little in battle, and her mind is built even less so for it. She lurked along the shadowy mist on the surface of the waters with the rest of her Clan, looking around to where she could identify her closest Clanmates. They wait for Lichenstar's call, her heart hammers in her chest, and she leapt from the peaty grounds with aimless aggression.

She's known the taste of blood before when rogues crowded the riverlands, evicting them into the marshes. This is different, though. She has seen the faces of some many times. Shared laughter under the light of a full moon. She knew their names, they had families.

This one, unfortunate apprentice, had a family. Loyalty burned where Swirldance's heart beat collided with each racing pang, smoky fur nearly a flash as Beetlepaw wrestled against her grip. "Who else?" Swirldance's sarcasm is cruelly dry as they struggled for power. "Just get... down!"

Swirldance huffed as she wrenched free from Beetlepaw to shove him down with his back against the water, trying to hold him beneath the surface where she had been hiding just minutes ago.

Swirldance becomes his target, livened anger in his vision. Fox-hearts, to attack a patrol, to stand from the shadows like Shadowclan. He wrestled with her briefly, where he was slowly realizing details about his target- how unsteady her feet were, how.. weak she was compared to his solid, stocky form. Burnstorm's words rung in his ears as he was pushed towards the water, sliding down the bank as mud welled between his toes, green eyes narrowing at Swirldance.

Stay away from the water. They'll drown you.

He flips briefly onto his back as Swirldance shoves him, a kind of training that had been instilled in her since young. He writhes for a brief moment, not knowing how to hold his breath- water floods his mouth and eyes open wide underwater, blurring with silt and muck that he had kicked up from writhing. Focus. Panic is going to kill you. A voice snarls- was it his fathers? He doesn't know. Beetlepaw's claws flash out of the water, grasping at the sides of Swirldance and flipping her over, shoving her head underwater instead.

His gasping for air is cruel, wet. Filled with the taste of river-water, but his claws are scoring deep, his near-warrior strength keeping Swirldance pinned if she tries to struggle. "You stay down, Foxhearted Riverclanner." Beetlepaw snarls. His paws shove again, not unlike what he did with Mottledpaw, aiming to slam Swirldance's head down against the bed of the river.

It is worrying now, Swirldance began to realize, how much effort it is taking to hold this one down. The rogues had been easier to conquer with this tactic, but they had little knowledge on how RiverClan fought. Much of it was unexpected brutality, and the river was particularly an unforgiving beast when the tide was right. Beetlepaw is clearly built to the epitome of a ThunderClanner however. His shoulders sit squarely in a broad span that makes it difficult for Swirldance to balance atop of. His strength is well rounded from most of his body, while her strongest muscles remained within her back legs for some more-than-decent swimming.

Hot air leaves her maw in puffs of mist in the cold air, a visual strife in her efforts. The power in her grip slowly slips further and further away until Beetlepaw is able to squirm free. A pained yowl ripped from the blue-patched warrior, and at once they are a mirror of their former places. Swirldance gasped for a selfish breath before embracing the cold depths again, the salty sting at fresh wounds reeling her from focusing on Beetlepaw.

Of course she fights, she fights with a frenzy that pleads to survive as she can feel the tension build in her lungs. They beg her for another breath while claws flail aimlessly at Beetlepaw. If they catch, it's hardly enough to throw him off. From the murky ripples across her vision she can see his mouth moving, but the dots growing from the corners of her eyes grow and the rush of the waters are louder. Something dark covers the remaining spots of sight she still has, a force pushes her head back-

Caught my first fish today! I think the elders were trying to be nice about it.

Moments flash between the fleeting seconds she has.

Herondawn, the pretty swan, off to see the wooorld~! Excited for your first patrol?

Stars, was this how it felt? Were they coming for her this time?

"'sss... cold?" Her eyes are glossy now, looking through Beetlepaw and straight to the stars. An icy sensation grows from her tail-tip and crawls up her spine. Stealing away her senses until all she can feel is the rivers current keeping her afloat. The stars- they blink and twinkle so brightly for her.

She's going home.

His paws shake, thrash against the Riverclanner to keep her pinned. She has no name, no face beneath the silt and murk churned waters. It isn't until she stops moving, it isn't until he slowly comes to realization that it's over, that he blinks. It isn't until he withdraws his paws with the knowledge of I've done something, haven't I? His paws snag and pull her free from the water, tumbling her and himself onto shore.

The battle rages around them, his sides sting with superficial wounds, but as his vision turns back, he knows what he has done. Beetlepaw's vision stares at a cat with unmoving sides, a cat who no longer fights, a cat who... Beetlepaw makes a noise, a tiny, childish one. His green gaze widened, staring at the body who has slumped onto shore unceremoniously. A body- a corpse that he helped make. No, no, Beetlepaw did this. Did he? Did the water do it? No, yet, his sides are the ones that sting, his paws are the ones that tremble with the knowledge he has killed a cat.

His head snaps up, looking around wildly, as if to tell someone- for someone to call for a medicine cat, but it's too late. He knows it's too late. He has seen death. Watched his Great-Grandmother die, watched Skyclaw draw his last breath. His stomach hurts. Beetlepaw turns, and with the retreat called but moments later, flees for camp, still soaking wet and full of the knowledge he has committed the act of killing.

Riverclan and Thunderclan blood stained the Sunningrocks. They all pointed at fingers for being of a certain blood lineage: half, Thunder, Wind, River, Shadow or Skyclan. However, all of their blood was the same, and they followed the same code and lived by the same sets of values (some with different priorities than others). Her lip trembles as her childhood nest-mate charged into battle and locked into claws, attempting to drown the obsidian Thunderclan apprentice, but she sadly lost against a will of strength. Ever since birth, Swirldance was different but always tried her best to fit in with her peers despite the overprotective cover of her parents and siblings.

Nothing was wrong with being different. If anything, Gladefrost welcomed being different. It was boring if everyone was the same, was it not? The two of them found themselves bonded despite their differences, and she was quite close with the other's family as well. Swirldance was... a special light of Riverclan. Even with her wobbly moments and near-death experience, the blue and cream she-cat wouldn't be stopped. That's what was special about her friend. Swirldance was a blinding star that refused to extinguish, a flickering flame that could light even the darkest shadows with her personality and presence.

However, that light finally faded today at the Sunningrocks. Her paws glide down and slowly trek across the bloodied shores as she comes to her friend's body and offers a gentle smile. "Swirldance," the umber tabby murmurs as she gently touches her nose to the other's. "I'm here to pick you up. You'll be the brightest star above, just as you were the brightest flame in life." With her words finally said, she would guide her friend off to the starry grounds of Starclan where should would join the rest of the twinkling stars above. Without a worry of pain, life or death, Swirldance could enjoy her life hunting the starry waters without conflict or strife.
