MAYBE I'D BE A SAINT IF I WEREN'T ————————————

"Let us be careful here: the gorge has taken its fair share of lives since we settled in this territory…"

Snakeblink winces, glancing back at his patrol partner. Midnightash is young, but she is, nonetheless, a warrior: he should not treat her like a wet-behind-the-ears apprentice that still needs to be told away from the edge of the gorge lest they leap off it.

"And nearly taken many more, including mine" he adds, grimacing wryly. He looks to his paws and straight ahead, back and forth, unsure of his footing: even though it's bright out, he knows himself unlucky, and would rather not take a wrong step and send himself tumbling off the cliff. "Have you ever heard that particular tale? Cindershade used to tell it to anyone who would listen." An exaggeration: the dark molly had always been quite taciturn. "I once rushed off in the night — I cannot see well in the dark — and nearly slipped to my death because I did not see where the ground ended and the emptiness began…" He glances to the gorge yawning open on their right, briefly distracted by the (oddly fond, nonetheless terrifying) memory.

જ➶ The gorge. The woman has been told so many stories about it. Especially as an apprentice. The dangers are known between both River and Wind. So many have fallen to their deaths here but she has no fear of the gorge itself. Perhaps the fall but the gaping maw of sheer earth and raging water does not frighten her. Her gaze lingers on the other territory across the way as Nakeblink talks. Spinning his stories to her that she partially listens to. Though his own story about himself makes her pause in her steps. Turning baleful amber orbs on him she frowns lightly. "Why would you just run off into the dark when you can't even see?" To her it is an honest question as she doesn't see the logic behind such an action. Or perhaps that being young makes terrible decisions easier? Still she turns her eyes away from him then and takes a step closer to the edge.

"Smokestar died falling into the gorge. Everyone was so angry at me because I believed him dead instead of having hope he was alive. I feel like we shouldn't have waited so long for Lichenstar to take her place. No one has survived falling." She remembers their words and how angry those involvef in that family were. But she doesn't regret her words. For her it is easy to move on. Her body slowly crouches near the edge, the soft sound of dirt shifting. Trickling down.

Why would you just run off into the dark when you can't even see?

Snakeblink grimaces at the (very fair) question, glancing away once more. He was an idiot, clumsy in his attempts at apologizing and careless in his pursuit of Cindershade's forgiveness -- but he would rather not share that particular detail with the younger cat. "I overestimated my ability to make my way blind," he demurs instead. "The area around camp is usually no trouble -- I know it well -- but it was during the flood, when we moved to the beech copse, and that was… rather more treacherous."

Smokestar's fall… Yes, Snakeblink had had little faith in his survival too. But hope had kept his mouth tightly shut and his paws roaming their borders, seeking the star-speckled pelt in the dark waters. Longer than necessary or wise, but not nearly as long as he would have liked, in truth. "We have had stranger miracles happen," he tells the younger cat, thinking of Houndstride, Ashpaw, Boneripple -- and more besides. Cats thought dead, rising from the grave. "Still, better learn from it -- step back, please. We would not want to start such a search for you, now, would we?" His voice, anxious, hisses a little through his teeth as his eyes follow a loose pebble, disturbed by Midnightash's paws, tumbling down into the gorge.
