The sun had risen well before he had. When he finally dragged himself from his nest in the warrior's den, he'd cast a single glance at the fresh-kill pile, needing some justification to leave camp. Even after his patrol with Quillstrike, those troubling feelings still bubbled straight to the surface everytime he saw the two of them together. He halted at the entrance to camp, gut clenching as her name ran through his mind. Even Spiderpaw had noticed his distraction, his hurt even if he'd not been brave enough to share with her as she'd shared with him. Things had been hard lately but he continued to push forward, finding himself enough to brush through the barrier, taking in the pines around him.
Their needles lay beneath his feet and he took a second just to take in some scents that weren't those of his clanmates. Thistleback had been a friend to him and for that he was grateful, he felt weak but the tom had seemed to know him better than that. He'd promised and he'd kept that promise. It was hard but it kept him going as he plunged deeper into the undergrowth, his sandy tabby pelt streaming across the dirt as he broke into a sprint.
The wind whipped his fur as he continued to pelt across his Clan's territory, the sturdy trunks of Pine blurring past him.
He skidded to a stop abruptly by the lookout he'd taken Spiderpaw to. It overlooked Twolegplace and a two lane thunderpath.
It was then that he settled onto his haunches, his dull gaze peering over the twoleg dens.
