pafp what you know // kitsitting

( ) Periwinklepaw was a bit of an enigma to Sunflowerkit. They knew of him more than they really knew him, having heard about his time looking after Dreamkit from their brother himself, and seen him hanging around Vulturemask. And yet, they didn't quite understand the apprentice. Vulturemask was not close with many cats, and Sunflowerkit was curious towards all of them. But why Periwinklepaw? Why, of all the cats, is he the one the medicine cat trusts to look after the kits? It doesn't make sense. He's barely older than they are.

Periwinklepaw seems very interested in Sunflowerkit and their siblings... What's he planning? Is he jealous? Is he jealous because he's older and now he younger kits are getting more attention? That might be it, they think, squinting at the back of his head suspiciously. Regardess, they don't trust him.

And yet, here they are.

Sunflowerkit lets out the most beleaguered sigh they can manage as they trudge out of the nursery in pursuit of Periwinklepaw. Vulturemask is as busy as he always is, so now they're left with Periwinklepaw. Not the worst cat to be stuck with, of course, but they're definitely not thrilled about it.

Sunflowerkit doesn't seem to like him very much. He doesn't blame them - he doesn't have many friends in windclan, his shyness and softness that had made him likable as a kit no longer tolerated by his denmates. But he wants to try - needs to even - and he certainly wants to grow closer to vulturemask's siblings, even if they're not allowed to know that yet. He has hardly any family left these days - a mother exiled, a brother dead, a mother vanished and assumed just as dead, the closest thing to a father figure held as a captive within their camp. He hasn't seen aspenpaw in days - all he has left is dustpaw and snowshadow and vulturemask, only a pawful of cats in a clan as large as theirs. It hurts.

But the bright smile never leaves his face, his body relaxed for once, the tension long-since drained from his frail figure. He's running on a good nights sleep for once, and it's clear to see in his languid movements that he's calm and cheery today. "S-so, what w-w-woul-d you like t-to d-d-do! We c-c-could play a g-g-g-game if you-d l-like-?" he leaves it open ended, letting sunflowerkit choose. The sunshine is nice and warm, even if the air itself is chilly, and he's simply content to take a break from his trainings to do the things he loves.

Sunflowerkit isn't alone in thinking Periwinkle an enigma. He doesn't understand much of the soft-tongued cat, and even though he's still new to the apprentice den, he's quickly gathered that not many do. WindClan hones them all to great warriors, and Periwinklepaw...refuses it. Somehow, despite everything, he is still so painfully soft. That he doesn't even seem to mind it is what surprises Sparkpaw the most. Should anyone even look at him the way they look at the older apprentice, Sparkpaw would wither to a sun-dried leaf and crumble. Maybe he could admire the way that Peri weathers their dislike, if only the dislike were due to something different. But where the others seem to see his softness and rebuke him entirely for it, Sparkpaw wants to learn. If only so he can avoid the same pitfalls.

"My littermates and I used to love racing around the camp walls," he offers brightly as he pads closer, shaking a few strands of dry moor grass from his pelt. "It was good practice for chasing rabbits! Though–" Sparky pauses, face catching a subtle frown. "I think we apprentices would leave you in the dust." Not once does he check if his presence is even wanted, but he figures they would tell him if they truly didn't want him around.

( ) Everyone always seems to want to play games with them. It's the burden of being a kit, they think, with another sigh far too heavy for one their size. Very few, however, actually play them right. Sunflowerkit is a fierce little warrior, not some helpless kit. Wolfsong gets it, he's one of the only ones. Vulturemask does not often play, which they appreciate; they like to talk with him, a rarity with as little as they like to talk to anyone. Periwinklepaw, though? They don't have high hopes.

At least he is merely offering, though, suggesting it while not insisting. They like that, having the choice. They think about it for a second. What would be fun to do with Periwinklepaw? Before they have a chance to figure out the answer, another apprentice pipes up. They don't know this one, haven't had reason to pay him any mind. "My littermates and I used to love racing around the camp walls", he says, "It was good practice for chasing rabbits!" Hm, that does sound interesting. However --

"I think we apprentices would leave you in the dust."

Sunflowerkit bristles, fur fluffing up. Oh, they do not like this new apprentice. He barely looks older than they are! That is not fair. "Wouldn't," they say flatly, head turned slightly away from Sparkpaw. Periwinklepaw, though, he's older, maybe faster. They side-eye him suspiciously. Does he think the same?

Perking up a bit at sparkpaws presence - the idea of a race immediately catching his attention. A cheery grin on his maw, the flash of pearly white bright and gleaming and well-cleaned by chewing at bones and ice, He leans ever so slightly towards sunflowerkit, ducking down to their height to whisper conspiratorially "I th-think spark-k-paws j-j-just inti-midated, he knows y-you'd win," before standing up again, rocking back and forth on his paws slightly. In a slightly louder but no less soft and cheery voice the weary apprentice would quickly speak to them both "Wh-why d-don't we tr-y it then? S-s-see who woul-d r-really win? Up t-t-to you of course," he adds - he'd rather not make any worse an impression on the kit than he already has of course.

( ) Periwinklepaw's words come as a very welcome surprise to Sunflowerkit. They preen in them, enjoying their conspiratorial nature, as though its a secret that just the two of them are in on. Little as they trust the apprentice, at least he has faith in their abilities. And luckily for him, Sunflowerkit does not quite have a grasp on the concept of flattery yet.

When Periwinklepaw straightens up, the kit turns back towards Sparkpaw. They squint their eyes. Is he intimidated? Maybe... "Wh-why d-don't we tr-y it then? S-s-see who woul-d r-really win? Up t-t-to you of course," Well, that does sound like a good plan... It's no use just saying they wouldn't lose is they can't prove it! And admittedly, it does sound very fun. Sunflowerkit looks back towards their temporary kit-sitter, gives a small but determined nod. They raise their chin in challenge towards Sparkpaw, crouching just a bit as though ready to take off right then and there.
