we walk the line . | lesson 1

" Teeveepaw, good morning. " the moon was still peeking through the red of dawn, at the mouth of the fern lined den dug long ago for the apprentices. " I hope you didn’t stay up late, we have a long walk. " his deep gravely voice is low as to not disturb the others, but warriors were taking turns gathering their apprentices for training.

" today, you will familiarize yourself with the territory. " he introduces his first lesson, lashing his tail as he waits for the child to ready themself. " stay close, and before we go…if a rogue should happen upon us. You are to run- directly back to camp. " he warns before turning on heel.

Teeveepaw greets the day bright and early - excitement making it a hassle to still their paws as they wait in bubbling anticipation. Thistleback doesn't make them wait long - head bobbing emphatically as their new mentor speaks, they're on their paws in a heartbeat - a slight, chocolate hued shadow following in the older warriors paw steps in silence. Teeveepaw has never been a talkative child - quiet, content with their wild thoughts and entertained by puzzling out the world around them. Theres always been a certain amount of thrill that comes with learning - especially observing, and skyclan is no different. They've heard so much from their siblings and mother, they can hardly wait to experience it for themselves.

One could call it blessed silence, he’s greeted with. Though fidgety with anticipation his new apprentice is rather muted.

" We will walk to the sandy ravine, Riverclan border, and from there Thunderclan border…. you will see Tall pine as well, the rockpile… and finally, we will return to camp and have dinner. A day well spent, yes? " he moves at a fair pace, as the younger’s legs were smaller and he over time having grown more gentle to the newest generation. Perhaps becoming a grandpa, had made him softer on the youths of Skyclan.

" Don’t be afraid to ask questions, I may look less tolerant than I am, I assure you. " he encourages as he maneuvers a laid over tree, scaling the log with a swift leap. " What excites you the most to learn? "

Their mentor gives voice to places and words they've never heard of - each one carefully collected and committed to memory. 'Sandy Ravine, Riverclan, Thunderclan, Tall Pine, Rockpile'. It sounds like a lot to do - a great distance to travel, and though daunting the chocolate colored child only hardens their resolve. Exploring is adventuring, and adventuring is learning - about clan life, about the outside. If their mother can do this, so can they, right?

" Climbing, " comes quiet admission, slow and soft after a moments thought. It's a passtime they've enjoyed in the past, but never like this - always on couches and chairs and tables and beds; or the strange 'tree' that wasn't really a tree in their twolegs den. All of those instances paled in comparison to this - to the towering boughs and branches so high they pain the apprentices neck, with chirping birds and chittering squirrels so high up they can't even see them.
